Sorry, no cigar.

If you host your own mail server on your own domain, there's no way you can get tapped. Not in any country as long as you are acreful on how you set it up.

Really? And how exactly do the emails get to your server?

If you're only emailing people on your own server then they never leave.

It puzzles me why the security services intercept facebook, twitter, gmail etc. You'd have to be a particularly dim criminal/terrorist to use public services.

In other news, bringing it back on topic, Jolla announced a secure fork of Sailfish this morning, partnering with SSH of Finland. Hopefully that's a partnership that will work and will feed back into 'mainstream' Sailfish.

That sums up most of the participants in ISIS/ISIL pretty well...

@aegis already gave you the reply, secure-by-default is between people having account on the same server.
For other mails, use encryption and hope that they have secure environment.

this would be outside the scope of a tech company offering B2C and B2B services.

Could you explain a bit more what you mean?

How is mail service hosting "outside the scope" for a company offering services? Wasn't this exactly what Lavabit was doing, a company offering services? And when the spooks tried to pressure them, they did the honorable thing; rather than surrender they threw the spoon into corner?

I hope Jolla have something similar to this planned for the J2 (whilst keeping TOH concept), but I doubt it:
