N900 not booting

i know this have been brought up many times, i have searched and spent many hours on the forum and google trying to resolve this. (actually going into more than 24hrs in total)
my n900 is stuck. i have been able to activate rd mode (no initfs \o/ screen)
the device seems not to cold flash
the emmc seems not to flash (no suitable device) but fiasco flashes
at one point it got stuck on the "2nd circle" of the load screen.
trust me i have tried everything but somehow i think i am missing one factor or so.
the phone constantly connects and discoonect when the usb is plugged in
on disconnecting the usb from phone the phone just stays at the nokia logo (white screen) and reboots...
i personally do not think all is lost, i just do not know the next step so some help would be appreciated.
thank you.

Re: N900 not booting

this first script has worked but the 2nd script has failed,
So I have made a bit of progress. The flash keeps dying at cmt-mcusw. From doing a search noticed that the only items left after cmt-mcusw was the kernel and rootfs. So I extracted the pr1.3 image:

flasher-3.5 -u RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin

then manually installed the kernel with

flasher-3.5 -k zImage -f

and then finally rootfs

flasher-3.5 -r rootfs-jffs2 -f -R

that failed

RobertHall 2012-09-16 00:58

Re: N900 not booting

also tried this
flasher-3.5 -c -h RX-51:2101 -F <FIASCO image> -S usb

not getting a result....
help

Quick reply...
Somebody, please, help. I am not an expert on cold flashing (I have done it once, long ago), so, unfortunately, I cannot be of assistance with this problem.

Hi Robert,

Sorry for not getting back to your PMs sooner mate. I have been working throughout the weekend and whilst I have been at my desk, I have not had chance to sit down without distraction :)

Can you tell us what OS and version you have? XP, win7, 32/64gb etc...

Win7 64bit...
i think i need to cold flash but ive tried this from the wiki and it gives an error about 2nd.bin not found

have also tried:
flasher-3.5 -h <device>:<hwrev> -F <fiasco> -c -S usb
"no suitable device found"
and the one time it did begin to flash i got:

Re: N900 not booting

OK it does sound as though you might be affected by the old win7-64bit problem still. I will admit to never seeing this problem myself when I have flashed my phone, I think I know why but can't say here :)

You said in your PM that you ran the USB fix but that still did not help. Can I ask if you have rebooted your PC since running the libs?

Another thing to try would be to try and flash with another USB cable / Port or a completely different PC?

One other popular scenario would be to use an Ubuntu Live CD as this would load the generic USB drivers as it boots in to the OS. The commands are almost the same too, almost.

Hope this helps?

Re: N900 not booting

what has me is the fact that it loads the fiasco. no problems with the usb.
what are the correct commands for cold flashing?

Re: N900 not booting

yeah I am unsure of those bulk read errors. You could delete the images that you have and re-download them again as they may have become corrupt somewhere down the line. (possible interruption when downloading or with too many execution attempts?)

Or mu other advice would be to follow another set of instructions, that sometimes works for me when my head gets in a twist :)

Try following this and use the same images as they advise and copy&past the commands.
http://www.mynokian900.com/2011/03/f...-my-nokia-n900

This will flash with the vanilla image and you will no doubt have the phone prompt you to update once it comes back up.

...or burn a usb, that is faster.

On pc, use navifirm+ to get the firmware (rx-51) it manages the download it self and its very reliable to get flash files for all nokias directly from nokia servers (nokia care server).
I wold give a try on a 32bit OS, be it linux or windows, as sometimes 64bit drivers may not recognize well the handset.

Good luck

The files are the same, so use them same way.
If you do the live linux, transport the files on a separate usb, with flasher binary so you wont have to search around.

I got mine 6 months now. At the beginning i wanted to totally reset it by flashing fiasco and emmc and the emmc flashing always gave me error. As i fix pc's, i had one fresh windows installed machine (32bit if it matters) and it went just smooth flashing all the way without errors, with that fresh installed windows. Don't try virtual machines with a failing flash. There is more than the fiasco and emmc software on the phone (rpl and pm certificates) related to the simlock and imei, and those can get damaged/deleted if some wrong info by the drivers get sent to the handset.

Sorry... forgot to mention.
Navifirm is used on the gsm comunity to get all the flash files for nokias, as you could see as it opens and dumps a list from nokia care. Those are files that the oficial nokia generic flasher, phoenix, uses.
You only need the familiar files.

