Re: gamergate
I don't approve gamergate, and I don't approve Tropes against Women.
I see them as polar opposites of each other. I play CoD as much as Tomb Raider, and I like both games for what they are. Would I be offended if the next GTA had a playable female character.... not at all...!!! |
Re: gamergate
if it only were that simple, just wait for the critics to analyze tomb raider, she has too large boobs and is sexy, totally unrealistic expectation from a woman, obvious sexualization, you're a mysoginist for playing that

Re: gamergate
On a bit of a side note, this vid brought back instantly memory of shill threads: jolla not transparent enough. Just check how Will Wheaton (whoever that is) gets destroyed after calm/reasonably worded apology, it's never enough for them, starts around 22:00 mark:
(NSFW language) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0USsMKUFd4c Really glad jolla did not fall into this trap |
Re: gamergate
The moment I let a bunch of puerile gamers get more of my attention is the day that I probably will go totally "American" and shoot my way into infamy.
Simply put, I truly don't care to give any more attention to a group of rather marginalized people that add absolutely nothing to most of society. |
Re: gamergate
I get what you mean.
Some people/girls get oversensitive to subjects such as sexuality, feminism, culturism, etc etc. And its sad that the most vocal group is the one that gets heard the most. Do I agree that there is some female sexualism in Gran Theft Auto... well yes. Do I oppose it? No. Do I support it? Yes. That is the point of the game...to be semi-realistic while being over-the-top. There are Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender in the game too, so should those people boycott the game or be happy that they're included? Well, whatever, they have the right to aapprove and disapprove. I mean all James Bond characters are "sexy" men...should we complain to women that "regular" men are not like that and we feel violated?? A bit absurd if you agree. If women are pro-equal rights as I am, then they sure shouldn't have any problems with it. Otherwise, it would be favouritism towards them and that wouldn't be fair. With all this said I'm not saying games should all be targetting white males... I'm just saying there really isn't any problems but there iis room for improvement. Does that make me a typical white male misogynist? Well no. I'm not white. And you can assume I'm a male. I don't like the Tropes against women, for reasons like the analysis of Red Dead Redemption. Apparently prostitution is anti-women. Well, get over it, it was a big thing back in those times and the point of the game is to immerse the player into that western environment. If you took that out it really wouldn't affect the women players positively. But it would take a bit of that realism away for all. And those were the conditions in those days, so its nothing less than a history lesson. Should there be a game for women that has over the top direction and it portrays men as a sexual object or whatever they like? Sure.... I'd be interested in playing. In short... I don't like gamergate. I don't like TaW etc. They are both the same thing on opposite ends. And I wouldn't want drastic changes in games but more "women-friendly" material could be an improvement. This whole saga is no different to PETAs reaction to Pokemon.... I seriously doubt watching/playing Pokemon has made anyone more susceptible to animal abuse, like wtf peoples. |

Re: gamergate
ok, one interesting difference between issuing 12 articles with the same theme: 'gamers are dead' within 24h vs the tactics GG side uses, which is publicly discussing what they will do on a board or uncensored subreddit (open source anybody? they openly source ideas and cull the bad ones, this is so pretty to watch), maybe I'm just too addicted to internet drama, but even BBC got duped into a non-issue article supporting the supposedly anti-mysoginist narrative. Now blizzard's 'we are against harassment' is being plastered as anti gamergate? lolwut? mozilla with their openstandards initiative accidentaly let anti-GG piece slip in, offered rebuttal after backlash then published a public apology that they just want out :D this is crazy

Re: gamergate
Totally agree....very crazy.

This is really fascinating. The chan is pretty much a github of ideas, good ones get traction and evolve into ops, participation is free and anonymous (well, there are also ecelebs called tripfags and a lot of drama, bring your popcorn). I'm just a bit scared that stallman or linus or anyone else who's opinion I care about will come out as anti, just because of the soggy knees narrative being pushed by the 'well informed', mozilla got their lesson, blizzard narrowly avoided it, it's slippery |
Re: gamergate
Ach...all the greats in history said pretty much the same thing....
Can't please everybody... Now with even more peeps on earth...and a venue where (at worst) they think they can do or say things with impunity (that is changing...web-rage like road-rage is getting policed) and (at best) everyone but a select minority are offended by a simply harmless statement... Nope ...you are offending the caffeine-free coffee drinkers, you are being non-inclusive to the tea drinkers, forget the hipsters and yupps who insist on their latte's and pumpkin-frothed-whatevers, who in turn are by the nature of their desired ordered beverage are completely frowned on by any traditionalist beverage drinker... Yup...you may as well just travel back to the 1800's ... walk into Tombstone.... head immediately to the nearest bar... walk in and while everyone else is drinkin' whiskey... out loud to the bartender yell " I'LL HAVE A SASPARILLA , MY GOOD BARKEEP! "... It probably won't end well ...since there are always those with something to prove and always those who hate non-conformity. Good social experiment though.... should try it out...see how many take offense at your offer of coffee. Testing just how radioactive (toxic) the place really is by the response-time lag from when you mention it ... :D |

On a side note, not related to games industry, but to the 'blame it on misogynists': http://www.theguardian.com/commentis...anc-inequality Any women here on TMO can tell us how oppressed they felt by that shirt? This is crazier every freaking day, ffs. Let the SJWs land on a comet, all together hopefully, will rejoice |
Re: gamergate
I watched three videos on GamerGate and read two articles on it. On that same day, I completely quit on GamerGate.
My take on it: if women would like better representation of females in video games, then they should probably seek jobs in the video game industry and get involved in the creative process of video games (without causing a debacle like Mighty No.9). Seriously, the video game industry is a sausage fest. How could you NOT expect developers to have their stories biased towards their own gender? There's a decent chunk of developers that make an effort to have their stories balanced and not paint a specific picture of women or oversexualize them, and I truly applaud them for that. It takes a damn high level of talent to do that AND not make the story corny, not interesting, or otherwise boring. Misogyny is never a good thing, but painting a population as broad and diverse as gamers as "white, misogynistic males" is pretty hateful. And stupid. More stupid than hateful though. Oh, and the gaming "journalism" thing. Yeah, Gamespot, IGN, Koutaku, and Eurogamer are very good examples of why actual journalism in gaming is pretty much non-existant. Heh. Gaming jounalism. Nice oxy*****. |

Re: gamergate
I agree it is unnecessary but that is only my opinion.
There was a lengthy discussion on the filter some time ago and the verdict was that it should stay but be modified so that it does not give false positives. |
Re: gamergate
Knowing that the filter's parameters, as well as the concept of a profanity filter, are quite puritanistic, many people were convinced that it was for the better? Alrighty then.
