Any indication so far whether the maps app will be online/offline?

Ordered 23.05 and did not get an invitation so far (with the 100€ preorder, and in Finland) Really hoping I would get one since I have a day off, and my N9 simtray is starting to fall apart and I'm hoping I can cope with it till my Jolla arrives..

If it's anything like the Maps on the Lumia 800/N9 there'll definitely be an offline option.

I would hope so, but there was mention of the word 'cloud' in one of the announcements which makes me unsure

is Apello maps the official Jolla maps or third party sailfish maps?

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

This is what I hate of the real world. Most end consumers don't understand open source or how the os is with the hardware. All they care about is - specs, SPECS, SPECSS! and will it have xyz app? Now Jolla has made a compromise where you can run android apps on the device. Yet people are still complaining about the Yandex store. Why? Does it need to have GOOGLE'S name in the store? Yandex store has most of the "MUSTHAVE" software for the end user. Why?

arrrrghhhhhhh. can't wait. who lives in finland?!?!?!?! i want this device so badly but live many miles from finland in another continent! :(

actually, to be honest, jolla's allure for me is the software - the OS. not the hardware.

It's Sailfish official maps.
Map data is coming from Nokia's Here platform and the frontend is made by Apello.

Sorry, I don't buy that, what I suggested wasn't extremely unreasonable, in fact, it would've been the ideal way for them to go.
Hopefully they'll have other such programs soon-ish that even out the imbalance, or maybe they just won't bother at all.

Yes, at first I pre-ordered the 0€ option and I received the order queue No. One week later, the 100€ option was available in my country and I ordered this option too.

Based on what people are saying in Jollafr.org the first 450 phones were ordered in less than 1 hour.

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

What makes you think that? At least the last screenshot on this news article seems to be turn navigation?
http://www.mobil.se/nyheter/svenskt-...-1.528055.html

Also the FAQ on Jolla.com seems to be updated. Most interesting bit:
Quote:

When and where will Jolla launch first?

The launch party is on 27 November at Narinkka Square in Helsinki, Finland, where DNA will setup a pop-up store and deliver the world’s first pre-ordered Jolla. At the event a total of 450 Jollas will be sold to customers who have pre-ordered their phones in the first pre-booking campaign. At the same time, we will start mail deliveries in the order of pre-bookings.
So even if you aren't at the launch party, it should be many days until you get your Jolla :)

Mine is empty too, I have a Order ID, but not a Pre-Book Order queue number.

I thought the order ID is your "Queue number". They won't tell your actual position on the queue, because that would reveal how many orders there actually was...

True, altough now we can be almost sure that at least 450 devices have been pre-ordered :D

They're doing the core/native/stock app for Jolla, they're contracted by them... *EDIT* Too late, already answered twice, oh well.

- Instructions for online purchase will be sent to all pre-booking cusomers before the launch event

Great for those in the EU, but still no update on those in China or elsewhere, which is most of the world.
Hopefully soon after the 27th we'll have at least "some" more clarity on all of that...

Notice I said "or elsewhere", China+EU is still only a fraction of the world...
And even China plans are still very vague, good news about those in the EU being able to order direct from the 27th, that's an okay start.
Yes I know the link, I have read it....

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

I admit I was a bit disappointed by the communication during slush. The updated FAQs now give alle the information I need.

The way I see it, DNA as the only carrier supporting Jolla so far is given some kind of a ius primae noctis. The Jolla-Launch is basically a DNA-event and Jolla will be able to ship to their customers only afterwards.

Makes sense. Also, because the invitations are sent to the first people who ordered in the first pre-order, it's very unlikely to be invited at all...

I understand that DNA wants some of the PR for themselves, it's reasonable and at least it's not for people from Finland (or worse, for DNA customers) only.

So, you know exactly where those 450 are from, the % of them that are not from Finland/EU, & the % that were not $40/100 pre-orders?*
I'd not expect those %'s to be high, but I'd certainly expect some solid representation, if not in this initial promo, then at least in another very soon afterwards.

*the 1st pre-order program is what should be used, the 2nd one was Finland-only & was much later

The FAQ clarifies a lot, I´m grateful for it as well.

On the launch event: while it is PR for DNA, I see it serving primarily those who deserve it: the first pre-orderers. I don´t see it being a bad thing, especially as the pre-orderers will probably get thei phones delivered before DNA starts to sell the phones in their proper stores. Or do you think that the phones should be shipped even before the launch event?

Many people have reported here that they have gotten the invitation, both in Finland and elsewhere (in Europe). This is opposite from Jolla said in Twitter yesterday (only Finns invited), but I´m happy it turned out this way.

On the craziness of yesterday it was mentioned on twitter by some Jolla people or on a article that shipment of Jolla phones were on their way just now.
It seems like they got a small amount of phones and decided to share them this way to some of the very first who pre-ordered. Can't see anything wrong with that. Getting at least the Finnish community together in such a big event.

I would absolutely be there, if I was invited.

Yes, there's been reports of people outside Finland being invited, in this thread even. All have been 100€ preorderers. From the 450 all are 100€ first-wave preorderers... It wouldn't even make sense if the invites were given out randomly. Outside of 450 people attending... are probably some Jolla & DNA staff... and apparently some filming crew. Unknown if more.

While in principle I support the notion that they be handed out to literally the 1st 450 i.e. "I'm the 1st one".
I highly doubt that every single one of those 1st 450 pre-orders were: (1) in the EU, (2) $100 pre-orders.

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

Maybe someone get the device then sell it at once outside DNA shop with higher price?

This is a good business and have good profit

Thoke 2013-11-15 09:16

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

Well at first glance it seems the invites were picked from first-wave 100€ preorders. Furthermore it seems they were picked based on the time the preorders were made. Many reports of the first ones being invited (including me). Not ultimate proof though, but it all points out to that direction.

well, cloud is very popular word this days. I believe that it relates to some online services like real traffic data or weather or........ I don't know what else they have. I always use my nav off line, only turn by turn is all I need.

What is the point of announcing a successor before selling the original device? You can only achieve lower sales of the first device and disappoint those who have already preordered.

For me, it is encouraging that Jolla are already planning further devices - and planning regular OS updates. This gives me hope, when compared to the Nokia N9, which seemed to be unloved / unsupported by it's own manufacturer.

I think ongoing, active support will make quite a difference. And also the foundations put in place by the Mer and Nemo communities.

I find it interesting to note the following in Jolla's FAQ:

Quote:

Can others who didn’t pre-order get the device before me?

All pre-order customers are being prioritized before everyone else, including all our international customers.

from those videos I seem to feel they should only let Mark Dillon do PR stuff, I get he isn't the CEO, but he has charisma and from what I can tell true passion about the product. Tomi Pienimäki may have the same but he just can't seem to deliver it as his english doesn't seem all amazing. Just my two cents.
