250 is an underestimation, guess 1500 would be a better approx.

I have pretty hard time believing that you could name 1500 useful applications for any given mobile platform. Not even, if you count games (and I don't really count games as useful applications...)

250 is about the max anyone can imagine... IMHO.

Totally true. N900 proved it. I ask Jolla just one thing: less interest in social crap and more dedication to things that really matter.

In light of the recent security leaks, an easy way to send/receive encrypted emails and messages would be nice.

Besides, I'd like to see someone who can install 1500 applications on their personal device and remember the 1500 names :)

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

The only app I can think of that's missing in Post #1 is an Audible app.
I don't have an Audible subscription yet, but i would if there was a client for N900... ;-)

Other than that, the list is more than complete for me.

Most important for me (in more or less random order):
- good offline navigation
- good office suite
- spotify client incl. offline playlists (Meespot seems to do...)
- dictionary for several languages
- usable linux shell with functionalities like ssh server and client,... (I hope this is really part of the basic OS)
- music player which supports gapless playback
- fahrplan or similar app for public transport schedule

+1 for Audible app

but i'm afraid, this will not happen, as they stated clearly, they will not support DRM.
Workaround could be the Android-App, but i wonder if Android-apps, relying on DRM will work on a device, that does not support DRM? Will it work in the virtual environment?

There was a similar workaround for N900, using Garnet VM.

I would add to the list:
*Waze (A current one because the port is a little outdated with new features)
*Kall (Be able to control how long a call can last and re-dial after this time has expired)
*Firestarter (Amazon Kloud Reader)
*Converter (currency, weight, temperature,length, etc)
*Track & protect
*Wifi Management (be able to see the passwords of the added wifi's)
*Countdown
*PC Remote control (via BT or wifi)
*Tips (Tip calculator)
*PinIt! Lists (Todo, shopping, etc list)

Ok, about the third one Firestarter I've been pointed out that it has changed the name to Erudite and here is the link to the developer page http://meego.mikeasoft.com/erudite/ so it would be nice to see this one ported to Sailfish.

From the dev, Elleo, in this very thread:

That's called Erudite now, and I probably won't be porting it if the official Amazon Kindle Android app runs acceptably on Sailfish, at the moment it's a bit unclear whether I'll even still be able to continue distributing it for MeeGo and Symbian much longer.

250 useful apps, 250 games, 2250 clones of those games, 250 fart apps. That's about 3000. The rest are "apps" to access a specific website.

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

Since you asked:

cleven - from maemo5

fennec web browser

hamster file manager(or another powerful, phone specific file manager)

flashlight app for the camera flash

wifi-eye

cut down version of libre-office, made to work with the touch screen.

leafpad

htop, or ideally a good GUI proccess manager

QR barcode scanner

good calculator.

fileroller, or a good archive/compressed archive management tool.(intergration into file manager would be nice)

fMMS(Fral's MMS, asked for by name)

good espeak font end.

sysinfo widget.(like n900)

brightness control widget(like the n900)

IP address + interface widget(like the n900)

good audio subsystem and per interface control pannel. Ability to play sounds into the phone subsystem and record them back.

FTP client, like n900ftp, that also does sftp

sharing back ends for gallery2, and other Open/Free protocol based options(use any server)

weather/app widget

wireshark

Caller ID faker/hider widget(like the n900)

Raw GSM information app, like NetMon

keypassX with a better port of the UI

TrueCrypt, and truecrypt integration. ecryptfs and UI intergration.

metadata scubbers, a good camera app, that can be optionally set up to not record metadata. I think a port of MAT is in order
https://mat.boum.org/

GPSJini from the n900, or another good app for raw GPS information

Google Maps

USB host mode

Detailed battery information and calibration app

PDF+ mobile docs reader

widget to switch off the wifi, and all radios, if not built into the OS, like the n900 has.

theme customizer

TOR + I2P + proxy switcher + vidalia

xchat or other IRC client, mabey some UI smoothing for phones. include things ssl, sasl, and script support like modern IRC clients.

