In addition to what qwazix says, you can easly confirm this with the SDK. If you start the swipe from within the screen (aka "pull"), you get the pulley menu. If you start the swipe from above the screen (aka "push", hard enough to do with the SDK but possible nonetheless), you go back to the list of apps.

I've just confirmed it.

The usual issue is having 1080p videos laying around and wanting to play them on your mobile device. Transcoding them to lower resolution might not be trivial and even quite time demanding if you are transcoding to 720p, not to some lower resolution. Also stuf like metadata, embedded subtitle tracks or additional audio tracks might get lost during that. It is just not very convenient and most of the generic Chinese phones/tablets do that just fine due to mainstream SOCs supporting that in hardware.

Closing apps by pushing down is not included in sdk.

See the release notes known issues:

You are correct, even though the release notes don't say that, but the pages do include: "A push from the top closes the app".

So, same as N9 then.

The release notes say it:

The gesture plugin is outdated; Push down does not terminate applications; other gestures are not available on the Emulator.

To ggabriel, I got to try nexus 7 few times and the capability of it being able to playback all of my x264 movies on SMB drive streamed over is simply amazing, I want my next phone to be able to do that. About reencoding for proper playback, no I don't want to reencode all my videos to suite smaller screen in case I suddenly want to watch them.

Has anyone thought about the difference between the Jolla Ltd Edition and a regular Jolla? Could it be different hardware? They say it could work with both AMOLED and LCD could the limited edition be AMOLED? They say it could work with different hardware? Could the limited edition be a small run of the ST-Erricson which is probably available sooner than there new sourced parts? I can see how easy a special edition Other Half is to create but what is the Limited Edition Jolla?

Thanks for explaining, and fair enough... I've got a similar set up at home but I can't think why I'd use my phone instead of my home theatre.
We are talking, however, about relatively advanced stuff... I am not sure this use case applies to most people.

I do agree with you that it'd be a nice to have, on the understanding that I won't be sacrificing 25-40% of my battery life to have that option.

They said they will support landscape in places where it makes sense. For example the media gallery.

I'd say it'd be nice to lock it or unlock it at will. First of all, the apps have to support a seamless landscape/portrait mode, and secondly I'd like a setting to lock an app (or the phone temporarily) on something.

Example of an app that can't be in landscape mode: [pick your airline] app - boarding pass has to be locked in portrait, else nobody will ever succeed to scan it. They have trouble now with my work iPhone, which is locked in portrait, let alone if the screen keeps changing from landscape to portrait and viceversa.

Example of an app that I'd like to lock into landscape mode: Nokia Maps when I'm using it as a GPS on the bicycle. Hit a speed bump, unevenness on the road, whatever, it's likely that the map will switch from landscape to portrait, sometimes staying in the latter, which is annoying.

Errrm... I use my N900 almost exclusively in landscape mode. :eek:

So for me, landscape makes sense in all instances as well.

2 things I hate about the N9, well actually 4.
1) The only flash capable browser is very slow. It is extremely annoying.
2) When I click on a facebook newsfeed item the little uninformative facebook thing comes up which says exactly the same brief thing I just read and then when I click on that link and I'm in landscape the status bar is stuck in portrait because the fb app is landscape only so I can't peek
3) The screen is too small for typing and swype, I'm constantly hitting wrong keys.
4) Takes way too long to rotate. If you can fix that with sailfish I'm sold.

This is real, it is just about the only annoying thing about N9.
I wonder what makes it so slow (and unreliable!) to detect position change...

The feeling of slow rotation is augmented by the too many unneeded rotations. Swipe away from the browser: rotate. Go to another browser window: rotate. All apps must update layout each time.

The choice of rotation being in-app instead of in window manager was wrong.

I agree. Why is it not possible to lock the rotation per app? Or did I miss something?

It depends... Some apps is just not logical in landscape and vise versa. So if WM managed it should atleast have a WMproperty so app can set to not rotate.

Anyone knows how this is implemented in new WM?

(if I remember correct they use lipstick like nemo?)

The slow rotation is due to the animation (which has a duration of 800ms). If you use a simple item as the root object, the rotation is almost instantaneous, e.g:

Code:

import QtQuick 1.1
import com.nokia.meego 1.0

Item {
    id: appWindow

    width: screen.displayWidth
    height: screen.displayHeight

    Label {
        id: label

        anchors.centerIn: parent
        text: "In landscape"
        font.bold: true
        font.pixelSize: 40
        color: "white"
    }

    states: State {
        name: "portrait"
        when: screen.currentOrientation === Screen.Portrait
        PropertyChanges { target: label; text: "In portrait"; rotation: 270 }
    }
}

Applications on Harmattan can easily lock their rotatation any many applications support that. But there is no global rotation lock, which might be an issue. For example, at least Android & webOS have a global rotation lock. It could be quite handy when for example having the device positioned on a flat surface (where it might get false triggers for rotation), operating it in inclined body orientation (AKA laying on side) or as mentioned - in a moving vehicle.

Ok, so let me go back on topic: If I am understanding correctly, with your 100€ pre-order, you get:

- A standard and in no way different to the others Jolla phone (you just get it first than the others)
- A t-shirt.
- That box with all those coloured covers.

Am I right?

I did understand it this way:
  • A limited edition Jolla (whatever that is)
  • A T-shirt
  • A 100€ voucher

Yeah, yeah, as seen in their web page. But keeping the marketing away, all this "Other Half" stuff, what does it mean? Something it has to do with the back of the phone, sure. The covers. Do you really expect Jolla to surprise us, pre-order guys, with some "exclusive" other half, like a hwkb or a gamepad? No, and me neither. What would it be: coloured covers. That box. Or not even that. Just one different colour.

And the "super special limited edition" jolla phone... The phone with a limited edition serial number? I bet is nothing special

And I'm sorry to say that. As I said before, I really want to believe, to be eager for the waiting, and I read a lot of information about jolla and the phone, but... To the moment, they failed at selling it to me.

PD: And sorry for all the rant, but my hopes with the company are slowly fading away as I see the zero professionality, the poorly managed presentations, the lack of proper and useful information... I don't like the "Peter Molyneux" way of selling a product they have choosen.

If you don't feel confident putting down 100euro for your preorder and you only have interest, select the free option. They are not forcing anyone to choose the limited edit and special back cover. It could be something spectacular? It could be something mundane. I wish I had the opportunity but I live in the USA and we can't choose that option.

If people is expecting limited edition is HWKBD they'r plain stupid *****s.

Its probadly "special designed" backcase or something like that.

100EUR lower price for us who preorder thats good enought for me. Also I do it because I support them. I personally KNOW how hard it is for upstart companys to get it going. But I like the idea with Jolla and hope they can success even if they only will be little player on the market.

And about "proffesional skills" for got sake don't compare a little company with bosses like Bill Gates, Ballmer or Steve Jobs or even Mr Flop.

Atleast Jolla has a vision! Compared to Nokia who has sold theyr soul to Microsoft :(
