That would be a very expensive solution for such simple use. If you'd use NFC for that, you can't use that NFC-antenna (and probably chip) for any other NFC-use anymore, as there always will be an NFC-tag interfering with it. The one in the cover.

Woop! Back cover can contain intelligence and more hardware.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/20/j...hardware-tour/
Seems "everything is possible". Where the contacts/interface is and exactly how it works is unclear but this is good news for everyone on here I reckon.

Pre-ordering folks get a limited edition Other Half.

How amazing would it be if the Other Half was a HWKB?

Jolla themselves certainly seem to be indicating that a HWKB is a possibility.

Yeah I like that a lot.
As a music nut I wonder could it be possible to example fit slightly larger battery there and proper headphone amp. Would be amazing.

no

I very much doubt that. At least I hope nobody here who pays the 100 euros expects that. :)

Yes, this is great news and opens the market for really genuine accessories. HWKB, bigger battery, better camera, you name it...

I am very interested in this device. I can have my N9 with a little more horsepower and some android compatibility (without actually running Android). I am definitely in for a pre-order!

know what?
except trying to "connect" N9 & 808PV, i never got around to use NFC
ever
so, why not?
& could always provide a blend back cover w/out NFC tag, for other uses; it's a bloody piece of polymer (aka plastic), right?

don't think so
for €40,- you get a t-shirt
for €100.- you get... a t-shirt and at release time the device for €299 instead of €399, probably with a special back cover, like your personalized Credit Card sort of thing....

Uhm, you pay 100€ for the 100€ voucher. So why do you get the device for 299€?

you lucky living in country where "pre-order" is possible
you "pre-ordering"
you getting t-shirt (€40,-) + voucher (€100.-)
you ordering Jolla device
you using voucher (€100.-) + CC or whatever (€299.-) to pay for Jolla device

any question?

of course, it could also be that at release time, there will be a connectable hw kbd worth €100.- and you can order that "for free"

I'm hoping it's an inductive charging thingy, which would hint at back covers having more intelligence and the potential of a HWKB "other half" for those that want it, but I can't see any metal contacts on either half. How would that work? Am I missing something? Is it just an NFC tag to say what colour the plastic is? Let's hope all is revealed at the event later.

It is a render, so connector may not be shown. But that hole in the cover is a possible connector for a keyboard half.

I just wanted to point out that you basically get the t-shirt for free (along with the device and exclusive other half etc).

if "the other half" happens to include an optional hw kbd (battery?) or whatever, you'll get that against your voucher.
or you could use the voucher simply to pay for the device itself.
and you'll get a special feature (more likely thematic then functional) for your device.
like a back cover with a nice picture or something & a matching theme.

but yes, apologises, my post was unclear about that. thanks for the clarification

I don't actually think we'll get a free HW keyboard, it's a pipe dream of course.

But the noises coming out from Jolla seem to suggest that HW keyboard is coming. If it comes, I assume we pay extra for it.

Malaysia support should come soon, since a lot of n9's were sold here :-)

Some interesting details that I haven't seen before in this video:

http://www.hs.fi/videot/N%C3%A4in+to...v1305680047144

In the beginning (around 15 seconds mark) we can see "Jolla store". After that you can see there Stefano's comment "This is the best cloud storage app I've seen". Not sure what's the context there, but it could mean Jolla has their own cloud storage built-in.

and in that video also more apps/games were shown ( like angry birds )

The device is huge. Even bigger then BB Z10 while having a smaller screen. Why such big bezel?
The only other phone with this big bezels top and bottom is iPhone. And only because they have that huge button there and they want the top and bottom to be symmetric.

The bezel is a fail IMHO. They could have made the phone N9 size.

Edit: spelling

have to agree on that :(
maybe a price to pay for not being in "control" of their own manufacturing?

EDIT: on the other hand, what we saw today (and is shown in all the videos & pictures) may just be... a proof of concept (namely for the other half)
maybe the final product will be (much) smaller

Well, you need to refresh your knowledge about NFC tags :D
In reality you can detect&interact with multiple tags present at the same location. There's a binary tree search&identify scheme for tag addressing that takes care of the low level data transfer.

What this means; having one tag permanently attached to your phone does not in any way interfere using other tags. It's all just how you implement the uppermost SW layer.

that big a55 bezel just kills me. this looks so incredible cheap and ugly. motorola razr i fits a 4.3" display in a shell that is just as big as the n9! this beast is as big as the galaxy s4 with lower screen size. i'm disappointed so far. i wished a bezelles device, and i get the exact opposite :(

i rly like the sailfish os and i hope for a stable port for the n9

It was asked previously from Jolla people, and the answer was, "there's not going to be DRM on the device". I interpret that to mean that if there is something resembling AEGIS it will be user configurable.

since we can attach anything we want to the bottom, if this has inductive charging can we not attach another battery there? You see lots of cases with battery packs and what not, we'll why not just have one that attaches one, a different accessory for every occasion.

My first impressions - the bezel is way to big as others have mentioned, and also no low power mode is a bit of a shame.

But the bezel kills it for me - makes the phone too big IMHO

Yeah I agree. Everything else is as I expected and the screen resolution looks to even be better than I expected/feared.

BUT that bezel all around is just huge. Makes the device look like 200 euros Android phone.

A new video posted on iltasanomat http://www.iltasanomat.fi/digi/art-1288566945106.html (in finnish)

Key points:

-android applications will support true multitasking too
-the other half can be used like work / free time profiles, ring-tones, including different email profiles, overall look of the device, and even different apps (the other half is recognized wirelessly)
-the concept is build the way it technically supports any add-ons
-you can buy more of these other halves in future
