Interesting and of course, understandable. I guess I thought the logs would be enough :)

Hopefully you'll discover something although I don't think there is any problem with my patch.

Thanks for trying, seems there is a problem with both of my devices despite being reset numerous times,

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Not much point in resetting again, plus it takes too many hours to execute and is not solving my problem......fk, fk, f*kety fk. :(

Maybe it was this letting me think not to try uninstalling but rather leave that system package untouched? ;)

try to uninstall patchmanager, remove /vat/lib/patchmanager folder, reboot install latest pm3 and try again. and send me new logs. please make sure (if possible) logs are since device boot.

Thanks, but there is no patchmanager folder in /var/lib/ and I have removed pm several times but to no avail.

Neither is Tutorial.

What is or is not a "system" package is a completely arbitrary choice.

I know I've already responded to this, but I find it rather amazing that there is no 'patchmanager' folder in /var/lib/* despite patchmanager3 being installed and roughly working - any ideas @coderus?

As you already said; "try uninstall pm3, remove /var/lib/patchmanager, reboot, blah, blah" - I have done this a number of times, still there is no patchmanager folder in /var/lib/* and still my problem with patches not always appearing in PM3's list still exists....?

I'd love to get this fixed so I can come back and continue with my slow progress of learning about SailfishOS, otherwise, it is like walking through 3ft of wet, sticky mud :(

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

pm3 not using /var/lib/patchmanager folder, it create cache in /tmp
after uninstalling patchmanager you can remove only config from /etc/patchmanager2.conf and /usr/share/patchmanager/patches.
after reboot you should have clear system with no indication of patches

Okay, pm3 seems more responsive and is largely doing its tasks. Only once I had to select "Unapply patches" to get a particular patch to show, but so far so good.

On a different note, a minor spelling error in PM3 as highlighted; :D :)

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

Quick question for anyone, (sorry if it's addressed in here somewhere - I don't even really know enough to know what to search for). I always have 'Start as root for... (Filecase, File Browser, Cargo Dock, etc.)' apps by Schturman installed, and I particularly lean heavily on the Filecase root app, which has the best clipboard and multi-select usability, plus an excellent search function. I regularly have to deal with a situation that goes like this: I usually install the 'app' version of 'Start as Root', instead of the 'patch' version, (I think there's both options for all of them), because I have experienced occasional stability issues with patches. But, for some reason, it seems like my app automatically gets replaced with the patch, and stops working. So, I'll install 'Start as Root for Filecase' app, and it installs and works fine, then at some point down the road, after a reboot, my 'Filecase Root' icon is gone, and when I go to Storeman, it shows the app as 'Not Installed' and the patch as 'Installed', but then I go to Patchmanager, and the patch is installed, but when I try to apply it, I get 'Failed to Apply Patch' error. The only solution is to uninstall the patch, then install the app, and then it works again. Not too big of a headache, but is there any way to prevent it?

My best suggestion - ask Schturman

I really, really, really wish at least one of these thee things happened:
  1. Patchmanager allowed me to reinstall the same version of a patch without having to uninstall it first;
  2. People stopped updating the same patch with a new OS version dependency without updating the patch version number;
  3. People switched from making a patch dependent on the OS version to making it depend on the version of the actual component being patched.

well, i can disable editing files for existing versions in catalog

handling separate component versions in patch is somewhat complicated

Hi there, yesterday I finally updated my Xperia X from 2.x to the latest Sailfish Version. Since I had unapplied all patches for that I figured I could update to PM3 as well, despite the still-present "beta".

Is it possible without uninstalling? I got an error from storeman: "File './armv7hl/bluetooth-rfkill-event-hciattach-1.0.6-10.1.1.jolla.armv7hl.rpm' not found...

Why would I need such a file for a Patch Manager? And why is it not in store-repository?

I think you might need to:

Code:

devel-su
pkcon refresh

A feature request: a menu option in PM to do just that.

Thx, that did the trick. Didn't think of it and sorry to have asked the same question again.

Still I think this is strange behaviour as I just updated in the morning. One would think, the OS would know the most recent repository.

Nope, this feature request goes to Jolla!

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

Yeah it would be nice/better if Jolla implemented it, but it would probably be easier getting the Storeman dev to add it.

pm nothing to do with your repo cache. possible you mean storeman, not pm?

Storeman would be a better place, agreed.

I was wondering why Amboss had a problem with PM that was solved by pkcon refresh but it turns out I just did not read his post properly. Sorry.

cuz pkcon cant install any extra depends from repo because of outdated repositories. also: current storeman uses wrong "update" method, instead of "install" one, causing much worse problems.

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

Yes, sorry. I tend to post confusing questions.

Anyway, since first part of my question was answered and was a problem of storeman or even jolla itself: The second part of the question was, why PM3 needs a bluetooth kill switch (I guess this is what the name of it implies) as dependency. Is this for the "reset services" thingy?

And third: Why is it still called beta. Is it considered less stable than PM2?

coderus 2019-04-10 09:24

Re: [WIP] App / Tweak: patchmanager a system-wide patching system + homescreen tweak

>> why PM3 needs a bluetooth kill switch
it doesnt. see: "current storeman uses wrong "update" method, instead of "install" one, causing much worse problems."

>> Why is it still called beta
because i dont have enough time to kill all the bugs and test everything from scratch

Nobody really knows (presumably including @coderus), as Patchmanager 3 lacks testers carrying out proper tests with a focus on reproducibility and providing comprehensive feedback / bug reports beyond "it does not work".

E.g. take a look at PM's issue tracker and you will realise that only very few ever provided proper feedback.

And while properly filed complaints ("issue reports") have been quite rare, @coderus never received any code contribution ("Pull Request") for Patchmanager 3, AFAICS.

So if you want speed up the development of PM3, do something besides asking / complaining!

P.S.: For me recent PM3 versions are behaving "better" than the last PM2, but YMMV.

I was just curious and also wanted to judge the risk if I ise it. Thanks for the insights by both of you.

As for testing and bug reporting: I would love to help out and by that give back some to those investing their precious time. I'm afraid, this is out of my limits at the time. I know it sounds like a common excuse, but job, family and being financial council of an association (is this what Vereinsvorstand translates?) eats most of my time. I didn't even manage to give promised feedback to PureMaps (sorry @rinigus).
