root access to calendar

I wanted to scp my calendar items from my N9 to my laptop for further processing but it seems that not even root can access the /home/user.calendar directory:

root

/home/user # ls .calendar/

ls: can't open '.calendar/': Permission denied

Isn't root the super-user on this platform? I could solve it by adding user in the calendar group but it looks strange to me that root can not access everything.