There is this discussion related to N9 and Phoenix. Instead, you have to create a RX-51 directory on the c:\Program FIles\Nokia\Phoenix\Products folder (yours should be c:\program files (x86)\...).
More about Phoenix its with you cause its a proprietary and not public program, that is available via Gsearch but cracked.

Re: N900 not booting

quick advice: do NOT coldflash, since that is not root of your problems and won't fix anything.
Sorry short on time today, just a recommendations: read http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware THREE times, with 2h chillout break in between. It really has all, though scattered all over the place.

more tomorrow

Re: N900 not booting

@RobertHall,

Do as @joerg_rw says above. I would suggest you reflash again the fiasco image, and post here the exact output of the flashing session.

If you're N900 gets stuck while booting, it is at least booting :), meaning you have the bootloader in place. Forget cold flashing.

Re: N900 not booting

Looks like your files are corrupted?

Could you post the output of "DIR" run on your C:\Program files (x86)\maemo\flasher-3.5?

I happen to have those images here at work (hopefully correctly downloaded, but this is unconfirmed).

COMBINED is 200 174 197 bytes, and
VANILLA is 262 090 105 bytes

The actual size on disk may and will actually differ from the above. That is not a problem.

whatever the issue is with my phone is on the emmc. (which will not flash) I have my device in rd mode (but no info is showing) bright white screen and nokia logo usb icon top right.
the last time info showed up it stated hw revision 2101 and "no initfs \o/
(not showing any info now)
everytime i try to flash the emmc the phone disconnects immediately, and even pulling the cable and restarting does nothing.
but it is clear i need the emmc flashed

So I guess you currently have no kernel in-place. Normal fiasco ("combined") flashing should fix it, but apparently your image is corrupted. Even if it has worked before, I'd suggest you re-download the image and try it again.

Try to fix the above point first. Flashing (correctly) the kernel and the rootfs should give you a bootable system.

It may be that your eMMC is damaged. Even in that case Maemo should be able to boot!

AbsolutoCaos 2012-09-18 10:57

Re: N900 not booting

I would really give other OS(32bit)/machine a chance.

If you did already im sorry for repeating myself, but trying all those amounts of failed flash in same environment aren't taking you anywhere...

If it was me i would:

1st use other os 32bit/machine

2nd Keep up with the battery. Try new battery? even other and shorter USB cable.

Maybe (just a maybe) your N900 board as contaminants in it that may prevent it to function normally, if not really damaged as many happen to be at some point.

3rd open it up (carefully, very easy, service manual and youtube tuts available wildly to do it) and clean it up with isopropyl alcohol or good pcb cleaner. After dry (10 minutes, not so long but...) assemble it back and try with the flash again.

But hey, this is just me ok? If some here (more experienced for sure than me on this handset) tells you not to follow my tips, don't follow my tips please.

What if in the process of reprogramming the eMMC, it deletes the older FS and fails to create a new one, does it still boot (or should)?

1. phone only flashes in rd mode
2. phone flashes emmc but in pc suite mode (it is successful)
3. using xp virtual mode
4. using original fiasco and emmc (not latest)
5. trying to "cold flash" gives "must supply 2nd image" (how do i do that?)
6. at some points the phone does boot up but gets stuck at the "2nd circle"
7. phone still reboots at nokia logo white screen :(

Care to explain that one?

Am I correct in assuming that you know how to flash the N900 and you know that this is done by the boot loader (NOLO), which runs, like, when you turn on the N900?

I cannot possibly imagine what relation this may have with PC Suite mode. This is something that you select (PC Suite or Mass Storage) when you connect via USB with the Maemo desktop up & running, which will never be the case when you flash.

And remember:
1. forget about cold flashing,
2. re-download and re-double-check that you have the latest images of both fiasco and vanilla.

There are reports that downgrading the firmware may lead to a non-functioning GSM firmware.

And please, post the exact output of your flashing session. I want to see when you see anything about PC Suite mode.

as in when i flash the fiasco (holding "u") it flashes when i try the same with emmc it never flashes, it autodisconnects. then reconnects after a few minutes and the connection is no longer update mode but pc suite mode. strange i know.
here are two youtube videos showing what I mean

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_EAD...ature=youtu.be
(when i tap my finger on the screen its to show that there is no usb icon)

now help please!!
