Still haven't received mine in post or received any email. But all Scandic THKD should arrive next week the latest then, judging from Dirks previous posts. Can live with that.

Without trying to play down the TOKBD guys' programming prowess, I seriously doubt it. Even if you lock the Jolla in landscape in Settings, some system screens still insist on showing in portrait. It looks like the OS itself is not capable of a proper orientation lock :( I would be happy to pay the TOHKBD guys a full cost of another TOHKBD if they managed to fix that in their driver.

EDIT: Why does my post show up twice in Active Topics? I have not done anything special to deserve such special treatment!

This is true; but, I've gotta admit I've pulled my N900's keyboard out only partway more than a few times just to avoid this orientation lock (mostly to try and grab a portrait screenshot, but a few times to try and type longer bits of text while in portrait mode).

Edit: Sorry Pichlo, I think I stepped on the special treatment of your post. ;) I think I've seen duplicate listings in Active Topics before, though; a forum software issue?

Mine arrived yesterday. Too bad that the software support was still missing when I left to work today. Oh well, I left the keyboard part at home and put the phone with the new black back cover in my pocket.

Fast forward 6 hours and now my phone looks like it's been attacked by a pack of lions. Full of random scratches from my nails, pocket lint and tabletops.

Also I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed by the velvet feel what the TOHKBDv2 has. I was expecting bit smoother and lot durable finish.

But I've waited since Mid 2013 for Jolla with physical keyboard. I think I can oversee the minor disappointments after I've got it working.

With N900 I could not wish more button rows. But after I jumped to Motorola Droid 4 I saw the light. Yesterday I was dry-typing (no sw support) with TOHKBD and I have to admit that I was smiling. I could almost imagine letters appearing to the screen. + the tactile feedback felt good.

I think Sailfish OS 2 is meant to make everything "landscapable" and "portraitable" (check the new words ;-) ), so I trust this will only get better.

Ability for keyboard to lock the orientation is nice, NB the word "ability" i.e., configurable ;-)

I have the DIP_TOH which should have a similar finish I had similar worries when I first got it. But it turned to be very durable in practice - even after ~9 months of daily usage it is working just fine, there are no missing pieces, no cracks, even no deeper scratches! Just some generic smudges here and there.

In case this is your first OH with Shapeways prints, you have to know that their plastic feels better as it wears. The uncomfortable velvet feeling slowly smoothens, and although the colors will definitely wear out, the scratches will become harder to notice. Overall I prefer my used OH over my brand new ones, just because of this crappy velvet feeling.

Shapeways print will never look very professional, but at least it gets less obvious after some time (except for the fading colors).

Having the TOHKBD opened helps having my Jolla in my hands in a nice loose grip while browsing the web.

And fast scroll to Top/Bottom of the page via Home/End keys - thats something that I have been missing in the native browser.

Can't really use it for typing due to lack of proper layout.

I have a problem with scandic letters on TOHKBD:

My scandic TOHKBD has also incorrect key mappings. no scandic letters. seems to me that it's on US layout.

can't change the layout as the option is grayed out in the settings app

Not installing from store to me.

Is the phone supposed to recognize the OH same way as official Jolla halfs or TOHOLED?

Well, mine has that issue with M. No "click", no any kind of tactile response, and must press really hard, which tends to produce more than one char. Impossible to type passwords with m on that... Not really happy about it, or the lack of Scandinavian chars from the corresponding keys, but I assume the latter won't take long to get fixed.

I'd go happy happy joy joy, but that one "dead" key spoils the fun.

Congrats for the guys for their success with the project, though!

Rauha 2015-06-12 15:18

Re: TOHKBD rev2

Mine clicks just fine and there's a slight barely noticiable tactile response.

From physical side my only big problem is that I usually have pens, scissors, cigarette lighters, etc. lying around on table with my phone. The magnets on the OH are so strong that half of the crap on my table rises with the phone when I pick it up. :)

EDIT: oh and I guess that the NFC chip on it doesn't work since I seem unable to get the phone install the software.

Did you put the Tohkbd cover in place already yesterday when the ambience was not yet available? Try to remove and re-install.

I received mine today, waited till the install pack was announced to be available and then switched TOH. Recognised TOHKBD correctly and installed the stuff promptly.

Exactly the same problem here.

The keyboard design is wonderful but I'm bit disappointed that some buttons requires much more force to press, which makes it slower to write on than the N900 keyboard. But maybe they will soften with some use.

At first my 'A' and '-' key appeared dead, 'E' and 'Y' worked but required more force than the others. Now getting better, only '-' requires special attention. Hope that all the keys get smoother and typing gets faster within 1 -2 weeks usage.

