Stolen N800
i'd like to be the first to report that my N800 was stolen (from inside my house). :(
seriously, this is just a reminder to the community to be careful with their new computers - particularly with stored passwords (banks, email, etc.). Is there a way to password protect the N800 (login)? probably a pain, but might be worth it in the long run. i've already ordered my 2nd N800. should be here next week. |
Re: Stolen N800
terrible...
ya you can lock the screen at bootup and after periods of inactivity, via the control panel. |
Re: Stolen N800
Locking the device is partial security. They can also remove any of the memery cards and read them from another system. An encrypted file system would be nice or software like password safe but better. ewallet on the n800 would be nice.

Re: Stolen N800
This is where truecrypt would be really cool. Especially if it could be added to a login script. Mmc cards are encrypted until a successful login. That's why I use file vault on my laptop. 128 bit aes encryption should keep them out long enough for me to change all my passwords.

Re: Stolen N800
Too bad they didn't try to break in while you were at home so you could have shot them to death.
Someone tried that to my father's house while he was at home and he shot through the door and killed the man dead. Police investigated and found him innocent (castle doctrine) and now he's looking at suing the man's family for what it cost him to repair the door. |

The crackhead probably pawned it. First places to look are the local pawnshops. |

Re: Stolen N800
here is the link to ewallet http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/ew/ewallet.htm. I used it on my wm5 device for storing personal information. It encrypts its own files but not others so it's not an end all solution and is comparable to PasswordSafe which is available for the IT but better IMO.
On the browser side you can just clear your information or don't save passwords and set the lock feature on the device itself. The browser info is on the device so if they can't unlock it, they can only reflash which will erase the data on it, from what i know, so you would be covered. |
Re: Stolen N800

Re: Stolen N800
slider, chances are if they had the nuts to break into your house, its wasn't without a knife or gun in hand.
fist VS. gun/knife You need a gun buddy. |

Or is that just concealed-carry permits for its citizens? Usually when I travel stateside I carry a map of states with reciprocity agreements with North Carolina. If a state doesn't have one with NC then I don't go to/thru that state if I don't have to. As far as securing the home, 1/2 inch ballistic glass in all the windows with dual-sill-locks, disguised steel doors on all entrances to the dwelling set into steel frames sunk deep below the floor and extending into the ceiling, double non-bump locks on those doors with at least one lock on each door being biometric controlled access (either finger or palm), with a good home alarm system rigged to popup flash-bang grenades sunk into the floor near the entrances and set to a 30 second delay. Of course, the ballistic glass might be overkill since it's so expensive and a pain-in-the-***** to work with. But if you live in a frequent drive-by area then it's worth it. But nothing short of a tank or APC with a battering ram is getting in a house like that. |
Re: Stolen N800
Funny but you forgot the 2 ft solid concrete walls with 2 inch diameter steal rebar mesh of course.

Re: Stolen N800
wow we should re-label this thread as "N800 and self-defense." maybe somebody could install a taser for the N800. the input button could act as a trigger. that would be cool.
seriously, thx everyone for the concern. my training has taught me to leave quickly if a gun or knife is present. however, i am trained to disarm blades, but that would be a last resort. on the other hand, retractable batons are quite easy to carry (and legal). two batons in concert can be devasting. guns, again, are a different matter. on another note, the police officer who helped us had some really good ways to protect the house. i think i'll try some of her suggestions before installing lexan windows. :D anyway, keep an eye on your tablet. |

Nokia N800: ~$399 Para-Ordinance .45 ACP Warthog: ~$700 Box of Powerball .135 grain .45 ammunition: ~$25 Shooting a crackhead who tries to rob you of your precious N800 at knifepoint? Priceless. And NOTHING is "legal" to carry concealed on or about your person in any state of the union other than a handgun with a valid concealed-carry permit. Especially a baton. Not a knife, not even a pair of brass knuckles. You learn this and other fun facts when you take an actual concealed-carry class, which is mandatory to get a CCP. I used to take martial arts until I was 17 and joined the Army. Then I learned how worthless all of it was against firearms. Not to mention by the time the martial arts guy even looks to make a move you've already shot him twice. Kind of hard to kick a gun away or even run when you've suddenly sprouted a sucking chest wound. While I'm sure martial arts is a great exercise and might impress a chick or two, this is no longer the Bruce Lee 60's era of fewer guns and more knives. And that's a damn shame. Everyone in America today carries a gun. Yee-haw! |
Re: Stolen N800
quick update: i received my new N800 today. It arrived with a voucher from Skype for 3-months of unlimited calls to any phone (skype-out, i think). This is a new promotion, that i was unaware of, and this promotion was not in effect when i purchased my first N800.
i really like the idea of competing with other devices via voip and wifi. i think these aspects can really distinguish N800 (and its successors) in the long run. |

Re: Stolen N800
That sux loosing your IT, I lost mine by accident and waited to post a similar thread here. I was so piss, I've had to changed all my saved passwords, even sent some emails to my self hoping the person who found it read it.
Some how I got distracted and left it on top of the car, when i realized and came back home just found the pouch. :(. That was not a pleasant situation, almost felt like crying for my 2 weeks old IT. Please take care of your babies and watch them all the time. |
