GPS Navigation with N900

I have several smart phones. I switch around on occasion. I am using my N900 right now. I try to use the GPS as I do on my other phones but my N900 GPS tells me where I am now but I can't get it to map out a route to follow someplace. I used the normal prompts and menus but no matter what I do, it just tells me where I currently am. The satellite follows and tells me exactly where I am and show the driving route---but I would like use it as a GPS and not just following me now.
Any suggestions please???
Thanks,
Bobby

Re: GPS Navigation with N900

Try the modRana app. It offers turn-by-turn navigation, voice output, etc. It is the only N900 navigation app that is still being updated, I think. It's a great app, and it's Python, so it's easy to modify if you wish to. It will also mass download map tiles for offline navigation. Highly recommended.

Thanks Ken. I downloaded it. It looks good. I will give it a go.

It would be great if the MMS app would be that easy to figure out. I haven't gotten it to work yet. I

Thanks,
Bobby

I also recommend Modrana. It's a sharp piece of work.

Isn't that the same as the first one you mentioned????

Re: GPS Navigation with N900

Yes. Modrana is the choice of times.

fMMS status is quite unpredictable.
For me it stopped working on receiving MMS, even I can send without problems for different providers.
There are conspiracy theories that Nokia gave out a list of IMEIs to let providers block all N900 MMS functionality. I do not know ...
But worth a forum search (or maybe a new thread, for Neo900?).

Re: GPS Navigation with N900

Thanks Peter. I appreciate the help. While we are at it, do you or Ken know of any ebook readers other then the usual ones that most of us know about. I would like one that would read Kindle books but I don't think that is out there for Maemo.

Its a great device, the N900.

Thanks,
Bobby

For ModRana offline routing you will find this useful

http://wiki.maemo.org/ModRana_offline_routing_guide

AFAIK the Kindle file formats are proprietary (.azw and .kf8) but I imagine you can convert them to the open epub version with software like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calibre_%28software%29

Re: GPS Navigation with N900

There is also Navit which, judging by the traffic on this thread, looks also somewhat active, but at least I have never managed to work out how to use it. In fact, I have just removed it again after yet another failed attempt to give it a chance. In short, Modrana seems to be the only viable option left.

Well, Sygic MM10 (hacked to work with Android maps) works for me pretty much just fine

What hack?

I'm using modrana. But also old sygic.

Re: GPS Navigation with N900

You need to have MM10 already installed, there is a hacked "drive" binary along with Europe.mlm floating over the inet which allows *ANY* MM10 map to be used(Android maps included).

I can upload it on request via PM, put please don't flood my PM inbox :)

NOTE:
I don't like pirating software, I paid for MM10 and Sygic promised to support MM10 on Maemo and after this didn't happen while they continue to spam my e-mail with offers related to their great SW running on Android, they've lost all my respect ;)

Don't know about the other countries, but for Bulgaria it makes all the difference (17MB vs 2MB)

Wow thanks everyone for all the information from all around the world. I have lots to thinking and looking to do.

What a great and helpful forum.

I really like my N900 and it would have been nice if Nokia would have made more apps for it. I think its a great form and it a shame they didn't continue to improve it.

Thanks,
Bobby

You should not forget Marble. It can do offline routing (wtth Monav daemon) and also has voice guidance.

Re: GPS Navigation with N900

Is MM10 still receiving map updates?
I could use V8.24 maps from an Android/Symbian/WinMobile setup, but those maps where dated 2011-3.
I doubt non MM10 maps can be used...

navit in maemo repos is not working. you have to use the version in bokomoko repos http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Maemo

then you can install the packages tapping on C button of Faster App Manager (Category filter-> all packages and type navit to find the packages) packages to be installed are: navit and libfreetype6-navit

after this you need to dowload map from http://maps5.navit-project.org/ and configure xml files

waze works very well for me (may depend on your location -- I've used it without issue both in Israel and in the USA). See the t.m.o thread about waze.

Re: GPS Navigation with N900

Wowwwww I ask about GPS and I got tons of them to look at. I have looked at Modrana and it looks good. The voice sounds like a computer voice---but I could get used to that. I will try the others and see how they work.

Its funny because I have been to the app menu tons of times and didn't realize they were GPS apps.

Thanks,
Bobby

It does because it is :) Computer generated voice by espeak. Try this in the terminal:
Code:

espeak "A quick brown fox jumped over a lazy dog."
