Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

I tried to install Sailfish proper way (no warranty void message), but everytime I try so, it still is there!
Quote:

C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher>flasher -F n9\main.bin -F n9\emmc.bin --suppress-warranty-warning -f
It goes thru normally, but after when I install Openmode the warning is still there :(

The flasher option "--suppress-warranty-warning" has nothing to do with device open mode warning.

That option only suppresses the warning that flasher gives to you when you start it:
WARNING: This tool is intended for professional use only. Using it may result
in permanently damaging your device or losing the warranty.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

@valexi you need to erase CAL before flashing open kernel to remove warranty screen ;)

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

Is there any change that the bad outgoing sound from Sailfish phone - due to N9 port have learned! - can be improved in future OR is it same nearly unsolving issue as in NITDroid?

Looks like the enthusiasm for porting to the N9 has already fade away... :(

I feel like it's more that Jolla has not released any updates in the past few weeks, and so porting it to the N9 is not going go any further until they release something. There are lots of bugs that need to be addressed.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

There are lots of bugs related to nemo hw adaptation and unrelated to sailfish.
According to this post, maybe 1.0.2.5 will last version of sailfish seen on N9.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=92431

I'm no expert on this matter but judging by the above link I think it more up to the community than Jolla.

Also check the bug tracker for the N9/N950 port to see whats still missing from the current port and these are something that Jolla can't help with, it's mostly up to the community:

https://github.com/romu70/sailfish-for-other/issues

I don't know if there are still developers doing much porting and solving the issues. I really hope so as a N9 user but I haven't done any coding since 2005 and my unix skills are close to non-existent so...

This seems to be end for sailfish porting on N9, Also for many days there is no news on update as it was during early days of the thread,
Sad for me and other N9 users

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

I just installed this to my N9 and it is amazing!
I also modified wiki for some mistakes there, as I encountered them while installing...
Shame, if there wont be any active developers. I would like to see new life blown to my device.

I will try to use this for my main phone for couple of days and see how it goes.

Couple of questions:
I can't get root privileges, I did what had to do and removed root password in Harmattan. When i type in (Sailfish) terminal su and password blank, it says: "wrong password"

Other thing, I can't get store working yet. I will try it later. I used coderus'es ssu.ini with no luck.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

I have managed to install sailfish on my N9

Problems i have found:
- the store, accessing it is ok, but when trying to install an app, after clicking on install, it remains in a waiting state.
- i cannot install the charging .rpm workaround provided by coderus, but i receive the following error:
[root@localhost Downloads]# zypper install statefs-provider-bme-1.0.0-3.armv7hl.rpm
Repository named '_tmpRPMcache_' already exists. Please use another alias.

@coderus Thanks! Now it works!

@vasile123 You dont need the charging fix in r5.1

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

thank you, valexi

otherwise, for the apps installation from the store, you have the same behavior?
i don't see anything about this in this thread

another 2 problems, not seen in the list of bugs:
- videos are not played, just the sound of them;
- videoclips from youtube are not seen, just the loading gear is rotating.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

Hi,
Sad times for Sailfish on N9 it seems. Personaly, after having tried it for few days, I switched back to Harmattan which is, in my opinion, superior to SailfishOS, and more important, totally integrated with the N9 hardware.

From this Sailfish OS try, I've found how much I like the Amoled display and its ability to display notifications, this is not provided on the Jolla 1 and Sailfish.

I'll keep my N9 for its full offline navigation, but I'll also switch to Android.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

There are lots of problems with drivers on N9(50). One thing came to my mind. Can we simply copy some drivers from Harmattan and reuse them in Sailfish on N9(50). Jolla can't do it, but we, the owners can

/edit: And I have the same problem with authentification as vasile123. Store seems not to have added the credentials...
Zypper says:
Authentication required for 'https://store-repository.jolla.com/features/1.0.2.5/xt9/armv7hl/'

Code:

Retrieving repository 'xt9' metadata ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[|]
Authentication required for 'https://store-repository.jolla.com/features/1.0.2.5/xt9/armv7hl/'

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

I personally am holding out hope for the volume buttons on N9. I don't know enough about the input stack to write it myself, but it seems like it shouldn't be that hard to listen for a button press and then send a volume change signal over dbus.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

According to this Jolla message, the next Sailfish update won't run on the N9 if the work is not done within Nemo.

Almost the end of the story.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

Maybe this is the final push for 3.5 kernel to N9!

Or it is the burial for our device

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

@valexi lol, why no Sailfish updates means burial to N9? :D

Because nowadays, the only people who care about the N9 are really just people who use it. Nokia has dropped support, NitDroid has not released in a while, sailfish is going to drop the n9. The N9 is slowly being buried.

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

Since the Harmattan sources are available, isn't there anything that can be done with the kernel and the drivers?

anzx 2014-01-19 10:02

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

the best option for n9 is that we sign up on kickstarter and get the funds to buy full N9 patents and rights including store :D then we can make N9-01 community phone with Meego 2.0 OS :)

Well that was just a joke (sorry), it is impossible but it would be nice, cuz everyday when I look to my N9 I feel so bad because it's dying slowly and painful. :(

Akkumaru 2014-01-19 11:57

Since when did harmattan sources become available?

coderus 2014-01-19 12:01

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

harmattan sources? never. all opensource parts already published years ago.
drivers are not opensource.

vasile123 2014-01-19 19:00

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

I've just saw this: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=89755. but anyway, coderus knows better what's in there

coderus 2014-01-19 19:48

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

we're talking about different harmattan parts here.
most of middleware parts are opensource. also kernel is opensource. you can get it on sources dvd image.
and most of ui parts are closed, and you never get sources of them.

Porting Sailfish to N9 problem

I wanted to ask about sailfish instalation i did everything like in the tutorial (here) but in the 7 step where you have to decompres the sailfish in ome places it showed me error (something about lack of permisions, ofc i did everything with devel-su) i did everything with openmode kernel redid everything after first failure( i mean completely reflashed ) but still same proble i noticed in ubi log that it lacked file "bzimage" so i manuoly transported it there now it loads sailfish and frozes on black screen, any ideas ? (btw 1.0.2.5 r5.1 sailfish version)

Check if the file is named sailfish.tar.bz2 instead of sailfish.bz2

I made the same mistake. The .tar needs to be at the end of the file in windows (assuming you have file extensions hidden). If you do, it should read sailfish.tar in the windows explorer. On linux I believe it shows extensions by default, so it should look like sailfish.tar.bz2.

:)

The file is "sailfish.tar.bz2" and in windows it shows as winrar, i duoble checked it and tried decompresing diferent version same output.

The SailfishOS filesystem tarball includes all files in their correct location.
If you are missing something, like the kernel image (bzimage) and need to copy that off from somewhere else, then the odds are good that you also are missing other files, hence the problems.

But i think problem is in openmode kernel somehow it still doesnt give all permisions thats why most of tar extracts but but main piece cant. Everything went smoothly exept 7 step(sailfish installation).

I think there was some problem in the Harmattan version of tar when handling large gzipped files.
Have you tried gunzipping the filesystem image on an external computer, and then only extracting the uncompressed tar archive in your device?

Yes i tried thats how i managed to insert bzimage ,but in computer it doesnt extract full because it has to compile some of the files so it throws errors...

Re: Porting Sailfish to N9 (or other)

I did the decompressing in Harmattan PR1.3 and it went smoothly.

Also notice that Sailfish doesn't have bootlogo and it takes some time to load...

Managed to make it work and as always its was stupid mistake(after moslo kernel i formated partinion ...) everything works now...
Stil thaks for effort ;)
