It should be more expensive. These aren't made in millions of units by exploited chinese teen girls, who give up their future and education for few pennies while working in a sweat shop.

It's just a dutch dude (and apparently some help from a finnish geek) bleeding his free time to get a 75 units of these done.

If you really think that dirkvl's personal time and effort is worth nothing of your money, you can just grab the dropbox files that he kindly released and build the device yourself.
That should make you understand that *prototype* manufacturing is neither simple nor necessarily cheap.

Re: [WIP] Producing Qwerty OtherHalf --order counter: 67/75

Personally I think 100 euros is cheap price. I might pay it from a mass produced qwerty too. It just is such on add on that I haven't had with Jolla and dirkvl work was the final trigger that I even bought Jolla. Otherwise I could have been returned back to Desire Z.

first 16 are on their way!

for these people:
please remember that this is not a polished product and can -and will- have imperfections! also, the software is not yet done and everything will be a bit hackish at first.

if there are any problems with them, please email me, then i can more easily help with fixing the problem then when we fill this whole thread with issues :)

also, the shipping was a little cheaper than anticipated. if you want the difference back, send me a message. otherwise it is converted to a crazy-otherhalf voucher for future projects!

also, i am exhausted. this whole keyboard making is a bit more work than anticipated. i am learning a lot though, so that is always good!

ow, last thing! a very few people -like 3 or so- have a very limited edition keypad! see if you can spot the difference!

I totally get that the keyboard will be hacky, and I knew that from the beginning, but I don't really see the point in keeping discussions on how to improve it or fix bugs (or discuss features yet to implement) off the thread, in private (emails) discussions. We all know it will be buggy and that there is still a lot of work, but wouldn't it be better if we could all discuss the problems here rather than every one of us sending you the same emails for the same issues, instead of just coming here checking whether it was already discussed, investigated, acknowledged for future improvement, and perhaps even solved?

Honestly, I don't even know how you managed to push this project so far! Congratulations, you really made a great work (together with Kimmoli of course) and we're all grateful for that awesome work.

this is the preferred way for me. if there are issues that keep coming back i will post them here as a FAQ or whatever. i don't like this whole thread to be filled up with troubleshooting basic stuff.

Congratulations to your first shipped own product! *fireworks*

It's great to see, that you really did not stop somewhere in the middle of the development. And no I don't want the difference back, even if there is no following "crazy-otherhalf", but yes, showing us a crazy OTH later would be nice of course :D

You can consider my extra shipping payment as extra motivation to continue doing great stuff like this!

The other issue, how to report errors, bugs and misfeatures along with comments, why not make a FAQ as a maemo.org wiki-page? That way, you get all questions collected in a simple uncluttered way (compared to TMO), and the community might even answer some of the questions for you! :-)

(pre-)ordering is closed now! will probably take a while to make the next 60, after that i will count my remaining parts and see if i can make some more

also, put the address to my dropbox in my signature to make things easier. also put a 3d file of a generic otherhalf in there, that is a bit more printer-friendly than the file provided by jolla (made by kimmo for toholed and then made some changes)

Binary and current config files available here: https://github.com/kimmoli/tohkbd

This version is the one hacked for MWC, with little commandline-practice you will get it up and running (dirkvl did also so it is not so difficult :p ). I will release sourcecodes too when i get it cleaned up.

This registers to d-bus, needs root rights etc. nasty things but most of this will be removed.

When source released, fork fork fork

Hey, my qwerty toh arrived. Fits tightly on my Jolla, tighter than my other tohs. Thats probably good, since this is bulkier.

Jolla doesnt recognize it ( to be expected, I guess) since there is no sw. It just says something "this toh doesnt work".

It feels a bit edgy, I wonder if I could use sand paper to round the corners, finish the 3d-print?

oh good, it fits. my phone is a bit banged up from fitting 100 non-fitting parts.

next batch will be slightly larger (0.05%)

yes, the software is not at a point that we have a working application in the store, so the nfc is not yet linked.

My qwerty toh arrived today as well and was able to get it to work on my device using Kimmoli's driver (and also posted a pull request to map search key to ctrl.)

Unfortunately it looks like some of the keys on my keyboard don't work at all, my keyboard's T, P, X, C and down arrow keys don't seem to report anything at all to the driver, but I haven't verified whether this is a problem in the keyboard or in the driver. The driver also currently drops key presses if they occur too fast, I'll try to fix it this weekend unless someone else gets to it before me :)

okay, we will see how it goes. could be some glue between the pcb and dome-sheet, or it is not properly aligned. or it works after pushing it 1000 times ;)

let me know and otherwise i will make you a replacement pcb, if you have a utility knife you will probably be able to replace it yourself

Had some spare minutes and got the software working and have a white led blinking :)

Note: a short "howto" in one document where the files have to be placed + that you have to edit the service-file would be good, but of course later when there will be a package it will be no problem.

I have the same problem, that not all keys are working and some only behave a bit strange, but the latter should be software I think.

Not working (only short test with normal keys), seem to be only keys in the middle (like a cross): t-fgh-v

http://www.imgbox.de/users/public/images/OQoObb6p21.png

The "?"-Key for example does nothing if you press it (while typing sms) but if holding alt + ? it does somthing, it prints both at the same time: ?)

Alt + d prints: ?#

Keyboad not working for unlocking the phone.

To see the keyboard log (for example to test if the keys are working) you can now see the output in systemd journal.

journalctl _SYSTEMD_UNIT=tohkbd.service -f

Note that all key presses are logged so take that into account when entering passwords, etc if you also plan to post your device's logfiles to the internet.

my keyboard's P and down-arrow keys started working yesterday evening, but they require quite a bit stronger presses than other keys. T, X and C still report nothing.

My next update to the driver will be (conditionally?) disabling the blinking led, it's just too bright :)

I had to add that my "f"-key isn't working, too.
So now it looks like a "cross" of key in the middle that are not working.

I will try to watch the log mentioned by oskari (thanks!) when I have time.

In the servicefile I modified the path to the binary, as I placed it to

/usr/sbin/tohkbd

So I changed this line:
Code:

ExecStart=/home/nemo/test/tohkbd
and started with:
Code:

devel-su; systemctl start tohkbd.service

It's nice to have some feedback, so there are I think many times when a feedback would be nice to have, like light up (one time or short squence) when keyboard gets active and is ready to get input, or when keyboard closed blink again to show that maybe dameon sent to sleep ... only thinking.

Right now it still is blinking when closed.

kimmoli 2014-03-21 11:34

Re: Producing Qwerty OtherHalf --order counter: 75/75 --ordering closed

led is bright  (i agree) but it is blinking just for debug reasons...

Ah "?" is not yet fixed (it was 9 and 0)

Updated readme a bit: https://github.com/kimmoli/tohkbd/blob/master/README.md

The most annoying thing is this issue with shift and other combinations. Noticed it also appears when you hit the "edge" with arrow-keys.

It waits update from Jolla or Qt or somewhere (same happens within emulator afaik)

If you see a SW BUG, or VERY GOOD SW improvement, file it directly to my github --> Create new issue

Almost had a heart attack, msg from mom: package arrived today, in damaged state. (follow up: stamp says so, hoping the envelope is torn or something, they don't test OHs in the PO I hope for workability, or maybe they forgot the drivers from kimmo, or was this special version with a spliff???) will know more in an hour or so... oO

edit: envelope was torn, they put a sticky on it with the stamp, fits nicely so should be fine, pheeeew, will check the keys once I get back home and get the sw running

Works!!! No problems with any of the keys afaict so far. W00000000000000000000t!!!!!!!!
