Yeah it's just a press release, but really, what's driving a company which makes *only* Linux devices to use Word?.. Can't they even convince their own employees to use FLOSS software?.. Heck, LibreOffice runs great on Windows too.

Fuzzillogic: You'll be surprised, even some employees of RedHat use Windows :) Companies usually try not to enforce that too much, since some people are just more familiar with Word and it affects their productivity I guess.

Sun used to be strict and forced employees to use OpenOffice internally. No idea what Oracle does now for example.

Libre AND office sucks both bigtime. People should use LaTex for pressreleases and documention :p Thats the only way that works and creates correct PDF files. M$ PDF exporter makes me wanna puke

I hope Dec. is a slight exaggeration, & that they can get it to the 1st markets in Nov, or even Oct.

My guess was before they ssaid Qt5/Wayland that they may release around december but now I would not be suprised if they change to begining of next year.

For two reasons:

1. Migration may take more time than expected. After testing the latest SDK I have seen more issues than the old release.

2. The reason theyt swicth to wayland could be related to libhybris eg: they decided to go for some GFX HW that only supports Android drivers.

But that I am not trying to be negative. Just saying... However if Wayland/Qt slows don release I def not have a problem with that cause stick to Qt4.8 would harm alot more atleast on the app area...

Well yes, if you are talking about "word processing" which is a misnormer anyways and most of times a horrible overkill... I rarely use anything else than emacs & vi as my word processing tools and they do nicely for me, thank you.

But there are some tools that really are the killer application in office suites, be thy libre or legacy, and that's spreadsheets.
be it calc, exel, lotus, whatever, but that's the killer application on office tools. I couldn't go far without a sheet to type my numbers in :D

I hope switch to Wayland is accompanied with native drivers, and not with libhybris, and it's made because Wayland simply performs better.

I reckon that in the grand scheme of things, this may be quite tiny, but if you put in context that Jolla is a small company (is it the smallest that is doing a device+OS?), 50k devices booked is very good news for them - if it is true that they need to sell 100k devices, having booked half of that even before the device is actually out is very encouraging for them as a business.

The key thing that I take away is: they are likely to have a decent lifetime as a company, hence more devices will come, and support will exist for anything they produce. Obvious questions are quality, etc., but we'll have to see. The competition isn't very good at post-sale support, so it isn't like they have to match very high standards.

Haven't seen this in TMO yet:

Smartphone with Sailfish OS coming soon to India

Jolla listened to the Community and overworked the device:)

2) "Camera" you say?? Yes you are right, the rear camera is now centred along with the flash... woop woop.. giving a clear balanced imaging experience

3) The front camera has been repositioned slightly left to neatly position the earpiece. If you look closely the sensor and the front camera are is the same distance from the earpiece.. looks more geometrically consistent.

4) The power button is now on top right and the volume rocker below it, seamlessly integrated to the more compact body.

5) The ‪#‎other‬ ‪#‎half‬ (back cover) is now looks a real part of the front half with less distinct edges for better grip and reduces the thickness (I guess?).

6) You see the main microphone exactly on the centre of the body below the screen and the noise cancelling microphone has been moved from back cover to top - between the USB port and the embedded shining Jolla logo.

7) According to source ZDNet - "a spokesperson for the start up (Jolla) said that the typical size of a production batch for a mobile device vendor is 50,000 units.".. which gives us an assumption of number of units sold

8)After Jolla "received pre-orders from 136 countries" both consumers and "selected sales channels" have bought out the first batch, which it still expects to deliver by the end of the year.

9) Last but not the least, here is what Jolla CEO Tomi Pienimäki confirmed to ZDNet:

"For those, who missed the first opportunity, we are now doing our best to offer a SECOND CHANCE, a new batch of Jolla smartphones later in the autumn. I encourage everyone interested in Jolla to sign up at www.jolla.com and be the first to know about any new developments, such as the opening of the next pre-sales campaign."

i'd be happy if this was the case, because the presumption would be a modern SoC which I believe would be ebenficial for the same reason as moving to Qt5/Wayland. :)

Yeah but based on chats I had before the official announcement, I think they decided to make that move long before the announcement, even though it was "surprising" to us.
So I reckon December was most likely always factoring the move to Qt/Wayland/libhybris, of course, it's probably always been a "optimistic" estimation.

As I've understood in my chats with them, one of the main reasons the switch was done, was to accommodate libhybris & hence better hw support.
libhybris was never going to be practical with Qt4/X, they decided the advantages that Qt5/Wayland/libhybris brings, outweighs sticking with Qt4x/X for at least the 1st device.

Yeah but, is that their official Facebook page? I'm tired of this social communication crud, they should put it on official site(s), or official social channels at the very least.
Until we see it coming from those places, it's just hot air....

Will the price drop to 299 Euro before release? If it's true that they sold +50000 the could afford to lower the price and increase volume and market share. 399 is acceptable but not == what you get.

Sure, in general. I mean, I hope in their first device at least they managed to get the native drivers. But, what can you do, if not.

Well even if I agree it would be nice with native drivers, we have to realise the facts that to many manufactors does only provide Android drivers :(

This is also true on many "non smartphone" embedded SoC's this days :(

mikecomputing: Jolla said, that it's not impossible to convince manufacturers to produce drivers, but you need to "impress" them with high potential sales figures or to pay a lot. I think Jolla can aspire for a lot of sales, they are not some amateur project.

Makes me think of one of my projectleaders at work. He is using m$ office and everytime I open the document in libre/open it is broken. And then someday I said to him to export to PDF. Ofcourse the M$ did break it. I am damn suprised M$ cantdoit correct when open apps doing it. I am also suprised okular works WAY better than adobes own pdf reader.

I just say this opensource rocks :) Btw to be ontopic again because I am a bigfan of KDE community also I found this on planetkde:

Jolla cooperate with kde also :D

I sure hope it's going to be the full office suite and not just a viewer.
I have no intrest really to use android apps if native are available :D

Full suite imo only makes sense on larger devices. I never had the urge to edit documents on my N9. When I do want to edit documents, I'd rather have full, no compromises Calligra or Libreoffice and use a keyboard + mouse/pointing device.

(Also, I don't have a tablet, because I find the current crop pǝpɹɐʇǝɹ. They have full HDs screen, are more than capable of running full desktop OSses, some of them can even dock keyboards with touchpads, but thanks to their limiting OSses can't even run the LibreOffice. I really like the concept of KDE's Plasma Active, and be able to seamlessly "transform" from tablet-use to laptop-use.)

True, but that "high potential sales" could be a problem.

I mean "ten tousands preorders" is not directly high volumes...

They got only about 100 employees. It's plenty enough for covering the costs of their business.

For having only two corporate clients. It's plenty enough.

Anybody thinking that they'll be Apple or Google? Ridiciously small number. Neglible.

Then again, I just want a semi-decent phone. Already have the t-shirt. So ****ing tired of arm chair business analysis.

Well, I don't mind libhybris if that's the only option. May be Intel chips will soon blow ARM out, and the next Jolla handset will sport an Intel GPU with open drivers :) The whole ARM industry is just sick.

I start believe there is no Jolla phone, everything may be a hoax made by Mr Elop.

I also heard that Marc DIllon actually is Stephen Elops stephson...

And the money they got from the preorder will goto R&D for upcoming Wp8 phones at Nokia.

The images were released at their g+ and facebook accounts for some reason. And they were quite horribly .jpg compressed, so there's lot of compression artifacts, but I haven't noticed anything that seems blatantly photoshopped?