It would be wonderful if the semi-non-functionality would "wear off" with use, really. I am little pessimistic, though, that a key with no tactile response would get the response back with use (not really knowing how the keypad physically works under the covers).
Anyway, I assume that typing will get faster with practice as with any new keyboard. Fingers are good at learning stuff :)

I have a W 3 E broblem. any of those 3 buttons might give one or two correct characters, but after that button "stays on" and it keeps givin endless eeeeeeeeeee... only way t stop eeeee is close keyboard and swipe it out again.

Coud that be a sofware broblem, or is my kbd broken? :(

E: actually W button gives "we" or endless wwwwwwww

I do not want to be overly negative, but reading this on Kickstarter

Quote:

Feel the best tactile typing experience possible with this full-sized hardware keyboard Other Half for your Jolla smartphone.
and then reading the actual experiences on TMO, I wonder - how come these devices passed the QA check?

I don't mind further delays for the keyboard, as long as it is working as it should. I remember reading user reviews for TOHKBD1 back in the day (and then I expressed some concerns about focusing on looks/thickness vs quality during the TOHKBD2 development) and this seems like v1.1 instead of v2.0 based on the first feedback

PS: By delays I mean even waiting for few more months, but then getting the advertised product.

hhbbap 2015-06-12 17:58

Re: TOHKBD rev2

My tohkbd2 works pretty good, the y is a little bit hard, increasing delay avoids extra unwanted repetitions.
[edit: work fine after some usage]

Happy with its size and weight.
I have Sailfish OS 1.1.6/Aaslakkajärvi.
Liked the customable shortcuts for function keys in Tohkbd2 settings, to start applications.
Assume øæå will be fixed, not a big problem for me.
Very nice for native Jolla email and messaging clients.
Virtual keyboard shows on screen for terminal (and emacs), so far.

[edit: Solved, see reply below] Any quick fix, like a dummy small virtual keyboard?

Thanks.

The terminal menu that opens with the button in the upper right corner has VKB behavior. Off, fade, move.

Yup, tried removing, rebooting and so forth many times.

I don't think that my phone recognises it all.

I didn't think of it at first, but the vkb appears to stay visible even when tohkbd is pulled out and being typed with. In settings the active keyboard does change to TOHKBD when I pull the keypad out, but that doesn't change the onscreen kbd in any way. Anyone else with such an issue? (in a way that's nice, though, since I'm having trouble finding a question mark from the layout :D )

edit: reboot fixed that, thanks PekkU!

PekkU 2015-06-13 06:24

Reboot made the VKB hide when TOKBD is open.

Re: TOHKBD rev2

Keyboard now fitted and operational. Phone feels fairly chunky, but I'll get used to it.

I had some issues with several of the keys being unresponsive at first, but after patiently pressing them for some time they all seem to work normally now.

I noticed the FN key area is not backlit up along with the rest of the keyboard, unless a key in that area is pressed. Is this intentional? It seems like a feature but I'm not sure why it would be.

Heik 2015-06-13 11:25

Re: TOHKBD rev2

Got mine few days ago.
Looks good, fits ok, keyboard (keys) seems to be good quality.

Yesterday installed with Kimmoli's instructions.
Some problems exist:
-keys behave strangely
When using "muistiinpanot" (Memo), pressing
q:qq@qq
w:w ww
e:e e e
r:r rr
t:t/tt/
y: exited from memo, touch not reponding, keyboard not responding, Can recover only by removing battery, or waiting 5 mins. Need to remove tohkbd to be able to start.
-drains battery
-makes booting slow or impossible
-etc

Physical problems or bugs in software?

Cannot use as it is.

Anyone else same kind of experience?

1. check physical, that phone part is completely.in.place.
2. you don't have other tohs, like letoh? i mean other stuff running on i2c

Re: TOHKBD rev2

My keys are responding fine now. At first the letter H was only semi-responsive, but started working after few hours of keyboard use. Mostly very happy with the product.

Apart from the currrently lacking Å, Ä and Ö support, I would like to see some kind setting for PgUp & PgDn keys. Its hard to scroll pages with them. Too jumpy.

I think it was properly attached.
I only have "the first one" toh.

After charging, rebooting and reattaching the tohkbd, looks like it works better now, only:
-multiple character with one klick (tried to change settings, no help)
-scandic characters are missing

Edit:
In Settings using for Delay? (Aloitusviive) 380 ms and Repetition speed? (Toiston nopeus) 80 ms seems to fix the multiple character problem

Kickstarter and FunkyOH emails regularly go straight to the spam-folder, which is very inconvenient. "I haven't had ANY updates about the project in months! I am angry!" is a recurring one.
