Attacks from China Mobile?
 

Today I got an email:
"Fail*ed Login Noti*fic*a*tion on maem*o.org - Talk

Someone has tried to log into your account on maemo.org - Talk with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 223.87.77.30"


Is talk.maemo under attack from users at
China Mobile Communications Corporation ?


And thx for that notification!
That stuff is good and important.

I really didn't got the reason why they are keep doing this.

Are these *****s practicing hacking? Or just trying with simple password for fun? Why TMO?

I hope they can find some better things to do.

It's most likely to be a bot. I'm guessing it's either trying to brute force the password or it has a stolen username/password database from another site and is assuming that people reuse passwords across multiple sites. It's possibly targeting TMO for spamming purposes, I'm pretty sure TMO is not the only target.

About that. Let's just consider that for a moment. First, it is much easier to create a hundred new accounts than guess one password. Second, suppose you guess one. There are two possibilities. Either it is some troll's account or someone's respected. If the troll, no one would take the spam seriously. If respected, no one would believe it is genuine. Either way, it is a complete waste of time.

I suspect it is more about password reuse. Suppose I want wicket's eBay password. I could try to log in to eBay as wicket but I would very quickly get kicked out. So I try about 50 other websites first. If I get 5 attempts on each, that gives me 250 attempts. Disposable forum websites like TMO that no one cares about are the best for this purpose :)
