Thanks mikecomputing. If sailfish is made available to run on Nexus 7 that would be fantastatic. Indeed, the Nexus 7 can be purchased for a little more than $200. A real bargain for a tablet running sailfish!

And I believe once the image has been released it will not be difficult to port to other Android devices with similar chipset. Really wish Sailfish can run on some high end hardware, Android OS is such a mess a waste of device power. :p

I am trying to install sailfish on my n9 from http://wiki.maemo.org/Sailfish but get stuck after Step 3 - Flash the OpenMode. The scary warning comes & reboot loop.

any help?

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

@Firminator maybe you just start reading instructions and do all steps correctly?
@pleasurebd download firmware again, compare file checksum.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

Hi,
I run Sailfish on my N9 as my main OS since few days now.

And I've faced the same issue twice: after 2 or 3 days, I'm not able to connect to my wifi network anymore. And I need to reboot the phone to get my connection back.

Anyone to confirm?

Yes wifi seems a fairly bit wonky. Disconnected at the least expected moment.

Not on mine, switching to flight mode and back, didn't help at all. Really need to reboot.

/sbin/ifconfig down wlan0
/sbin/ifconfig up wlan0
is helping for me :)

I mounted the volumes Nokia N9 and rootfs with my file manager and commanded the following in my working directory ~/Temp.

sudo cp zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix /media/rootfs/boot/

Then I extracted the files in ububoot package and moved the needed files to proper place.

tar xvf ubiboot_035_sailfishos.tar && sudo cp home/user/MyDocs/boot/ubiboot* /media/Nokia\ N9/boot/

is it possible to write a script or daemon that will monitor key presses and change the volume?
some info. install from sailfish terminal:
$ su (password)
# ssu ar mer-tools
# ssu ur
$ pkcon refresh
then
pkcon install alsa-utils
then run
alsamixer in terminal.

I am working on running Mer/Sailfish on an Android device.
What is your recommendation for partition layout of internal MMC?
Should I bother with initrd, or just go straight for pure kernel mounting rootfs partition directly?

Does anyone have a dump of partition layout of Jolla Phone?
How does your N9/N950 layout look?

use libhybris for android, its better.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but touch screen is far less sensitive in Sailfish than in Harmattan if not grounded either via the charger or by touching the plate on the back of the N9. (this also applies to UbiBoot and NitDroid)

I know that N9's touch screen isn't the best at all, but at least it stays usable in Harmattan even when it is not grounded correctly.

Is there any chance that this problem can be solved with some clever coding, or is the source of this problem too complex to solve it?

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

ask in nemomobile thread. nothing related to Sailfish.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

@just486 is your screen a replacement? I noticed that in replacement screens the ground contacts on the back are not sprung out and probably they don't touch the chassis properly. You might want to disassemble and bend the conatcts outwards. </ot>

Just486 2013-12-24 10:28

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

@qwazix
I have a fully original screen, it's never been replaced. Formerly I also bent the clips, anyways, because I also found them loose.
You dont't have similar issues with your sensitivity?

The bad thing that capacitive screens needs pretty good grounding and drivers (? or some kind of code) to work as intended.

So can anyone please tell me in which exact topic should I report my issue?

romu 2013-12-24 10:38

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

Strange because I don't feel the screen less responsive between the 2 OSes.

Well the screen (for me) has been a lot wonky. Scrolling isn't the best feeling in sailfish.

When you use ubiboot to launch Sailfish with a new kernel, just drop your kernel to /boot/ of your ALT_OS, modules to /lib/modules and make a new kernel menuline to your ubiboot.conf.
(it is all explained in the README and conf flle comments...)

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

Hi,

i have also attempted to use N9 running Sailfish as my primary phone for a couple of days now. Curently running the vgrade_r4 image.

Have had the following issues (in addition to those known --> https://github.com/romu70/sailfish-f...=N9&state=open):
* Cannot create backup. If i tap "create" on the new packup, just nothing happens.
* Cannot uninstall app. The 5 sec delay passes and nothing happens, app is still there.
* Cannot install MS Exchange support. Getting "problem with installing qmf-activesync-plugin". Is it known to be incompatible with the N9 port?

Sorry i'm quite new to mobile OS internals, but how can i see/enable more detailed error messages? Currently, nothing is added to any files under /var/log in any of these cases above.

I think logging to persistent logfiles under /var/log has been disabled due to the reason that flash does not like repeated small writes like to a logfile, it will use up the eraseblocks and eventually burn off your flash bit by bit.

There is a way to see logs, you need to use the "journalctl" command. (and you need to be root to see other than user logs)
"journalctl -f" lets you follow logging.

Personally I feel this procedure is not so good as having filesystem logs in some cases, for example if you have a spontaneous reboot of the device there will be no log of the events preceeding that :(
