So yes, having the clock and notifications etc. always on is possible on LCD screen, but battery drain will be nowhere near the LPM on AMOLEDs. It just do not make sense on LCDs.

But something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu746hqoP4E could still be implemented? Don't know how much it would drain the battery if you'd chose the "always on" mode with this kind of screen, but with proximity sensor, it would at least shut it self down when in your pocket, as in N9.

To add to zlatko's explanation re L920, if I set the LPS to on during the night, the battery drains around 40-45% in 8hours so its pretty useless...

But if one charges his/her phone during the night, that wouldn't be such a big problem? And you could still use it as a night clock in that case.

if jolla wants to steal regular users from android/iOS it must be easier to restore device with something like one click button. whats jollas move here? you cant tell joe on the steet to download a file and whrite in commandline...

Members of the OHA are not allowed to ship devices that do what Jolla does with Android applications. Remember what happened to Acer when they tried it?

I'm yet to install this on my 1020, it should be interesting to see what the results are.
(Woops I forgot, 1020 display uses AMOLED, so it'll no doubt work differently)

It'll be interesting if it finally gets to the point that Samsung calls Google's bluff on that one with real shipping end-user devices.
Will Google come down hard, or will they just say "naughty boy" & give Samsung a light slap on the wrist.

There will probably be application for that.
You just open it and it shows clock+some data and you leave that on overnight.

This keeps coming back up on #jollamobile. Nokia have already used an LPS on a non-AMOLED screen. It's not as bright, and I haven't seen a comparison of power consumption, but it does work.

However, this doesn't mean that Jolla will be using this (I can't find a quote, but I'm pretty sure their Twitter said they weren't at one point). It does mean, though, that if developers have enough HW access to the Jolla device, such a feature could be added.

I vaguely recall reading they were working on it, but my memory lately has been horrendous.
It'd be great to get official word on whether they have plans, even if it's a long way off & LP.

All I know is the LPS was an awesome feature of the N9 and if it can be duplicated with minimal impact on battery life sign me up.

what hw access would be needed?

It requires low level hardware access to the display, so that one can lower the refresh rate significantly. The backlight battery drain is not too much compared with the screen refreshing at 60fps.

This is about to turn into an interesting how open is Sailfish OS question.

They don't work on it, or at least made it clear they wanted to avoid any misunderstanding on that matter: https://twitter.com/JollaHQ/status/388588752357953536

However, it suggests that something similar to Lumia's glance could be achieved. Even with high energy consumption, I'd buy it. As stated above, it would still be better energy-wise than keeping full display (by preventing locked screen). Plus with proximity-sensor-based activity, this LPSish screen would only work a few minutes/hours a day, and only when necessary when the phone cannot be touched every 2 sec to check status and clock (car, bike, running, meetings, night)

Even with associated battery drain when on, such a feature would definitely be an improvement in my opinion. And if battery's a problem, then just disable the feature or keep your proximity sensor covered by keeping the device upside down or in pocket.

Ok so it will be very gricky and not for the average user. Its damn sad that that this multicolor led didn't break. Jolla should have made it there sign and trademark and could be adjusted to the color of the other side. That feature is pure genius.

Wait, they have changed their plans about the notification LED? When did that happen?

Yes, that's what I meant as well :)

The notification LED on the front side had been in the specs on Jolla's website for a while, but it's disappeared with the new website few days ago.

I wouldn't notice if it wasn't for your comment.

Kabouik 2013-11-17 22:52

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

I don't think they dropped it though, if I recall correctly led notifications had been confirmed after the prototype evolved to the final Jolla. Am I right?

DeeGee 2013-11-17 22:55

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

I asked where the notification LED is on IRC while back and it should be somewhere in (frontside) bottom middle.

They said that the CEO has shown it to media/reporters on some occasion, but that video hasn't surfaced for some reason. Unless they have removed the LED after that? (I asked ~1 month ago)

[edit] Only thing that might be the led position is the dark "slot" on these two pictures, but I can't see anything like that in the newer pictures/renders. It is quite visible on the Aloe pic, but almost invisible on the PoppyRed one.

The problem is the ugliness of it. If in a dark room, you can see that there is back light on the whole screen as without it there is no LPS. So even if you have it on charge, you still see the phone getting hot and the back light distracting you hence leading to peek mode being a better alternative which is kinda self defeating...

Dont worry, http://jolla.com/media/images/Jolla_PoppyRed.jpg
http://jolla.com/media/images/Jolla_PoppyRed.jpg
dark slot in bottom middle area is the location of the rgb led.

PS. Increase contrast in you monitor if you dont see it :)

i see no led in that image. Would be cool id sonwone could ask JJolla. Its nor visible in image or spec at jolla.com ATM.

you cant argue fact. We just need confirmation that they forgot it when updated spec.

You just got the confirmation in that posting by Rainisto, what else do you need??
If he says there is a led there it exists.

what? I did? Looking at a n9 browser and all i can see is blackness :D

ok, then jolla should really update spes with RGB notification LED as before. Its a killer featurr nowdays

EDIT; dif no he worked at jolla. Maybe he can update spec

rainisto 2013-11-18 07:43

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

Well spec page doesn't mention GPIO pin either, so most likely they have just simplified the page to match terms that general public understands. And have left the niche features out of the page so people don't get flooded with terms that they don't understand.

I'll bet that in few feeks someone will dismantle the beast and you'll get all the exact hw details that you want. :-)

Dave999 2013-11-18 07:49

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

well, spec is spec it shall show what it is. Why not add some easier like notification light. Either way its your spec do do as you please. Im just happy its there. Thank you.

Hey, since we're talking specs that are not mentioned, can someone please confirm if Jolla phone has FM radio receiver? Sorry if it has been mentioned before but the search tool ignores "fm" keyword in the search query..

PS. New here, hi to all!

FM receiver, yes. No word on a transmitter though.

I'm more interested in FM receiver, thanks!

I'm patiently waiting for a mail from Jolla regarding my preorder... :)

DeeGee 2013-11-18 08:38

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

Where have they said anything about FM-receiver? The situation might be that like on N9 we have the hardware, but no software (Many Snapdragon chips come with FM-receiver support).

[edit] And if my memory serves me correctly, even on N9, the radio receiver chip luckily was wired to the 3.5mm plug so that it could use the headphone wire as antenna. FM-receiver without antenna is useless.

rainisto 2013-11-18 09:15

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

jolla.com has official specs, so you can check details there. If something is not listed there then it either doesn't exist or details have not been released yet.

But surely someone will most likely dismantle the device in a few weeks for deeper hw analyzis.

I was wondering, chaps, what if we compare our order ids and try to figure out the actual queue. Just to build up the expectation, I guess.
Here is mine: c19b221162c7, ordered 100 eur option on 20th May around 16:00 Madrid time. Any suggestions?

Re: #JollaLoveDay - 20th May - device announcement

Now here's a funny thing for you all.

I have no idea where you get those order ID things, since I never got a mail with that kind of information. :(

I did order fairly early, around 12:02 Helsinki time. I got my account, paid and received a confirmation of the dough I spilled on the device but never got any other mail after that until the invitation last week.

So I cannot tellyou what's my Order ID, sorry.
