n770 not powering up
Hey All,
I got my n770 last Friday, and it appears to have died. Its been used by me, my sisters and parents around the house till about Wednesday when i took it to work to read my RSS feeds on the train. All that happens now is the nokia logo comes up and it turns back off. Charging does nothing as does removing the battery :/ Any helps great! Kevin |
Re: n770 not powering up
I must be jinxed! I just got a new 770 Friday (eCost), came with 3.2006.49-2 OS2006 installed. Put a few apps on there, (xterm, maemo-mapper, vnc, ...) and working fine. Browsed last night, put it to sleep, then can't boot this am.
Symptoms are EXTREMELY close to an issue I had with a N800 I had when they came out that was an alleged software bug. 770 symptom:- Power up => NOKIA in blue on white screen. No progress bar 33seconds later, screen flash, repeats 'NOKIA' in blue. Looks like this occurs 10 times or so, then screen goes totally blank/white for a while, then shows charge icon. Then goes to black for a moment, then repeats the 'NOKIA'... I'm about to search for all those WSOD/infinite reboot posts. Wish me luck, Clive |
Re: n770 not powering up
You will need to reflash to get around that problem.
|
Re: n770 not powering up
I will try reflash, and presume that will work (it did on the 5+ times I needed to do it with the N800).
But I reflash and reinstall the apps I had, won't it just repeat the same failure? I was hoping 3.2006.49-2 was stable, but apparently not! I'm searching for causes, then hopefully avoid them. regards, Clive |
Re: n770 not powering up
As expected, reflashing restored operation. But I'm left with an uneasy feeling of here-we-go-again, same instability issues as the N800 when it first came out. I wonder how many people have upgraded to 3.2006.49-2 (Nokia's latest from their website) and have experienced this infinite reboot loop?
I was doing nothing out-of-the-ordinary: latest OS2006, added:- maemo-mapper 1.4.7-2/libsqlite3/flite osso-xterm VNC mplayer mediastreamer sylpheed 2.2.0 few other utilities 24MB swap file on Nokia 64MB card I will see if I can narrow it down to the offending package. Any known offenders? regards, Clive |
Re: n770 not powering up
Might just be that you've run out of space on the internal memory. Make sure you have never any images / videos (even the nokia pre-installed ones) on teh devices internal memory. Especially make sure that maemo mapper will not store map files to internal memory, because that will 100% fill up your system in no time.

Re: n770 not powering up
So day #3 and I get hit by the infinite reboot loop again. This time only apps installed are:-
media-streamer maemo-mapper vnc viewer I like the suggestion that maemo mapper files are being saved to internal memory - I presume that is the default? I bet that's my problem then, since I was zooming all around the countryside marvelling at the various maps last night. I presume that maemo-mapper doesn't have a "oops, only 10%/10MB left, better not consume anymore file space" mode then? I will re-flash, reinstall same apps and set maemo-mapper to use MMC card instead of internal flash. thanks! Clive |
Re: n770 not powering up
Yeah, maemo-mapper will download maps to internal memory by default. After memory is full, system cannot boot anymore and you are stuck in the reboot loop. I feel this is a great flaw in the system - it should be able to release memory in such a situation. Also, warning user that the system is almost full would be very nice indeed.

Re: n770 not powering up
This seems a very plausible explanation.
So we're talking Maps>Manage Repositories>Cache Dir /media/mmc1/Maps/Google street I've changed that, and will see if the reboot loop returns. |
Re: n770 not powering up
I seem to have hijacked nextgengames' thread. Apologies! I may have identical issues though...
So I changed maemo-mappers map repository cache to point all map types to the MMC card, and yes, it quickly consumed the 50MB of the 64MB card available. Got an error from maemo-mapper when it ran out of space. But still, 50MB free on internal flash. Seemed OK, read some RSS stuff, checked emails, still OK. Did a power-button>Shut Off!, and then came to power back on later. Looping reboot, again (3rd time in as many days). So yet another reflash with latest 3.2006.49-2 (again) but this time I have not reinstalled:- maemo-mapper vncviewer (this is all I added to the original installation) I will continue to evaluate email/RSS feeds (again adding no new feeds) and see if looping reboots return. |
Re: n770 not powering up
Sounds really annoying thing. I hope you will be more lucky in the future. Anyway, let us know if it's fixed or if it continues.
|
Re: n770 not powering up
If you hook it up to a computer will the computer recognize it? If so you could just reinstall the firmware and that might fix the problem.

