bitmap fonts
 

hi, i'm new to maemo (on a second hand n900).
i'm trying to figure out how to enable bitmap fonts.
i know they're rather going out of fashion in some circles, but some of us still love the hard certainty you get with a bitmap font.

i've installed emacs, and tried my old config with fave .otb format bitmap font copied into ~/.fonts/ and the characters just come up as squares...

so, first thought, bitmap fonts not enabled. second thought... it's not picking up ~/.fonts

any pointers massively appreciated. thanks. :)

ps, sry if wrong forum section for this question, still feeling my way around.
