I'm really looking forward to have this bl**dy Wifi problems fixed once and for all.

Hi, I don't have any 'wifi' problems currently. Did you generate a bug report for it ?

I actually thought that the smooth implementation of wifi roaming and bluetooth connectivity is one of the best features of the N800. Getting online is amazingl easy. One slight comment - I tether to a Nokia E61i, and when trying to connect using its 3G, i always have to close all internet connected apps on the phone (web, fring) before the N800 will tether, instead of it just climbing onto the existing connection. Is this a bug in either device or a shortcoming of the protocol?

If it's my router, why did this problem occur when i upgraded the firmware and why doesn't mave my PC, Mac and Wii have this problem?

Ah, and yes, a bug is filed. I'm talking about the famous wlan_sleep_timeout bug. I'm just wondering how long it takes before this problem is definitively solved.

What is the bug number? what is the problem exactly? i may be having the same issue, but i think it's due to using my wife's ibook as our router... If I try to stream music, use google talk or skype it drops about every five minutes. I do not get this happening on my thinkpad which is also routed through the ibook.

In about 5 days I'll have a real router, so I am hoping that will end the problem.

So you didn't search in here and find the correct key to change to set it back to the settings used in the last firmware?

I know it's in here. I opened the topic AND the bug myself... It's just that ONLY changing the values in gconf doesn't solve the problem. Strangely enough, hiding the SSID does help...

But the problem is besides the point, the problem has been discussed over and over again and the bug is there including the votes (if they didn't change the product in the bugtracker and removed all the votes like on many other bugs at the moment...

My question was, and look at the title of the thread, when the next firmware is coming and if the problem gets fixed so i can be accessing the internet again as if i was on the previous firmware. This Wifi problem spoils 90% of the fun with the N800 for me.

Woke up early this AM, figured I'd toss in with a 'no wifi problems here.' I'm loving my N800, which seems to connect quickly to available wifi and hangs right in there with excellent stability.

I don't know, but if all the forum member with no Wifi problems will be replying to this thread, then this thread is going to be LOOOONG.

But does anybody know when the next firmware release is coming and if this problem will be fixed?

That problem affects only a very minor number of wireless routers, and if I've understood the cause of it correctly it can even be argued that the problem is really with the router. If it were me I would simply ditch the router and get another one. They're cheap as cheese these days. Anyway, that's my personal opinion which you may choose to disagree with, of course.

Edit: As to dates.. it can be said with 100% certainty that nobody (outside of Nokia) can possibly know any release date, as this is simply something that Nokia doesn't disclose. Nothing special with that, it's common practice among vendors and in any case how it was for all the previous firmware updates, so I would be surprised if that suddenly changed.

Well... I have a good idea when it's coming Ton... but unfortunately I'm not the one to give that date out. Neither, for that matter, would any other poster here be unless it was Qgil or someone similar. You could always pose the question in maemo channels... but based on past experience I doubt there will be a date provided.

I know a date is much to ask (but i'm still asking), but is this going to be months, weeks, this year even? I don't really want to buy a new router because Nokia decided that of all the devices i have, their device needs to push the limits over the limit. :cool:

Unless Nokia can provide me with a list of certified AP's to work with the N800...

textrat could you think of what changes the new firmware will have when it ultimately comes. I am just asking you to "think" just like a normal tablet user..... irrespective of what you already now!!!

Hoo boy. There are definitely a few nice things for the normal user, but nothing revolutionary so much as evolutionary. Again (and even moreso than last time), developers will reap a big benefit. I'm also expecting the usual bug fixes and performance enhancements. Best thing this community could do along those lines is keep posting and voting on Bugzilla! You don't have a lot of time! :p

I'd like to divulge more, but I'm afraid they might take my testing privileges away... then how could I report bugs and offer suggestions as I did this morning? :D

If, say, a firmware release was tied to the release of new hardware, I'd be risking more than testing privileges if I gave a date... :eek: :D

Hey, here's an idea: If it's that risky to give details away, why not just keep schtum alltogether?

I mean, I'm not all over the interwebs, going: "You know, I'm not saying that we've had secret contacts with an extra-terrestrial civilisation for five years now, because if I did, I'd so lose all my Dungeons&Dragons playing privileges with Chtrarr'k. No don't ask my anything more specific, because I can't tell you anything."

Karel, if you recall, I once asked the community at large which way they would prefer that game be played. Most respondents said they actually enjoyed the teasers (note lack of troublemaking details). You yourself are fond of a less-regulated forum, wherein participants can choose to ignore posts in which they have no interest.

So what you're saying is that the next firmware release will coincide with a new Internet Tablet being released?
Probably the Wi-Max-enabled N800 for Sprint we've been hearing about lately.
Of course they'd have to release a new firmware since they would need to roll-up Wi-Max modules/capability for the new N800. One would hope that they would include bugfixes as found by us here as well as a new-and-improved kernel that supports faster SDHC speeds <cough>users-done-it-already<cough> that they seem to have ignored for the past two firmware releases.
The really phucked-up thing is Nokia's apparant lack of US advertising capabilities, so it will be all on Sprint to advertise the new N800 with the new firmware.
Seriously Nokia, spend the dough and hire a US-based ad agency.

Remember that Ari promised firmware platforming after the rough 770-to-N800 transition. Heck, that just makes sense for the company anyway, lowering development time and costs.

Lack of ANY type of real advertising on ANY of their products in the US versus what I've seen in Europe.
Sorry, but if Nokia is phucking-up the basic things with their big ticket items (cell phones) I don't expect them to not screw up their smaller ticket items (Internet Tablets).
Love the N800 and my N95, I just don't trust Nokia anymore. It looks like they're fragmenting themselves into a million pieces (Ovi, ITs, cell phones, strange accessories, music store, N-Gage gaming platform, different phone OS, etc).
I honestly don't think the Internet Tablet team within Nokia is getting enough INTERNAL support from within Nokia itself. Which is a shame when you consider the excellent EXTERNAL support they receive from the users here and generally "good" hardware reviews.
The stupid TAR and DPKG "breaks" they made in v4 better be fixed in the next firmware release as well as the faster SDHC kernel that's already been produced by a user in here.

I'm not sure I follow your examples.

There was no US carrier for the N95, so how is it just a US phone? I know many Europeans using them. Granted, the US was a key target market, but without a carrier to subsidize it, what sense did it make to launch it here? None, actually. Launches tend to be directed by carriers in the US. Nokia is still revising its approach to the US to take the carrier reality into account (we had tried unsuccessfully to go around them for a few years).

An iPhone clone makes sense, too. There will be MANY, not just produced by Nokia. Eventually first-to-market won't be as important as SUSTAINED-market-- where Nokia has the historical advantage. It remains to be seen if Apple's small, brief (but exciting) foray into phones can be sustained.

Granted Nokia's US advertising sucks, and has sucked for years. Every US employee in Nokia agrees I'll bet. It's just sooo hard to get corporate to understand...

I think I can wait for the next Internet Tablet hardware to be revealed. In the mean time, I'm thinking real hard on spending some big bucks on one of the new Nseries phones. However, if given enough insider info to hold back my "spending hand" a bit longer, I'd greatly appreciate it very much.