GUI disk and file systemt tools.

plugin interface for networking, to add wired connections, proxies, and VPNs, like NetworkManager on the desktop.

also pluggins for most common VPNs, wired ethernet(via usb), and iodine(DNS tunnelling)

some raw NFC and raw bluetooth hacking/experimenation apps.

voice dialing.

secure delete, with UI support for wiping microSD cards securely, and file manager support for wiping files securely

Dosbox

bleachbit

========COMMAND LINE + INTERNALS==============
terminal emulator + bash + GNU userland.https://mat.boum.org/

command line back end for phone functions, so they can be scripted.

dsniff, aircrack-ng, nmap, tcptraceroute, netcat, hping, telnet, ftp, socat, tar, gzip, compression utills, wget, openssh, ethtool, iptraf, monit, snort, etc...

most common command line apps, for servers

torsocks

sshd + fail2ban + iptables + rkhunter + unhide

support for ext*, btrfs, squashfs, aufs, and the whole range of typical linux filesystems, along with cfdisk, parted, and typical filesystem tools.

crypto modules for the kernel included.(AES,TWOFISH,SERPENT, SHA-whatever)

typical desktop kernel modules

boot menu

=========Comms=============
Conversations and Contacts-
I want the same instant message and email integration from maemo5. I also want OTR and GPG integration with a GOOD, easy to use key manager. I also want the full range of libpurple protocols as a plugin too.

I also want VOIP call integration as well, like the n900 had with skype, but with any voice protocol in libpurple or added on.

USB sync to the desktop - I know its not on the phone, but could you guys write a plugin for using a USB cable to sync to various PIM(personal information management) solutions on the linux desktop:

Evolution and Thunderbird specificly.

This should not be hard. I think something like .ispersonalinformation similar to .ismediaplayer with Banshee/Rythmbox could make this easy to sync information on any removable filesystem without the need for any application specific funk.

I also want to be able to sync GPG and OTR keys from my desktop, to my phone, via a usb cable....Easily.

=========Multi-media==================
This is real big, my n900 also doubles as my mp3 player. my jolla phone, will, double as my mp3 player.

multi use media player that works like an mp3 player, and runs in the background if asked too. It would be GREAT if it had gstreamer support, and played any format gstreamer had.

Also adding support for FM radio into the media player would be awesome. Good support that captures tags, and stores presets, and can jump to a station based on keyboard input.

I wouild also like hardware support for ogg, opus, flac, and mp3, to cut down battery use, for all day music player

it also needs to sync to rhythmbox and banshee like it does on the n900.

edit:

forgot shazzaam, that AR app with all the attractions in it.

You nailed it there, dude. My gal has iphone for 3 weeks now and it is already boring, at least for me. She is happy with that crap. The first thing I had to do is to help her transfer the contacts to that stupid "smartphone". You won't believe, but there were 76 !!! "apps" to sort out the mess it created after the sync. I wonder, if there are 76 crapps for doing things my Nokia N73 did effortless 7 years ago, so people (i mean devs) are aware how shitty ios is. But the hordes of brainless isheep (my gal included) won't give a fcuk about that. After that it was time for selecting a song as a ringtone, and there came 38 crapps for converting an MP3 to ringtone compatible 40-second excerpt. OMG, what a rubbish!!!!

social applications, fb, twitter, whatsapp, snapchat for fun

train times but I could always bookmark a browser page.

some sort of picture vault.

subway card

book reader

twitchtv since flash is dying.

Will jolla update the OS or abandon it like nokia did?

Hahaha isn't that just sad? I feel awful you had to experience that. I recommended my girl buy a N8 and it does everything she wants and needs it too. She loves the camera on that thing.

Would like to see a framework released with Sailfish OS that allows it to work with smar****ches:
- Metawatch
- Nike Fuel+
- Pebble
- etc

Not necesarly an app, but perhaps as an extension to the Accounts function where the devices can authenticate to a secure website through the mobile/SailfishOS enabler as the proxy. Things like goals and such would only be shown on the product's website; but maybe something like a "data uploaded, metrics sent were 'x' " message would be what's seen on a active panel/notification.

JottaCloud hmm, seems to be an european company(Norway like Qt was). So I decided send a mail asking them if they will support Jolla because every european sw company should support Jolla! Same with Spotify! got damn!

Re: What Applications would you like to see on Sailfish Devices?

Harmattan's gui suffices, imo. What really sucks is that 24bps FLACs, of which I have some, are played in mono. Worse: the player is an energy hog. QuasarMX solves both problems. It amazes me how much difference it makes in energy consumption using a BT headset.

(Yeah I know, 24bpc flac over a lossy SBC-compressed bluetooth conneciton doesn't make sense. Well, transcoding while I've plenty space left makes less sense. I guess Jolla should support apt-x ;))
