Ahoy, sailors. I've received many messages about updates for my patches. Please, be patient and just wait - my laptop is dead, so I can work only with my office-PC after work. Everything will be updated, but only as it possible. Thanks.

(i.e. still the same setup):

9. [Usability bug] Updating a Patch by tapping on a newer version of it in Patchmanager2's web catalog causes significant issues
For example, see "P.P.S." in the report https://openrepos.net/comment/18958#comment-18958 and the subsequent discussion there.
The correct behaviour (from a simple user's perspective) would presumably be:
a. When an applied Patch is updated, always try to unapply the active (old) version first.
b. When an installed Patch is updated (this includes case a., after triggering an unapply action), try to uninstall the old version of this Patch before installing the new one.
c. For RPM-Patches, Warehouse / the RPM utility handles b., and it looks like such an action can notify Patchmanager2 to perform a., before actually updating the RPM. But I am not sure, if receiving such a notification is currently used by Patchmanager2 to perform a. for RPM-Patches. The wording issue (#8 of this list) supposedly contributes to my confusion here. Up to now I have only observed installing conflicting (i.e. *other*) RPM-Patches to trigger un*installing* (i.e. contrary to "unapplying") of Patches, but not updating one un*applying* its old version (at least not stated so by a SFOS-event notification). Side note: I have not (yet) taken a look, what is actually done in the pre-install scripts of RPM-Patches, or if some other mechanism to trigger Patchmanager2 exists.

10. [Feature suggestion] Indicate updateable Patches in the web catalog after entering it
Issue description: Currently one has to individually enter the sub-pages of all installed Patches in Patchmanager2's web catalog to look for updates. For RPM-Patches Warehouse handles this.
Possible solution: Indicate all installed Patches, for which an update is available, with some symbol (e.g. a star or a text "Update available") in the web catalog's top level list, after entering it (and hence refreshing the meta-data of all Patches available there).

P.S.: Continued in ...

Well, all I can do is to file these issues there: https://github.com/sailfishos-patche...manager/issues
Would that be helpful?

Pull requests (PRs) would require working code, which is beyond my capabilities.

And please provide a link on https://openrepos.net/content/coderus/patchmanager-20 to https://github.com/sailfishos-patche...manager/issues, if you want issues rather to be filed there than here.
Currently one line on Patchmanager2's OpenRepo page clearly states the opposite: "Please consider posting bugs and ideas to forum thread: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=92935"
Sorry, I would have filed them there in the first place, if I would have known earlier, that https://github.com/sailfishos-patches/patchmanager is Patchmanager2's development location.

"Estimated Time to Arrival (ETA)":
Originally used on displays at train stations and airports ("ETA: hh:mm" indicating the expected arrival time), the term ETA made its way via some classic UNIX command line tools (e.g. ftp, where "ETA: X seconds" indicates the remaining up- or download time) into (UNIX-) nerd speech.

The Urban Dictionary ("ud": either in the WWW or via the SFOS app "Unofficial Urban Dictionary") should provide you with most such nerd language explanations.

11. [Usability issue] Please move the entry "Unapply all patches" in Patchmanager2's top level pulley menu one or two positions further up, i.e. *above* the "About" entry.
Background: I accidentally selected "Unapply all patches" numerous times when trying to enter Patchmanager2's web catalog.
As entering the web catalog is often needed, the pulley menu entry "Unapply all patches" should be moved further away from the web catalog's entry.

12. [Big bad bug] Triggering "Unapply all patches" in Patchmanager2's top level pulley menu merely unapplies the first 10 Patches!
Hopefully Patchmanager2's built-in patch "Unapply all patches on Upgrade" behaves differently and really unapplies *all* Patches! (I still had Patchmanager1 installed when upgrading from SFOS 2.0.5.6 to 2.1.0.11, so I have not observed this situation, yet.) *Edit:* See post 2276 by coderus for an answer.

Maybe this is related to issue 6. on this list (or vice versa).

a bit, I am providing this list of Patches playing together nicely on my Jolla 1 phones under SFOS 2.1.0.11 and Patchmanager 2.3.1-10.39.1.

Suggestions for additional, well working (in all three aspects: technically, WRT functionality *and* WRT usability) Patches, which do not conflict with any of these Patches below, are certainly welcome.

Format: - <Patch name> <my rating>, <Patch author>, <Source: wc (Patchmanager2's web catalog) | RPM (e.g. per Warehouse)> [, <alt (Alternative) | cts (contains) | "cts" (contains similar / same functionality) | cnf (just conflicts)>: <Patch name> <my rating>, <Patch author>, <wc | RPM>]

"My rating" resolves as follows:
- (+): Nice to have
- (++): Very good
- (+++): IMO a must
No "rating" indicates, that I have not used this Patch long enough to rate it.

Patches listed as an alternative (alt) to and / or contained (cts / "cts") in a Patch *always* conflict with it (i.e. they cannot be applied together in Patchmanager, as they are patching the same locations of the SFOS UI).

