Perhaps I'm missing the obvious advantages of a WiFi/cellphone hotspot (though I can imagine the security implications!) why not just use Bluetooth tethering which exists today? Pound for pound when working optimally Bluetooth should offer similar performance to WiFi while using *significantly* less power than WiFi. WiFi is very expensive in terms of power, Bluetooth is not.

Exactly. The only disadvantage at the moment is Bluetooth DUN, rather than PAN which by emulating a serial port is limited to about 384kbps (IIRC), rather than about 3Mbps with PAN.

Ah, now that might explain the cr@ppy BT DUN performance... however it doesn't explain the poor OBEX push/pull (ie. file transfer) performance.

The BT DUN limitation is another reason to add official PAN support... what's the point in having the latest Nokia 3G phone if you can't use it to it's full potential with the N800? :)

Highlighted for emphasis. Especially when a certain N800 owner I know (me) is tethering it to the brand-new Nokia N95 "uber-phone" and getting HORRIBLY slow transfer speeds.
Not only do they need to work on BT OBEX transfer speeds but they just need to expand bluetooth support overall.
The N800 right now has THREE different VoIP options - Skype, Gizmo, and plain ol' SIP/STUN - yet has no support for bluetooth headsets. WTF?
It would be nice if I could use my Jawbone BT headset with my N800 for my VoIP calls at home.

Did a test using my Samsung Blackjack. Used the dslreports.com mobile speed test, 1MB file in 3G mode. PIE on the phone 786 kbit/sec, my laptop using a bluetooth dongle 379 kbit/sec, the N800 233 kbit/sec.

expediter - is your laptop tethering using Bluetooth DUN or Bluetooth PAN? I wonder if PAN would show any improvements over DUN... I have to admit the laptop isn't exactly turning in a stellar performance either.
