Also is there a way to accept friend requests currently or am i blind?

There is no way of doing that, yet. This has to do with the news stream and that I can't access it via the normal API. Still working on possible workarounds, though, stay tuned.

Re: [Announce] Instago, an Instagram client for MeeGo / Harmattan

Hi all,

here is the next public beta version: 0.6.0 (stable).

Download page (with changelog since last stable version 0.5.1) can be found here.

Direct download link is here.

Here is the changelog from developer version 0.5.2:

* Added image caption in user feed
* Added quick menu for images in user feed (long tap on image)
* Added external Nokia Maps link to location detail page (long tap on map)
* Added detail map view to location detail page (long tap on map)
* Added "tap header to jump to top" behavior on all list pages
* Optimized image detail component in user feed and detail view
* Optimized image caption in detail view
* Optimized touch behavior of reload buttons in top header bar
* Optimized name and location fields to fit, elide or wrap
* Fixed bug where location detail page could be loaded multiple times at once

About this version:

There are lots and lots of ui and code optimizations in this version. So this release is all about usability and joy of use and I think it's quite a good step forward for Instago. The goal of course is not only to replicate features found in the official Instagram client, but to make Instago usable and fun.

As ususal the version is tested on my N9 and runs pretty well. Please report all bugs or quirks you may find here or on the project page.

Some general things:

* All old links to public beta versions from the download page are deprecated. You can still find all old versions by selecting "All downloads" instead of "Current downloads" in the search dropdown. Alternatively you can find all versions (including the developer releases) in the repository

* To keep track of feature request (mine and yours) I they are added to the issue list of the project. If you want to take a look and add some of your own you can do so here.

As usual more information and general stuff is posted on my n9 development blog.

Happy testing!

Fabulous!

One possible nice addition: being able to swipe left/right to browse through a user's photos once one has zoomed in on one. Otherwise, one has to always hit the "back" button and select the next from the overview.

Sorry if that has already been requested/discussed.

I thought about this a bit and finally came to the conclusion that the way the official app handles this is the best approach.

Generally you would want to use this as a way to swipe to the previous / next item in a list after you chose an image from the gallery view. This in itself makes sense and it a valid request.

The way the official app handles this is to offer a toggle between gallery and feed view for all logical cluters of images. So instead of swiping you would just scroll to get to the next. As the gallery view is essentially the detail view anyway it makes no difference and acts as a vertical swipe.

Summary: Good point, I'll add the gallery / feed view toggle :)

What do you all think?

In other news: Thanks for the get-well-wishes. I'm semi better and might find some time to work on the app later this week. Please don't hold your breath for a weekend release, though.

Well, this only works when browsing other people's photos and when clicking on hashtags AFAICT. When searching for hashtags, it would be good if one could easily reach that as well, maybe by presenting the top 5 search results as links above the stream.

It would be nice if the "Popular" stream could also be switched to feed view.

My main gripe is that it would be nice to have a view of a photo, with likes, hashtags and comments below, and being able to swipe to the next in the particular stream. Right now, you still have to click on the comments for each photo and the "back" button again.

In any case, I don't want to sound too negative... The additions in 0.6.1 are great and I think instago is a fantastic and extremely well done app!

Re: [Announce] Instago, an Instagram client for MeeGo / Harmattan

Hi all,

here is the next developer version: 0.6.1 (developer build).

Direct download link is here.

Here is the changelog from developer version 0.6.0:

* Added intro page if users are not logged in
* Added gallery / feed view switch for user images
* Added gallery / feed view switch for hashtag search results
* Added links for hashtags in image caption
* Added links for user names in image caption
* Added links for hashtags in comments
* Added links for user names in comments
* Added WazappPureRegular font by @knobtviker for limited Emoji support

About this version:

I finally added links for hashtags and users (only visible if you are logged in). Also the discussed gallery / feed view switcher is available now, although I preferred a button in the title bar for this instead of the Instagram style buttons in the actual gallery component.

The Emoji support is just a fake. All I do is use a font that contains the special characters for Emojis so nothing is shown instead of squares (or some emoticon). Anyway, it's just a workaround until I have time to implement a working solution (thanks @knobtviker for the font).

As ususal the version is tested on my N9 and runs pretty well. Please report all bugs or quirks you may find here or on the project page.

I'm a bit out of ideas what to do as the next bigger step for Instago. Of course there are still some little things to clean up, but that's not going to keep me for long.

So I guess I could do two things:

* Wait for an Instagram response regarding whitelisting (propably won't happen) and use the time to port Instago to Belle (likely as I still have an N8) or Fremantle (less likely as I don't have an N900).

* Go ahead and implement features using the closed down endpoints the official app uses (possible but may get the app and me banned from Instagram).

Thoughts?

If yes, it's not worth it. I would rather have an Instagram viewer than nothing at all.

Re: [Announce] Instago, an Instagram client for MeeGo / Harmattan

first of all thanks for this awesome app...

but one thing i really don't like is that it loads picture by picture... would prefer it if it loads like maybe 20 at one time, then another 20 when i reached the last one and so on...

atm you always scroll down to the next picture and have to wait until it has been loaded...

i would prefere if you continue to implement features for n9, as i don't use another phone ;P
but whatever you do, don't stop developing instago ;)

EDIT: and why not make instago useable in landscape mode?!
or save searches like cutetube oder musikloud do?

I say go for closed, but do your job well and go "ghost" on the server.
Even if found, keys can easily be replaced and app rebranded.

Hi all and happy holidays!

As some of you already know I made up my mind and am currently investigating a port to BlackBerry 10. You can follow my progress either on Twitter or http://bb10development.tumblr.com/

That does not mean that development on Instago for the N9 is stopped. Quite contrary, both will share as much codebase as possible (bb.cascades is QML as well).

This gives me the opportunity to refactor some stuff I wanted to change for quite some time. One example would be to handle the lists as repeaters. This would also fix the issues with the chinese characters you posted about.

All in all expect more updates next year and development in the usual pace. Thanks for all your support so far and see you next year!

Cheers,
Dirk

You can also use the Symbian components precompiled for BB10... So you can really write code only 1 time... I feel Cascades are no "that" developer friendly compared to nokia components... Maybe I'm wrong and should try smth out :)

Re: [Announce] Instago, an Instagram client for MeeGo / Harmattan

I'm still hard at work getting the BlackBerry version on par with the MeeGo one. This is based on the new architecture and the N9 version already uses the shared assets and resources,

Already working:

* Popular Images
* Image Detail
* User profile
* Login / Authentication

Next up: Image features (like, likes, comments).

I could do that, but I always like to stick to the UI guidelines of the specific platform I'm coding on. So I'd like to have the Harmattan style UI on the N9 and BB10 on the BlackBerry.

Otherwise: True, Cascades takes a while to get used to.

imaginaryenemy 2013-01-16 03:38

So, i guess i hadn't tried sharing an image from Instago for awhile. This is what appears if i share an image in a text message:

Instago Link, <html><style type="text/css">a {color: rgb(46, 94, 134);}</style><p>Sgt. Vader's Lonely Hearts Club Band</p></html>, http://instagr.am/p/UhXtbXwaKY/

The link at the bottom works, but everything else is just random plain text. It happens with all images i try to share.

This must have changed in updates since my last attempt to share an image?

Right. The videos show the BlackBerry 10 standard look. The N9 version will look as it does now with the standard Harmattan look.
