I think you misunderstood my sentence. Folks on these threads complain because Android uses Dalvik, which puts a layer between the software and cpu and thus compromises performance. ART does not have this "layer" and can significantly improve performance. Sorry if this sounds too simplistic. Regardless, I've seen it demoed on an S5. It is impressive.

Which fanboys are you referring to? The apple fanboys, maemo fanboys, android fanboys, Jolla fanboys, N9 fanboys, windows fanboys? Wait... are there windows fanboys? I dunno...

I am referring to android fanboys but essentially I just read it in a german article that they are assuming it to be 'Lollipop'. :D

Not so.
The difference between Dalvik and ART is that Dalvik's layer is generated during runtime of the application and ART pre-generates whole right after installing the app.
The level of indirection stays the same - only app startup/wormup time improves.

Maybe I'm confusing things by using the term layer although some times I see diagrams with Dalvik between the software and the CPU. I suppose ART would be there but used differently. I think one important difference is how ART and Dalvik handle the compilation of apps. Because ART uses Ahead-of-TIme (AOT) compilation there can be significant improvement of app performance over Dalvik which uses Just-in-Time(JIT) that compiles code when you run the app. AOT compiles code when you install it.
Maybe JIT approach was useful to reduce memory usage but at the cost of performance speed.

Sorry I did misunderstand you :P
I have been using ART on all my android devices, it makes a noticeable difference in performance and battery life.

From what I read up on how it works, the uncompiled apps are put on the play store, and the device locally compiles it, and then runs the compiled file, as opposed to interpreting it as it goes. The only issue I have had with ART is 2 seconds of lag when the file is being compiled.

Eh, I don't think it is worth worrying about. I already have a google account with plenty of personal information associated with it. If google wants the data, they will probably find a way to get it anyhow.

I think that is the gist of it but ART does some other stuff. Check the link in my previous post. So, from what I've seen, the main improvement in performance is the actually start up of the app. I wonder, because you compile at installation with ART instead of on the fly with Dalvik, if that allows for more flexibility in compilation options to improve performance while the app is running.

Re: Latest And Greatest!

Unfortunately on the Galaxy Note 3 that I have, ART isn't an option. Samsung didn't include it.

I really wanted to see the difference it made.

Granted, I could probably try to find a more standard ROM for my phone, but then I would lose all the cool stylus functionality, which is the main reason I got the Note 3.

Re: Latest And Greatest!

Agreed.

I'm on Alliance ROM for this reason. All the benefits of TW ROM, but more lean and much added functionality from AOSP ROMs. ART isn't even Xposed-compatible...yet.

I do wonder if ART has a more noticeable impact on slower devices or faster devices.

Agree 100%. No removable battery = no sell to me. One of my two N900s just came up with the dreaded loose USB port. This time, I don't think I will fix it. So, I am down to one. It may not last long... So, I am starting to look around for a replacement. So far, the Samsung ones are the most appealing, either the Galaxy Note 3 or the Galaxy S5. The things I like are:

- Removable battery.

-Expandable memory (SD card slot).

- Ability to enable Mass Storage mode instead of MTP. I have to verify this with these two models, but this video seems to make this likely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84O8KlPxEyU

- Fast.

- And of course, tons of apps. :D (Maybe even LibreOffice will one day be usable on Android.)

If I can't put a sd/micro/mini card in for storage...

If I definitely can't use a card for alt. os's ...even chrooting..

At All.
Hence I gotta have the neo900..

Guys, its possible to remove the battery. It just that you lacks the skill to do it. Sorry to break it to you ;)

Got you :D

Everything is possible, just like the n900 but what is needed here is more Skill or magic or more of both.

LibreOffice works fine on my Note 3. In addition, I've have used linux distributions like Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora on my Note3. Btw, I first heard about the N900 in one of your blogs about Easy Debian years ago. So you are fully responsible for getting me hooked on running linux distributions on cell phones!

most of the last generation of nokia flagships have gone pretty cheap now. and all of them are getting WP8.1 so they'll remain supported for probably another year (although i don't know how important manufacturer "support" is to us on maemo.org, haha). i looked on ebay and found the lumia 920 (4.5 in 768p screen) for $189 USD in excellent condition, unlocked but AT&T branded. there are other brand new options for about 20 bucks more. similar pricing on the 925 too (same screen, much lighter body, better camera). didn't look on amazon but you could probably find some over there too.

Yeah
grudgingly and reluctantly agree :D
Gotta admit the Note would be the ONLY other option for me...
and only under duress.
It would be JUST bearable with the larger screen (lil' too large for my liking...) and debian or 'buntu running.
thank goodness I don't need to make that choice.

You know, I like the resistive screen too, but I was rather impressed with what Samsung have done with their screen and the stylus on the Note 3. You can even use the S5 wearing gloves! (not sure about the Note 3).

Big curiosity +2 that from me too...
I'm always curious...
I have kept 1 eye on the note 3...
but haven't done any serious research...
what else does it run?
what progs
what os's
huh...
For a non-resistive screen ...using gloves is quite an improvement.
yeah man I wanna see the list too :D

Well, I have LibreOffice, wxMaxima, Latex, Cadabra, evince, Emacs and Firefox on my Ferdora img. They all seem to work ok except for sound. I think there is a fix for that but I don't know for sure if it works. You can actually run android apps seperately while the linux distribution is running including making a phone call texting or using a youtube app for example. The android sdcard is mounted so I have access to my files on the phone from, say, the Fedora distribution I'm running. The desktop environment is made via vnc connection otherwise you will simply have a terminal to run basic commands. Let me know if you want to know something else.

Gloves work on the Note 3, but not 100%.
It can get annoying like today, I was holding a pack of gums between my thumb and the phone and it started playing music on its own.

There's also gloves with fingertips that have some sort of fiber that registers screen taps.

I gotta say, I haven't experimented much with the Note 3.
I can't remember chroot'ing it. I never kept AOSP ROMs.
The only thing I need is the VillainMOD ROM (its an "aosp-ication" of TouchWiz) but allows you to have the proper camera stack, radios, and not stuff up stability or battery life like most AOSP ROMs tend to.

Oh, ofcourse I need Xposed and my choice of Apps (Apex, Kii, 500px etc etc).

I can't ask much more from the N3, its close to perfection as Samsung has ever come to. S4 isn't too bad, S5 is just horrid... M8 is overrated.