Re: n770 not powering up
So update on the 770 hitting the infinite reboot loop, requiring a reflash to gain normal operation (8th time already in 2 weeks).
Managed to get it to fail with latest 3.2006.49-2 fresh installed, and only VNCViewer 0.6 installed. About a day after installing VNCViewer, read RSS feeds (added nothing new), retrieved emails (1.6MB), I noticed the amount of Free Storage dropped from the typical 50+MB to ~29MB. So 20+MB got consumed somehow, and the Memory app struggled to display it. The Memory In Use kept creeping up past 12MB/25%, but never really completed (was awfully slow in terms of progress). The numbers didn't seem to add up as they had done earlier (when at 50+MB free). So I pressed the power button, selected Switch Off, waited a while, hit the power button and infinite reboot as I have come to expect. So this removed Maemomapper from the suspect list and left:- VNC Viewer 0.6 Default RSS feeds IMAP4 Email configuration Now I had Maemo mapper, RSS feeds, email running fine for a few days, and then added VNC Viewer 0.6 and it died within a few hours. I think my next test is not to install *any* apps and see if it dies with a default config. Suggestions? Conclusions? |

Yesterday Mapper traced a route whilst out on my MTB. I saved the track which turned out to be 1.2MB. Since then though I've hit a brick wall and cannot get the thing to start and launch an any application without freezing after a minute or so at most. If I can get Control Panel->Memory open in this time I have found that internal memory useage is between 80-100% so it appears the internal RAM is somewat "shafted" ! I'm just trying again now and it shows 65% (7.85MB) useage which is lower than it has been and 4.11MB free. 0kb for e-mail, 2.59MB Video, 4.77MB Audio...err and I can't scroll further down as its frozen again and will in time reboot itself. Fed up  Best Rgds FF |
Re: n770 not powering up
FunkyFreddy - you have redirected your Maps to be stored on the External MMC card, right? I can see how Maemomapper (default config) will consume internal memory when downloading maps. Check earlier in this thread. I thought this was my problem, but I still got crashes when maps were stored on the external MMC card, and even without Maemo Mapper installed!
I now suspect VNC Viewer 0.6, but can't confirm this until I get another crash *without* it installed. |
Re: n770 not powering up
Yet another infinite reboot loop since reflashing yesterday, but I can now eliminate VNC Viewer since it was not installed. What was installed:-
Maemo Mapper (with maps on MMC card) Mediastreamer 1.2-12 maemo-bt-plugin 0.6.1-1 load-applet 0.6.4-2 My conclusion is now confused, since crashing appears to occur if more than one or two apps are loaded. Is the latest 3.2006.49-2 stable? How much swap space is recommended (I've been using 16MB) Do people use mistral or gregale repositories? |
Re: n770 not powering up
I don't want to thread-jack, but did want to add my two cents.
I had the same issue over the last few days. For me, uninstalling unused apps and removing files from the internal memory did the trick. I never actually reflashed and have rebooted several times since. I have not however, used maemo mapper at all... Never installed it. |
Re: n770 not powering up
New turn in events - having reinstalled 3.2006.49-2 and then added
load-applet 0.6.4-2 maemo-bt-plugin 0.6.1-1 maemo-recorder 0.21 mediastreamer 1.2-12 osso-xterm 0.13 I see I have Device - 1% used (Storage mem in use 1.27MB, available 64.4MB) Memory card - 77% used (13.3MB available) Virtual 32MB enabled I then hit the power switch, select "Switch off!" and it powers off OK. Now the issue:- pressing the power button would not turn it back on! Tried taking the battery out, still holding the power button gave a blank/black screen (no Nokia logo). This persisted over many power-on attempts. Battery was fully charged. Decided to reflash, so hold home/hit power, USB logo immediately pops up OK. Tried an experiment - disconnected USB, tablet then decided to boot up OK! And continues to power off/boot OK since. Any explanations very welcome! regards, Clive |
Re: n770 not powering up
After about 10 poweroff/poweron cycles, I could then no longer get it to power on. Attempts to connect USB would fail with 'device failure' on the PC. Connecting charger would always show the charge icon OK. Leaving the charger in, and suddenly after a minute or so the 770 booted just fine all by itself! (no buttons pressed to make it do this). Battery icon still shows 4 full bars - it had been on charge for 2 hours prior.
So what could possibly prevent the unit powering on to the NOKIA logo screen when pressing the power button? Bad battery? Faulty unit? Bug in 3.2006.49-2 ? |

After my reflash the other day with OS2006, no MMC and only the System Monitor plugin installed Control Panel -> memory was reporting: Device = 11% Used Storage Mem in use 7.84MB Storage Mem available 59.7MB Installed applications 184kb My reported Device Memory usage seems much higher than yours ? The SMP plugin reported: Root 50% - 123M, 62M free MMC - not mounted RAM 80% - 60M, 12M free I posted a bit more in this thread - no replies as yet :( RGds FF |