- Right-handed tabs (++), Markkyboy, RPM
- Add more calendars (++), Schturman, RPM
- Led missed calendar events (+), Schturman, RPM
- Don't start/end events at midnight (++), Luen, wc
- Auto snooze & snooze interval (++), Schturman, RPM
- Clock in alarms (+), Markkyboy, RPM

alt/"cts": Statusbar background, toxip, wc,
cnf: Force cover size, eugenio (+), RPM
- Volume control settings (++), alina, RPM
- Add more shortcuts into lockscreen pulley (+), Ancelad, wc
- Lockscreen analog clock (+++; analog clock is optional!), Ancelad, wc,

- Combined pulley menu (++), Ancelad, wc,
alt: Return old pulley menu (+), Ancelad, wc

And if you like to disable these functions (I don't):
- No automatic launcher hint, cornerman, RPM
- Less home animations, cornerman, RPM
... or add this functionality (I also don't):
- MazeLock, coderus, wc,
alt: Scramble lockpad buttons, coderus, wc

As YMMV (just as everybody's, including mine over time), please refrain from criticising my preferences (WRT chosen functionalities) or my (certainly) subjective "ratings".

Try installing "Patchmanager 2.0" (instead of "Patchmanager for Jolla settings") via Warehouse.

There is nothing "windy" about satisfying the dependencies of a RPM: They are needed, otherwise would not be marked as required.
But why are you doing this manually?
IMO, you should start using Warehouse: https://openrepos.net/content/basil/...use-sailfishos
Side note: Well, if you love the command line so much, add the necessary repositories and use "pkcon install". Or at least "pkcon install-local", if you insist in manually downloading RPMs (very tedious), instead of using "rpm -i" directly.

I would kill for a patch moving notifications (Charger plugged, Low battery, Connected, New maps to download in Here WeGo, etc.) away from the very top of the screen and 1. hiding the status bar, 2. hiding the search field in some applications. Here WeGo for instance: you start it to get your position as you realize you're getting lost, but damn you never took the time to update those offline maps, now you can only wait until all notifications go away before you can type your search terms.

Moving the notifications to the bottom of the screen (and make them easy to swipe away (for hiding) or tap (for more details) with the thumb by the way) would be good. Even better would be a patch allowing to adjust the Y coordinates to whatever you prefer, like still on the top but below the status bar.

I know but that does not solve the whole issue. I mentioned swiping the notifications to dismiss them in my message because I thought it would be good if both patches could be compatible. Sorry if that was not clear.

The problem is that this means notifications would have to behave differently with the keyboard active, as you don't want to hit a notification while you're typing, and you don't want that notification to cover up your text field either. I also think notifications by themselves are better off at the bottom of the screen, but when you have to take into account all the possible things a notification could obstruct, the top of the screen is really the place where they are least likely to get in your way. Recent versions of Android and iOS now finally have a use for their top bar and show incoming notifications there, so they don't cover anything (except notification icons), but of course there is no such bar on Sailfish. It really is a difficult problem to solve and there may be no ideal solution.

Kabouik 2017-07-05 19:04

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

Good point, I didn't think about the keyboard, but then that's why an adjustable Y would be convenient to let users decide by themselves where the notifications would be the less likely to conceal fields given the applications they usually use.

nthn 2017-07-05 19:22

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

I think if you're going that far it probably makes more sense to ask application developers not to put important functionality in a place where it could be hidden by an incoming notification. Jolla's own applications manage to avoid the problem, anyway.

+1 on that!

That of course assumes that the OS UI is not going to change and that the notifications will stay where they are. As we know, this has not always been the case with Sailfish.

"Unapply all patches" works fine on 2.1.0.x

peoples reported this patch fails to apply on 2.1.1.x, patchmanager will be updated with compatibility changes after 2.1.1.x will be released officially to EA.

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

Is there any known incompatibility with "Improved notification preview"? I can't apply it and I am not sure what other patch would be incompatible with it. I have "No notifcation preview" but I try disabling it first and it was the same.

Also, is "Improved notification preview" an update to "Notification dismiss & remove" and is the latter an update to "Notification dismiss"? I'm a bit confused with all those patches having different names, if they are all the same more or less advance patch, giving them different names means they can be installed in parallel and be visible in the list in Patchmanager, that's confusing.

Well, that was too terse for me to comprehend:

Did you mean: You are sure, that the "Unapply all patches" built-in Patch of Patchmanager 2.0 works fine when updating SailfishOS, while triggering "Unapply all patches" via Patchmanager 2.0's top pulley entry seems to be broken?

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

patchmanager-2.3.2-10.40.1.jolla_.armv7hl.rpm installs flawlessly under SFOS 2.1.0.11, but subsequently applying its built-in Patch "Remove all patches" fails (presumably as it is made for SFOS 2.1.1.23).
Supposedly Patchmanager 2.3.2-10.40.1 ought to fail to install on SFOS 2.1.0.x per RPM conflict.

Tested on Jolla 1 phones (under SFOS 2.1.0.11, obviously ;) ), using Warehouse for updating.

Reverted to Patchmanager 2.3.1-10.39.1, now built-in Patch "Remove all patches" applies flawlessly, again.

I told you right here. Patch can't be made universal due to changes in 2.1.1, so latest patchmanager is only compatible with latest sfos version.

That was not my point (and clear before, as you denoted); it was to point out the seemingly missing RPM conflict (with SFOS < 2.1.1) to you (as the main developer of Patchmanager 2.0) and users running into the same issue.

But hey, one can easily revert to the previous version (although this is a bit tedious) and ignore this update in Warehouse / Storeman, until SFOS 2.1.1 is publicly released. (I.e. everything is fine, basically. ;) )

pushing an update most can't install is a much worse solution :)
