I think I can say I with quite good confidence that we're well aware of the things that weren't ideal about Nokia's update process. We hope to do better.

Not at this time. We're being very limiting in what APIs we expose to applications that want to go into the store initially until we can make sure that:
  • it'll meet the usecases you want
  • we can promise forwards-compatibility (good quality API, and being careful with the implementation to avoid exposing internal implementation details etc)
  • it's well documented as to how to use it, and how to use it well

I kicked off some discussion earlier today about how we prioritize exposing new API. I imagine we'll want to offer up some kind of voting mechanism to store developers, but there's nothing clearly decided there yet.

I assume that GCM is out of the scope because it's part of the Google Play API, which you'd get only if you had Google approved Android.

I'm not at all knowledgable on the Android front of things, so I can't answer you directly. I'll try remember to ask around and get back to this.

As long as the operators has no intrests the rest of EU is low priority.

So if you want them to speedup EU released you should ask the damn operators. I spam them daily in my country atm. But so far those idiots( TRE, Telenor, Telia) has not responded :(

Mind you, still feels wrong that we are getting better info from Jolla's partners than from Jolla itself.

The most logical translate this as:

"The lucky first preorders on DNA will get their phone on 27 November at the launch and the rest soon after DNA preorders - all who made a pre-booking will be contacted"

Because why on earth would DNA care about the rest of us. Its most logical that theyr post talks about DNA customers NOT Jolla directly.

I can't give a full picture of how things are going to work at this time, but:
  • We plan to do frequent updates. Not once a week, but more often than twice a year.
  • It's important to us to get new features and bugfixes out to you guys as often as possible, and to react fast to your feedback, rather than only rolling out a perfect phone and never updating it.

@w00t
Any plans about public bug tracking? I think it was great idea with Maemo.

Offtopic: Jolla needs more people like you and @stskeeps that interact with us! That "live" amongst us, that make us feel like a part of something we like. We(I) really need people that listen to us and explain. We(I) can accept a lot of things when I know the reason, but the silence just makes us(me) feel ousted.

No news at this time. There are some people amongst us who want it to happen, and I guess there is some likelihood of it happening. You could always volunteer to set one up yourself, and see how it goes ;).

Personally, I have reservations, and don't think the Maemo tracker worked all that well - here's why. I don't think an external tracker can ever truly work as long as we have an internal tracker. But due to reasons of simply not being able to make everything we do public (third parties and more), we will still need an internal tracker.

And as long as it exists, that internal tracker would get more attention simply because it's what we've always used. That means that the external tracker would be left to the few people who already make efforts to reach out and talk to people through alternate means, or worse - get stuck with someone like Andre Klapper who has to take the flak of the people posting on the public tracker and insulate everyone else from it. Not ideal at all.

P.S. this neglect can already be seen somewhat in the Mer and Nemo trackers. They're both set up and running, and have been for a very long time. Mer's bug count is up around the 800s mark, Nemo's is around the 700s mark. Our internal tracker is about to hit 13000. This despite that a good quantity of the software we work on is open.

It's a hard problem.

Well you can just mark the sensitive bugs and commits private (only accesible to internal bugzilla user group).

At least that seems to be the way public/private bugzillas are handled elsewhere and it seems to be working just fine. :)

We won't be publishing live repositories. Look at e.g. the SDK releases for how it'll happen.

But at least we have some release date. But how is jolla thinking?

If you're still around w00t (Robin)....
Now might be a good time to explain worldwide* availability/roll-out plans (as vague as they may be right now) "one more time".
For people like Dave, for whom things never seem to sink in...
Regarding your prior posts, I've got a number of points I want to address, but I'll leave it till after I've had some sleep -time permitting.

Just got an e-mail from dna, apparently I've been invited to Narikkantori 27.11 event. A small bit of info for you: at 18:00, if there's space left (=if not all of the 450 "chosen ones" are present I presume), also others can get in. Maximum of 450 people can be there.

Wasn't surprised that I got the invite, I was there 20.5 12:00 making a preorder when the whole site was about to crash :D (got it trough though:p)
Too bad unexpected events have drained all my cash reserves so I won't be able to participate:(

PS: The event is K-18 so I guess there'll be booze and stuff:rolleyes:

I was there in the very first minutes pre-ordering the phone, but it seems like you indeed needed to order that 100 euro one. As on the invite the final price is said to be 299 euros.
So no Jolla phone for me on launch day.

How do you get invites?
Finns only?
DNA sign up?
Random jolla orders?

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

I am glad to hear that people invited are a part of the first preorder.

I was under impression that today's announcement didn't take 'The First Ones' into consideration. It would make sense to start shipping on the 27th - it is not their fault I don't live in Helsinki and it might take few days to ship it to the Czech Republic.

@JollaHQ Great! I think you should announce that explicitly, to avoid a lot of confusion and bad energy on this great day

Jolla ‏@JollaHQ 1 min
@decibyte It is said in the announcement: http://www.dna.fi/en/dnagroup/press/...er%202013.aspx …"

Don´t know how the 450 are chosen, but I would guess them being the first 450 Finns who chose the 100e pre-order.

Bellyaching about not getting an invite/announcement/email about the first 450 shouldn't really be amplified. If anything, the way that w00t has taken to this thread and clarified things in a very clear and concise manner is greatly appreciated. That's the part that should be listened to...

Thanks for the clarifications and setting a lot of details straight.

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

Personally I think it's poor form, if we're only talking about 450 units surely they could've afforded to send them equally to all corners of the earth*, seems like bias against non-Finns & those who didn't lay down $100EUD. It should've been a mixture of people from around the world who were in the 1st pre-order campaign, some who donated $100/40, & some who didn't. It's not a huge deal, but I do think it's pretty insensitive, especially for a tiny start-up that regularly likes to chant about being in touch with emotions & caring. Anyway, hopefully later I'll have time raise more important concern/criticisms relating some of w00ts points, bed time.

*it's not like they'd be completely subsidising shipping costs, or giving the items away for free

"- Suunnittelemme silti päivittävämme laitteistoa ensi vuoden toisella puoliskolla, jotta pysymme mukana rautapuolen kilpailussa, Saarnio kertaa."

Rough translation: We´re nevertheless planning to update the hardware during the second half of next year to keep us in the hardware competition, Saarnio concludes.

Before that he says that TOH gives the device a bit longer shelf life than normal phones, hence the "nevertheless".

"Saarnion mukaan yhtiö aikoo julkaista joka kuukausi uuden version Sailfish-käyttöjärjestelmästään. "

They´re planning to update a new version of Sailfish every month.
