Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

Ok so I am thinking of getting a tablet(my first one!) and I am not sure of what should I pick up...

I came up with these two "brother" tablets which are slightly different and I don't know which one to pick up!

What I want to do with them:
  • surf the web/maybe some videocalls and chatting too(not that much)
  • dual boot(if possible) and try to do mods myself(and learn more things like this ;))
  • play games(maybe I will use it for trying some games I will try to make myself)
  • maybe do some painting/sketching

These are all I can think!
Actually I don't care that much about the size!
What bothers me is that the 8" one has an ARM processor and the 10" one has an x86 processor.... How can this affect the speed of the tablet?? Also I searched a little for having linux or even windows(they are not open sourced, I know) on the 10", because I thought it could be cool to have an x86 processor on a portable device and run these operating systems on this!

What do you guys think I should get?
Thanks in advance :D

P.S: I am talking only for the WiFi version of both of these!

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

Can I suggest something not in your list?
If you want an 8 inch tablet, there's the Galaxy Note 8. It has an S Pen making it better suited for your sketching/painting needs. It also has a better processor and more RAM. I prepared a side-by-side comparison between the two 8 inchers: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3...&idPhone2=5456

If your budget is flexible, I think you should also consider the Note 10.1 2014 Edition. I can't comment on the X86 processor of the Tab 10.1. Here's another side-by-side for the 10inchers: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3...&idPhone2=5491 The resolution of the Tab 3 10.1 is pretty low for a tablet of that size.

By the way, don't you want a Nexus 7 2013 or LG G Pad 8.3?

But if I am the one buying a tablet now, I'd go for the Note 8. :)

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

Dont go With note 8. It's slow. 10.1 2014 is far better.

If you want budget, go With nexus 7. Its great for the price.

Infact, if you can afford IT. Dont go tab.

BTW. What is you main use cases?

Thanks for these :D

Actually my dad has a discount from his mobile phone carrier and he told me to get whatever I want but the price needs to be at around 250-260 euros. (The discount is 220 euros..)
I have found the galaxy note 8 in a website from a local store, but it says that it is not available...
This is why I don't know what to get if they don't have the note 8.

I wish I could buy a Nexus or the LG G pad, but I am grateful that I can even get a tablet or something else right now, in this economic situation in general :D

So, if I can get the note 8(if it is available) I will definitely get it, but if it is not which one should I choose? :p

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

Mind you, I don't own a Note 8, I have a Note II and bought a Note 10.1 2014 for my brother. The only reason I recommend it is because of the S Pen and the online reviews for it are not bad.
I think the Nexus is more hacker friendly and cheaper than the Samsungs although the screen is smaller.
Just check the cost of the G Pad and the Nexus before taking them out of the list. :)

I have seen some reviews of the note 8 as well and it seems pretty good. I don't know if it will be luggy after all.

For the Nexus and the G Pad on the stores where we can have this discount they cost 300 euros and I will not be able to get them because of the price...

I have already asked

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

Personally I wouldn't recommend Android tablets.
They're nothing but an oversized phone.

In general, I found their UI not very good. The Apps pretty poor (overblown) and just not much of a laptop replacement as I'd like.

The PlayBook is phenomenal but its on outdated hardware, and lacks ecosystem. Great potential without a future.

The only thing that makes sense is the iPad. The 32GB WiFi rMini. The iPad 4 and Air are pretty good too.

I would only recommend Android tablets as cheaper alternatives, providing they're decent quality and have a community to boot. A secondhand Transformer or Nexus are okay, I guess.

Otherwise, keep your money and use it to upgrade your smartphone.

My $0.02

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

As kangal said i was recommending an ipad if you want a tablet seriously . Most important is if you go tab take the biggest screen possibe as its always bulky pain to carry around or else go after nexus . I had a note for 1month sold it preparing for an ipad or irtab.

bill_klpd 2014-05-12 05:00

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

I was thinking of getting a mobile phone instead as well, but with these money the only thing I can get is the galaxy s3 mini and I am not sure if it is worth it. I mean it is a 2 years old phone and I think that it will not be supported anymore by google. Furtermore, it has smaller screen and its hardware is not that good too.

This is why I chose to get a tablet...
Well even I am not really a big fan of Apple(never had an apple product, neither an android...), the iPad is a little more "overpriced" for me right now.

Which one did you have??

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

How much is your budget?

I'd recommend the Moto G instead. And if you can afford it, the Nexus 5.
Have you heard of the OnePlus One? Great phone. You can even go secondhand.

PS What's your favourite screen size?

If you don't need a new phone, stick to the tablet. You don't have to pay for the telephony features so you'll get better specs for the price. You can also save some cash before making the purchase so you can get the better ones or negotiate with your dad. haha Get better grades or do some serious errands that will make your offer irresistible. Just make sure you can meet your end of the bargain.

Personally, I am really sold on the S Pen but I'd still put the G Pad 8.3 and the Nexus 7 on the list of choices.

I meen I could stay with my n900 for now and we will see after some time for a new phone!

Well I will have to choose until tomorrow, so I don't have much time to get more money :p
As for the negotiation, I am on the last school year and I need to get good grades to go at the university, so it is not something that I can negotiate with... I must get good grades because it is for my own future

Neverming, back to topic..
My thought is to ask if the note 8 is available and if it is not, then choose one of the other two tablets! I don't really like the Galaxy S3 mini and I don't need a phone that much, so I will go with the tablet!

Kangal, as vetsin stated, I want a tablet -which is available in the store I will go(some stores here in Greece doesn't sell some great products)- that costs 260< euros!
I don't really care about the size :)

What bothers me about the 10.1 is the x86 processor! Will I have problems on installing or running apps from the app store, or anything will work just like in an arm processor?

Kangal 2014-05-12 11:27

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

So your budget is pretty much US$360 (260 Eu) or below.

If it HAS to be brand new:
1) The OnePlus One (no microSD) is only $349 for 64GB.
2) For 32GB its $299, but availability is "nonexsistant" for both.
The Nexus 5 (16GB) is 290 Euros in Greece, close enough to your budget.
The Moto G (16GB) can be had for ~$290.

If it does NOT have to be new:

3) Best to grab a "used but new" Nexus 5 (32GB).
From ebay its ~$270, add shipping with insurance... so that's ~$300.
4) Or even The Moto X (16GB) off ebay for ONLY $190
5) Used Moto X (32GB) goes for $260 (add ~$30 for international shipping and insurance).
6) A used Note 3 can go as little as $370, just think about it... its the best phone on the market.
7) SONY Z1 Compact is a very desirable device, but a lil dearer at $440 used

...those should be the first on your list. Since you want to dabble with coding a bit and want to even try making a game, I'd suggest Android first... iOS is not as "free".

But if you really want a TABLET, like I said:
Number 1) 32GB Wifi Black iPad Mini Retina (hands down king) - $400 (used) or $470 (new) + p/h
Number 2) iPad Air (for some reason the Mini really impresses me) - $490 (used) or $540 (new) + p/h
Number 3) iPad 4 (32GB Wifi Black) - $300 (used) or $490 (new) + p/h
...
...
...
Closing words:
Buy from ebay. Use PayPal. Get Shipping insurance (€22). Buy a used device. Shop aggressively.
Choose between the €195 Nexus 5 (32GB) or €215 iPad 4 (Wifi 32GB)... otherwise get more funds.

I'd be personally disappointed if you didn't get one of those two, but the other options I listed above are good too.

Well I can't buy from ebay, as the main reason I am getting a new device is because I have a 220 euros discount and I can only get any device I want from specific stores...

So I can't get used products...

As for the brand new:
The OnePlus One, Nexus 5 and the Moto G are not available(as I said these are some of the products that should be available) and the ipad mini costs around 319 euros so, not possible to get it :p

Oh really? Underage?
Don't have any relatives or family that has an ebay and PayPal account?
Trust me, its the best way... you'd be doing yourself a favour.

By the way, heard of the Nvidia Shield?
It lasts for ages, very powerful, its also the ultimate portable gaming console.
I saw it used for about $150, and brand new for $200.

Say, can you use Amazon?
There's some good deals on there, but not as competitive as ebay obviously.

well I had a friend with an ebay account(I had bought my rgh chip and a case for my n900 ), but the problem here is that I can't use any of those... The reason is that I have to go to some specific stores because the discount is from the mobile phone carrier my dad uses.

Nvidia Shield? Never heard of that :P
But I searched on the stores' sites I talk about and it is not available as well...
About gaming I was thinking about getting a vita if possible instead of a tablet/phone(maybe do some hardware mods on it, I loved those on my old phat one :D), but I don't think that I want only a gaming device.

After all, do you think that the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1/8 is just a waste of money? Will not be that good?
What is your opinion about the note 8?

Kangal 2014-05-12 12:49

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 OR 10.1

To me, they are a waste of money.
They're just not good products, and they're hard to fit into your life.

The reason being is that Android plays much better on phones at the same price. Its not worth having a dumbphone and Android tablet... much better to put all that into a decent Android smartphone.

But if it has to be a tablet, iPad is the only way to go.

I've tried pretty much all the Android tablets and most Windows 8 tablets... nope.

Personally I prefer a good Android smartphone + Windows7 Ultrabook combo. I could fit in iPad use, but I choose not to.

Since you're being vague, just tell us all the options you have available. What phones or tablets can you get through the store thingy?

Another suggestion is to get whatever has the highest value, sell it, use that money to get something better for you.

PS read up about the nvidia Shield, better than a Vita maybe.

Tablets:

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8"

I had orignal note it was just horrible oh my god it was like using a overblown phone with difficulties in lugging around and a friend got ipad mini it was really a tablet felt like a tablet . If you have less choice then go for the biggest note with x86 in case of android tabs the bigger the better and x86 one wont have problem with apps and i think would be flexible as its x86 maybe? just my experience also do make a single post with whats available to you currently so you are better served with proper recomend

I don't really have any real experience with tablets...
I have used only for a little an iPad mini but just for a game, you know...

I was thinking of getting the 10.1 because of the x86 processor actually and try to do some tweaks on it. Maybe try to learn more about computers(as this is what I want to do in my future life) and maybe have something developed for this, but I am not sure if I will be able to do that. Not right now for sure :p

I have added the options I have on the previous post...

I'll stand by what I said earlier; these are some pretty poor choices to choose from.

Check the market for whichever one of these is the most expensive (I'm guessing its the Sammy Note 8).
Get that one, sell it asap as Brand New. I doubt you'll get €260 for it.
See what you've got left, and try to get something decent.
Put your Vita funds into it aswell, there's heaps of cheaper and better games on Android.

The Moto G, a cheap phone, is better than all the options you listed above.
A Nexus 5 (32GB) is that much better than the Moto G. Aim for the Nexus 5.
Affordable, Powerful, Hackable.

My $0.02

Keep us posted on what you got. :) also based on gsmarena's data, the 8 inch tablet has 1.5GB ram while the 10 only has 1GB. But I'd still go for the Note 8 if it's available.

PS don't get the Tab 3 7, even if it's the only one available. I got that for my mom and even Candy Crush brings it to a crawl.

I have seen that difference of the ram too!
Also the 8 inch has a better camera, not that I really care, but it is not bad to have it. But still they are at the same money...

Well I will not get that today... I will go the next week, so I have some time to think of that but I will post back for sure what I got ;)

Well, after some time finally I got a Galaxy S3 (GT-i9300) today! :D
Actually I am really happy with that right now, I will try to put the cyanogenmod 11 in it and see how it works!

I just feel a little wierd about my n900 because I love it so much, but it is not really functional for everyday use(broken usb, broken battery back, not functional speaker), so I had to buy a phone after all! Maybe if I will have some money on the future I will try to get a new n900 or maybe a n9! Who knows? ;D

But I will for sure keep my n900 for some modings and testings :D

Actually I am really happy with that right now, I will try to put the cyanogenmod 11 in it and see how it works!

I just feel a little wierd about my n900 because I love it so much, but it is not really functional for everyday use(broken usb, broken battery back, not functional speaker), so I had to buy a phone after all! Maybe if I will have some money on the future I will try to get a new n900 or maybe a n9! Who knows? ;D

But I will for sure keep my n900 for some modings and testings :D

Congrats!
Try this ROM, its an official PAC-ROM (the best of AOKP, ParanoidAndroid, CyanogenMod).
PAC in Black, is particularly nice.

You can even play with the phone's kernel, r00t access, its governor, its voltages (decrease it), its clockspeed (increase it), gpu clockspeed and voltage, user interface and so much more.

