The Nokia IT is NOT a johnny-come-lately!!

Sorry, but I have to vent to some people who would understand. I came across this article from Tom's Hardware, which is a pretty good tech site for computer topics and DIY (some of their columns and commentaries like this one are really bad though)...

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/33284/118/

It makes it sound like the N800 is a deficient latecomer to the class of devices created by the iphone and Intel MIDs!! I ("Not Ignorant") submitted a curt but well deserved "get your facts straight" comment, but it hasn't been posted yet. If it doesn't go up, my respect for TH is severely diminished.

So sad that even the tech press falls for the marketing and pr... the Nokia IT may not get the place it deserves in tech history

I hope you reminded the little girls over there at TH that unlike the iPhone, the N800 does VoIP RIGHT FRICKIN' NOW?

Mine wasn't nice at all. Let's see if it gets posted...

We should have had a "who can be nastiest and still get posted" contest.

Re: The Nokia IT is NOT a johnny-come-lately!!

Well, your post was quite polite as it had to be as a member of the underdog team and wouldn't do so well in that contest. So I made an effort as the IT historian...

Damn, I was polite???

I blame the diplomatic face I had to put on earlier today... :D

EDIT: the editor continues his streak of disingenuity in the annotated comments. Let's see how far he's willing to run with that trait...

I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem, but when I clicked on the posts that you guys wrote (morbidly curious, i guess) I got a 'Not Found' error. In fact, none of the comments on the article show up...

[edit] Oops. This erroneous message was sponsored by Firefox and NoScript, our favorite add-on.

Have the hounds been shot???

EDIT: I have escalated the pitch of battle. How long before I feel the fury of editorial nukes?

You have to with your manners because of your Nokia job and keeping your same username.

Yes, it is all about the tense. It reads like the IT is trying to catch up to the iphone capabilities. And he is the one who made the comparison to the iphone. And what class exactly is the iphone supposed to be an early member of? WiFi plus cellular - that's not true either!!

He's truly struggling to counter our points.

I like it. :D

a HA!

He refused to add my last post (would have been before Milhouse's).

I consider that a concession.

Mine isn't appearing :(

Maybe he's cottoned on to us and knows he's getting an orchestrated pasting. :D

I had some serious points to make (well, I thought they were serious)... the quality of the reporting in that article is flat out poor, and unfortunately we all come across sounding like Nokia fanbois (which we undeniably are) yet the point we're trying to make to the guy is that this article is factually incorrect on a number of fundamental points!

Sooooo annoying.... grrrrrr. :(

Yes, we may have ganged up on him a bit ( but he deserved it). I do give criticism of Nokia when and where criticism is due (even though I buy only Nokia mobiles), and I do not automatically rail about how terrible the iphone is (although I will never buy it). And no matter if poorly executed by Nokia, I think it should be known that the IT was FIRST in its category and was the main impetus for the MID movement that Intel now threatens to claim for itself. Too bad there weren't competing patents, then there would be a reason to pursue the issue.

On a more general note, I have the subtle but distinct feeling that the IT will not receive its proper place in history. Yes, the iPhone is slick, and yes there may be many more Intel MIDs sold by 2010 than Nokia ITs, but it appears to be a foregone conclusion that the place of the IT will be forgotten. This is a lesson as to how people always think that Apple or Sony or some other big marketing machine is the innovator, when they are not.

Re: The Nokia IT is NOT a johnny-come-lately!!

Gee, things the N800 can do the current iPhone CANNOT:

VoIP
Skype
ScummVM, Star Control II, FreeCiv, and Wesnoth (my favs)
Not one but TWO browsers (so far...)
Flash 9 support (you know, for the "real internet")
16 GB of REMOVABLE storage space (32GB coming soon with 16GB SDHC cards coming down the pipe)
dual-booting into alternate operating systems
Actual video chat/calling
Use 3G via tethering to a 3G-enabled phone
Removable, user-replaceable battery
standard mini-USB port for data transfer

Honestly, this guy had a deadline he was late on and he did the bare minimum of research.
Had that ***** done a modicum of research he would have found ITT, the Maemo garage/planet, and been able to write a longer, more detailed article on it.
Don't they teach basic research skills and logic in universities anymore?
I guess he was passed out drunk in his dorm room that day.

My last unpublished post was the coup de grace. I wasn't nasty, but I somehow knew it wasn't getting through his biased filter. Too many nails in his logic coffin. ;)

I haven't been able to even see this article on the N800 on either browser or on my work PC with IE and Firefox.

Obviously he didn't approve it since now there's a "Yay iPhone!" post in there.
I prefer sites where the comments aren't run through meatspace filters who show bias.

And I just had to add the following which you might not ever see over there:

VoIP through any SIP provider with full STUN compatibility
Skype
ScummVM, Star Control II, FreeCiv, and Wesnoth (my favs)

Flash 9 support (you know, for the "real internet")
16 GB of REMOVABLE storage space (32GB coming soon with 16GB SDHC cards coming down the pipe)
dual/triple-booting into alternate operating systems
Actual video chat/calling
Use 3G via tethering to a 3G-enabled phone
Removable, user-replaceable battery
standard mini-USB port for data transfer
Ability to use Bluetooth GPS receivers
Ability to use Bluetooth keyboards
A2DP stereo Bluetooth capability (WTF was Apple thinking leaving THIS one out at launch?)

Also, someone has already created a new soft-keyboard that mimics the iPhone's keyboard only it's a little more usable due to larger touchscreen real estate.
And the N800 default "thumb" keyboard is frickin' huge and quick to type on compared to the iPhone keyboard.

Re: The Nokia IT is NOT a johnny-come-lately!!

Woah, Milhouse goes off. Excellent points there too.
I'm sick of everything on the planet being compared to the iPhone and the "reviewer" finding everything but the iPhone somehow wanting.

Everytime I run across an iTard that wants to "phone battle" I just ask them one simple question that usually shuts them up:
Can your iPhone make free phone calls?

The ONE comment that agrees with the writer is suspicious.
The writer's name is Wolfgang Gruener, an obviously German/Austrian name.
The commenter's name is "Bart" and he starts out with "Hallo" which is EXACTLY how Germans spell the word hello. I think that is a plant, either by the author himself or one of his buddies.
Meh, that's really going out on a limb though...

Yes, if I could I would have posted a giant wallpaper of Monty Burns screaming "Release the hounds!" over there.
Hmmm....I'll have to create a little video using a clip from the Simspons movie...

"Ah, Mr. iPhone. There are two buttons here. One sets you free if you have Flash 9 & VoIP support, the other releases the hounds."

Re: The Nokia IT is NOT a johnny-come-lately!!

Another clueless german.

When i visited germany years ago, I told an electrical / computer engineer friend about this hot new thing called "ADSL" pushing hundreds of kb/s over copper - an american invention - they said 'this is not possible'.

This was 1995. 4 years later germany was still resisting DSL in favor of their ISDN. "Oh dis DSL is not invented heah! Dis american technology can not exist! It must be wrong or bad!" Oh and i shouldn't forget to mention that they wired up ALL of east germany with fiber that can't carry TCP/IP. No really.

Sorry, i'm living in a land of socialists and luddites. Can't even get my tax forms online in pdf form. They still waste billions on outdated office procedures filing all correspondence into three ring binders.

And Wolfgang Gruener is an idiot. I can only hope the next gen germans are less cranially-rectally inverted in the tech department.
