2014 - Updating N900

Hello,

I have received an N900 recently. Looks new, works great, but has outdated software. And yes, I've read the guide, it doesn't help me at all.

My N900 has PR1.2, I want to update it to PR1.3 because most apps don't install. I am unable to update it OTA since there is no notification in application manager for system update, and anyway I would prefer a clean install.

I use Win7 x64 and would prefer to re-flash firmware using Nokia Software Updater (since the guide states it's possible). However, there are no working links in the guide, nor any instructions for this method.

So I ask you to kindly provide me (and all other new users of N900) with a SIMPLE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE and WORKING LINKS to required programs and the firmware itself.

Yours sincerely

AFAIK the only way to get images is illegal since tablet-dev is down. You can find image on torrent sites or some other sites, the instructions are still valid.
search for RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM

you also should pound Nokia support (doesn't matter that your device is second-hand), so they would reconsider putting tablet-dev down. they've just made obtaining legal copies of reflashable images for you device impossible.

Here is a txt file with link to the zip archive containing global firmware and the vanilla emmc image to download via dropbox.

.....considering that publicizing links (for ...now illegally obtained software) is just asking for the link to get immediately shut down...and who knows what else...Try enabling private messaging...you may actually get answers best left out of the public forum

You only can pm if you have more than 10 forum posts. That prevents against spammers.

You might consider starting a fresh new thread with the following information attached from X-Terminal
Code:

df
mount
free
ls -al /var/cache/apt
sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get install -f

The first commands check the different partitions for free space. the later check the package management for error messages.

Re: 2014 - Easy step-by-step guide on updating from PR1.2 to PR1.3 with working links

Looks okay apart from the missing MyDocs partition. Might be corrupted and therefore not mounted at boot. Please try to check the file system
Code:

sudo gainroot
fsck -af /dev/mmcblk0p1
fsck -af /dev/mmcblk0p1

Yes twice!
If no errors are put out, reboot. Else, please, post the error messages here.

Re: 2014 - Easy step-by-step guide on updating from PR1.2 to PR1.3 with working links

You want /dev/mmcblk0p1 (that's a number at the end), instead of /dev/mmcblk0pl.

Re: 2014 - Easy step-by-step guide on updating from PR1.2 to PR1.3 with working links

Not solved! Please try instead
Code:

sudo gainroot
umount /dev/mmcblk0p1

Might put out an error, if the device is not mounted, ignore it. Then
Code:

fsck -aw /dev/mmcblk0p1
for a couple of times until the output of the command is clean.

Re: 2014 - Easy step-by-step guide on updating from PR1.2 to PR1.3 with working links

Hm not sure.
Did you reboot? If yes try to get this output again for the free space
Code:

df
mount
free
ls -al /var/cache/apt

Re: 2014 - Easy step-by-step guide on updating from PR1.2 to PR1.3 with working links

To have much more space for temporary download, please continue
Code:

mkdir -p /opt/var/cache/
cp -avx /var/cache/apt/ /opt/var/cache/
rm -rf /var/cache/apt
ln -s /opt/var/cache/apt /var/cache/apt

This moves the directory for the package management from rootfs to the larger optfs partition. This should give you space to update.

For the MyDocs partition please try Please try to mount the MyDocs partition manually
Code:

sudo gainroot
mount -o rw,noauto,nodev,exec,nosuid,noatime,nodiratime,utf8,uid=29999,shortname=mixed,dmask=000,fmask=0000,rodir /home/user/MyDocs

From mount to MyDocs is one command spreading for three lines.

Skip this option
Code:

cp -a  /var/cache/apt/ /opt/var/cache/
I wonder if i ever get it that maemo's cp cpmmand has no -x option, sighhh!

Re: 2014 - Updating chinese 'new' N900

michaaa62, I have performed the first part and successfully updated libqt4-core. The phone worked at first, but I got errors pretty soon after, so I restarted it and now it seems it is in infinite boot cycle.

As far as I understand, now I should:
1. Install flasher-3.5
2. Follow these steps to get it working on 64bit Win7.
3. Run flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, if my battery is not full (but as far as I remember over 50%), should I do it?

Re: 2014 - Updating N900

Without -R if you'll flash vanilla too

I have flashed rootfs successfully, and my N900 is alive and kicking.

Re: 2014 - Updating N900

Doesn't strike me as a broken phone, video playback without overclocking is tough on the little old thing... :-) mplayer has many different switches and features, you need to websearch to figure it all out. If you fiddle around a bit with that, you can often get a passable video playback (I even used to live stream Star Trek from my home machine over sshfs and 3G with reasonable results).

Also, try installing a CPU monitoring app like htop or conky and check that you don't have anything eating all your CPU cycles in the background (a bit less than 10% CPU is normal just to keep the screen updated with the output from conky or htop, depending on what monitoring app you use).

stefanmohl 2014-02-17 20:16

Re: 2014 - Updating N900

Not sure, I would be very surprised if mplayer can't do it. I never really used kmplayer, I simply ran mplayer from command line.

You might want to start a new thread about video playback, to keep the topic clean, but don't forget to search the forums properly first! People here are really happy to help others out, but only if the asker is prepared to put in some work themselves too (by checking that the answer isn't already answered first).

However, I still don't know how to change audio streams. It's a disaster, since most videos I download have at least 2 audio streams, and the preffered-for-me English comes second.

Did you try to create the ~/.mplayer/config file with content:

alang="en"

Erm, yes. It is preinstalled (if you mean the application).
Or yes, you need OVI/Nokia Suite (latest version is okay) to download the maps to your device (if you mean the map data).
In latter case just search the forum and there is lot of info.

--edit
I really do not know how M$ will handle such map data download requests ...

It is already installed (unless you've done something really stupid, that is). It's the green icon that looks like a compass and has "Maps" written under it :)

Oh, you mean the maps themselves? I have not yet found any other way than through PC Suite. The Maps application downloads maps around your current location but as far as I know, PC Suite is the only way to batch download whole countries.

Make sure you start the Maps application first. AND you need to be online when you do. It will take some time to set up, download whatever it does (current satellite positions? index files? report your location to Nokia Microsoft? who knows?). Once set up, close the app and connect to PC in PC Suite mode to do the rest. You need to do that in that order otherwise PC Suite will complain that Maps is not installed.

Edit: Err, I see peterleinchen has beaten me to it.

No, you have it on your PC :) (But I see you've figured it out yourself, well done.)

When I start Maps application while being online (Wi-Fi), it takes some time to get GPS signal, it does show right coordinates, I guess, but no map =\ . I've found New York just for lulz - no streets, no roads, no nothing, just a marker and that's it.
That's weird. Yes it takes some time after the first start to set up. Maybe you weren't patient enough and it was still downloading the map around you. I remember when I was setting up one device after a reflash, I started the Maps app, put the phone on the window sill and went to give the kids a bath. Half an hour later, it was all set up, with my street proudly on the screen :)

Why it's not in FAQ, btw? Doesn't seem obvious to me. Thought PC Suite is pretty useless.
I agree it's not obvious. I guess Nokia engineers never imagined somebody would try downloading maps without running the app first.

Yes! :) But you gave out directly all info needed!!

@FlashInTheNight
on first start there is/will be created a file on (/home/user/)MyDocs named qf (or .qf) which holds some parameters for this (hackable html) app. E.g. if you want to download whole world.maps you need to rise space available (just have a look to that text file).

Well figured out. Do not ask me how much time I spent then as I was looking for info, too (but imagine yourself 3 or more years ago).