Do things that are on system first to get better stability, response and battery life out of them. But for additional features that such custom roms might leave out can be alleviated with... The Xposed Module!

There's heaps of little nifty stuff (my usual are XPrivacy, Adblock, Tinted Status Bar, XBlast Tools, GravityBox, Xposed Additions).

Try to go for a clean look and functionality, overboarding on features really has its toll on the user interface AND battery life.

SGS3 is a pretty modern phone... its not as good as the Nexus 5, but its definitely better than the Moto G.

Some apps that I recommend (PRO versions = little donation / big incentive to the devs):
SuperSU, Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, 500px, Apex Launcher, Kii Keyboard, SwitchR Gestures.

As for accessorizing, these look handy:
- This case
- This memory card
- This desk/bedroom dock
- This car cradle
- This car fast-charger
- This portable Mircast dongle
- This controller to use with the Sixaxis App and play games with this mount/diy to place the phone over the controller
- OR instead, this easier but less advanced solution, The MOGA pocket / PRO controller

And if you're interested in emulators...
...here's some that run fullspeed, with sound, no frameskip, and no problems:
PS One (FPSe)
Nintendo 64 (Mupen64)
Gameboy Advance (VGBA)
SNES (Super GNES)
Sega (iGensNoid)

...and here's more emulators which (aren't finished/smooth) but might be useful:
PSP (PPSSPP)
DS Lite (DraStic)
Dreamcast (Reicast)
Windows 98/DOS (Winulator)

Anyways, enjoy your new device

Thanks for these :D
I will definitely check these! Do you have any good tutorial for flashing from stock to custom rom(the one that you posted), and if you can make the link of the case because I am interested :D

For the PAC in black, I was thinking of something more colourful :p
but maybe I will give it a try....

Just a little note, check out Snes9x EX+, it is a completely free, fully functional SNES emulator, IMHO the best in the store - you can even do snapshots for free.

Me too, I've been playing Zelda on that emulator with an OTG cable and a generic Logitech game controller, and it works spectacularly. If you feel fancy you can even connect a Wiimote from inside the app via bluetooth!

I'm not affiliated with them, I just really like the emulator. :)

By the way do you know any good tutorial for install custom roms from stock? I mean I have found some, but most of them are for updating from custom roms...

You'll have to look for your particular device model (SGS3 comes in a few flavors).

Generally Cyanogenmod's wiki is a good place to start, it's probably best to use their method to first root, install a custom recovery and put CM on there, then move on to other roms.

Start with this page, find your particular model and follow what the model-specific page says.

Sorry, dunno what happened to the link. I generally like cases that are very slim and matte texture (ie no glossy plastic). Dunno, but this one could be okay:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-Sof...134b2df&_uhb=1

1-Download Odin for your computer (PC).
2-Make sure Samsung drivers are on your PC (either install Kies, or install the individual driver).
3-Install a Custom Recovery (such as ClockWorkMod etc etc)
4-Run Odin, then connect phone to PC
5-Turn phone off. Hold Vol Dwn and Home and turn on
6-Initiate phone into Download Mode
(Odin will confirm a connection in one of the ports)
6-On PDA; browse for the recovery file
7- Flash it on Odin (ie hit Start)
8-Let Odin work its magic, pronto!
...usually custom recovery also gives you root, busybox, and free version of Superuser App

...from here, most of the hard work is done!!!

**Remember to backup your EFS**

All you have to do is download what you want to flash (custom rom, custom kernel, custom mod/script) and put into your phone.
Turn the phone off. Hold Vol Up and Home, then turn it back on... it will boot to the custom recovery. In the recovery, just wipe the device and flash the file you downloaded. Voila!

Easy as pie

PS If you're every looking into buying another Android device make sure the bootloader is unlockable, the term used is "locked bootloader" --avoid those devices. Basically, the bootloader cannot be bypassed so it makes it extremely difficult to flash custom recoveries, and in turn can make it really difficult to obtain r00t. If you have a custom recovery, it means you can install unlicensed scripts to the system... which means you can run a script to obtain root.... but if you have root, it doesn't mean you can replace the stock recovery with a custom one as the system itself can't bypass the boot... if that makes any sense.
