Hi dirkvl. I'm about to select component colors and was wondering what material the wood finishes are made of. Are they a synthetic wood? A wood veneer with gloss coating? Something else? Thanks!

I meant like after production, we have a lot of work ahead and these kind of things are of lower priority then sending everyone their keyboards.

it will be something like the engraved handwritten names of the team, we have no pics yet. no custom engravings.

I am looking for a product with as good finish as possible. Therefore, I see a risk with a painted surface prone to scratching or peeling. And with a base material in contrasting colour the wear and tear might soon be very visible. yes, but you can order the casings separately later on if you want to replace it

Given this I think the polished white option is the safest bet but it is quite boring. Alumide would be another alternative but all alumide products I have seen so far has had a very rough, uneven, surface texture. we use polished alumide, which actually has a very smooth and metallic surface

I second this. Not the part about the custom signatures, I know they are not possible. But what size/where will it be?

Do you have a link where the various layouts are displayed in detail, with a clear link to the choices to make in the Kickstarter survey? I would like to be sure I choose the right one!

You probably want people to choose the right one from the start too, or there will be a lot of administration, so perhaps the survey should have links to the images of each layout.

One more question in regards to the wood backplate. What kind of finish does it have? Is it a polymer coating of something like that or the wood with no coating? Thanks!

The kickstarter page had Scandic, but no Finnish as a layout.
Does the Finnish layout having the scandic (æøå)?

Kickstarter: stealth, qwerty, qwertz, qzery, scandic, cyrillic and diy.
The reward survey email use: Qwerty, Qwertz, Azerty, Cyrillic, Finnish and Stealth.
Any updated link for kbd layouts?
Looking forward to my TOHKBD.

Hi!

And congrats!

@dirkvl, what amount of VAT do these pledges have? Surely a lot of us on this thread buy a TOH for their company and would appreciate getting the VAT back, if in any way possible :)

Cheers!

I can't remember what were those rewards for Rev1 buyers. As I recall, they were shown on KS page when campaign was on. But the pledges are not shown there anymore.

As I recall, Solar TOH was there, so that will be my answer.

TOHKBD-rev1 owners

If you bought a TOHKBD rev1 straight from Dirk (not second hand), you are a hero and the success of this and other projects is for a large part thanks to you! Your faith and support will not go unnoticed! If you order a TOHKBD2 now, you will additionally get a SolarTOH (colour of your choosing), a BreadboardTOH kit or a free upgrade to Signature Edition!

I have a problem: Action Needed! There is a problem with your payment to TOHKBD — The Other Half Keyboard for your Jolla by Dirk.

I tried to fix, with this result: This card was declined. Please try another card.

And another one bites the dust too. ;-) What can I do?

additional sent a PM to dirkvl

Edit: A Firefox WITHOUT "NoScript" addon did it - and Dirk answers very quick.

It was a NoScript issue. I allowed every script for this page before, and had no success. It works for me with a firefox *without* NoScript addon.

Ok, it seems all payment issues are caused by NoScript. Will put in next update.

In what older are you going to send keyboards?
Who funded project first?
Or who answered survey first?

hero - proto's - signatures (the 200 option) - diy - 100 - 110 - and so on

seemed like most fair order. but still, i cannot predict how it will go. maybe all will be finished in one week after waiting on some part and then sent on the same day, who knows :)

Does the Finnish layout having the scandic (æøå)?

Based on pictures it has the layout that both finns and swedes use (.fi & .se keyboards are identical). So it would have å, ä and ö, but no æ or ø.

Not sure if they could fit æ&ø on ä&ö keys. Plus danes and norwegians having those keys on different places* would require having three symbols per key.

*one of the least smartest decisions in keyboard desings ever.

[OT] Clearly you know nothing about the UK keyboard layout ;) It is completely different from the US one. I am not talking about the obvious $ vs £. No, they differ in the placement of @ and # too (perhaps other ones too, can't remember off the top of my head). Smart? No. [/OT]

Norwegian qwerty keyboard has ø on the key that Swedish qwerty layout has ö, and æ in the place of ä, Danish has the place of æ and ø swapped compared with the Norwegian qwerty layout. I think it is easy enough to recognize ö as ø for the swedish->norwegian layout, but if a Danish layout is preferred I guess it is easy enough to remember that the two are swapped, or just use Norwegian instead.

Because I didn't want to use a blank layout, dvorak wasn't available(for any language), and I mostly type norwegian, that means that Finnish qwerty layout is my best choice I think. I think Finnish qwerty and Norwegian qwerty layout are equally good, can easily remember the few keys that are different.

I don't know yet if the Jolla keyboard is good enough to use without looking, but if it is then what is printed on the keys won't matter, if it isn't then a qwerty layout is better than a blank one. I don't want to commit to engrave a layout myself until I know how much extra it will cost me and besides it is a lot of work to ensure every key has the correct third and fourth level characters.

For the norwegian vkb-layout I just copied an english dvorak layout, changed first and second level keys so they match norwegian dvorak, and added/moved a couple of third and fourth level characters to ensure I have them and preferably in the right position. A VKB layout can be tweaked any time, an engraved physical layout better be right the first time. Much more work making that.

The Swedish layout (Scandic) is fine by me, so I just selected the Finnish layout in the query.
(The Swedish and Norwegian letters are pronounced similar and in same place.)

Dear backer, fan, user, community member, friend and sailor

It has been an amazing ride and with your help we have left the harbour with a boat three times larger than planned!

We are humbled by all the kind words you said, are grateful for all the useful suggestions and will now embark on the journey of making it happen.

You will receive a survey very soon to enter your colour/layout preferences and your details. If you need help visualizing click here. We had 20 layout requests for 14(!) different layouts, so we'll stick to the 6 original layouts presented on the main page.

Again, on behalf of the whole TOHKBD team, we thank you very much and are excited about the journey ahead!

Sail on,

Dirk, Kimmo & Andrew

The backplate will have a very slightly different shape, because the bottom piece is reshaped, to remove the need for screws

It should look exactly as the regular only with laser engraved signatures by the tohkbd team (dirk, kimmo and andrew).

From the 7th update:
Can I change my address or preferences after?
Yes. You can change your address via Kickstarter. If you want to change something else because, mail this to info@funkyotherhalf.com. Please only use this for changing important things (e.g. you picked the wrong layout) and not for changing the colours to the latest fashion. Changing preferences will be possible up to the point the part in question is ordered.

these will be on next test pcb for keyboard piece.

As long as we don't have a repeat of the Jolla battery pins scenario where the surface area in contact with the battery pin was too small to be reliable (which caused the phone to crash at inopportune moments).

Perhaps using 'flat head' pogo pins with rounded corners is preferable (has a more reliable contact) to 'pointed head' pogo pins?

Personally I would have preferred a standard polished backplate instead of any of the wood/vinyl backplates offered, but I know it's too late for that, and I understand we can't have all the options we want otherwise the scope would be too large and the project never-ending.
