Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
Still no bitcoin handling ?
I am behind more than a single paywall, but I would be willing to send bitcoin if I knew for certain it would arrive. |

Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
BTW just for the record. I wasn't there yesterday at the #maemo-meeting but thanks to Win7Mac I am on the loop.
I understand we're short of about EUR 700. Unless I get a clear NO from here I will, at some point during the weekend, make a transfer/donation of EUR 500. Hopefully the rest will come from other sources. IF, and only if, the thing fails and we don't actually need the money in the end then I'll be happy if I get it back. IF, and only if, people donate in the end more than necessary (e.g. because of bitcoin, etc.) then I'll be happy if I get some of it back. Deal? |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
@reinob,
Respect! There is no way I can even approach your pledge, let alone match it. Not even if I took away one zero. But I can donate €20 as soon as I get to some money on or after 1st August. The only potential caveat is that I will be travelling between 1st and 11th and will be able to donate only if I happen to be in a WiFi zone. |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
@reinob, respect, that is eornomous!
I will also donate some more but cannot match you... |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
Huzzahs for reinob!

Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
It was previously suggested that only renewing the European trademark would be necessary. Are you still looking to renew US and Chinese trademarks or just the European one?
Would the European trademark be sufficient to protect the maemo.org domain name given that the TLD (.org) is US-based/controlled? In other words, if someone else registered Maemo trademark in the US, would they be able to seize the maemo.org domain name? Do we care if some Chinese company starts selling products (like the MeeGo Pad that runs Windows 8) under the Maemo name? |

The US TM already expired beyond grace period so a new TM registration would be required. Afaik, there's no plans (and no funds) to do so. Quote:

At least they wouldn't be allowed to sell it under the Maemo name in the EU. |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
@reinob
That is tremendous, enormous, unbelievable!!! And it is not the first time you spent such sums for Maemo. Not to speak for single individuals (including me :)). Deepest respect and thousand thanks. Will double my small (in reference to your donation) sum. So do I hope others will read and follow or step in anew, that you get as much back as possible! |

Whereas, in US, you can 'own' a TM without registratuon. This is because in US a TM is based on actual usage of a name. In fact, to register in US you must prove you are using the name. So, you are actually kind if protected in US, without registratuon, as long as you can show when (andbow) you use a name. |

Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
I would like to point out that it is not fair to let @reinob carry alone the major burden on this donation!
He has alone contributed 700 euros for the registration, which is a whopping 30% of the whole sum! I myself have only donated 160 euros (and of course considerable time and effort) and am going to top up my donations to 200 euros. So now I challenge you all to please donate to this important cause if you have the means to do so. |

I did this voluntarily and for sure don't want anyone to feel pressured by this. I know you mean it with the best of intentions, but really, as it has been mentioned before, donating is a voluntary thing (some people here may not want to renew the trademark) and obviously the contribution one wishes to make is a very personal decision. For all I care I've forgotten the money. I do hope we reach the goal, but if we don't, then so be it. Cheers and thanks again. |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
Well ..
If we don't make it... We do have enough time to save up for 2023... CA-NA-DA! CA-NA-DA! :D if we don't make it... I'd suggest a mass maemoan migration ... got plenty of room in this vast country to spare to set up "Maemo Nation" .. in the interim ..during the migration ...got some room at the house for fellow maemoan brethren ..just gotta gimme the sacred secret handshake to let you in the door is all... Hm ..honestly though...if we luckily squeak by ...perhaps the idea of starting to put literally ..pennies... into the pot in advance for it's future renewal... would mean we wouldn't scrambling when the due date came back around...nor would it be such a huge whopping "ouchie"... We should sanely prepare in advance.. |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
Ok Guys, I donated another 30 quids so I'm in now with 50 €.
Sorry, more I can't do. |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
Just donated 100 €. How much is missing now? I might be able to donate a little bit more if necessary.

Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration

Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
-Hmm...2023 until renewal in Canada eh?
-hmm...I wonder how much it will be for renewal? -Would anyone be able to shout out the Canadian renewal cost? -In Loonies preferably please... (I'm sure everyone other than fellow Canuck maemoans are really scratching their heads by now...and yes...the "Loonie" is our Canadian Dollar...named after one of our beloved birds...the Loon ..beautiful bird..with such a haunting call....that graces our Dollar coin...and yes ..Canadians are polite, kind, resilient, and yes quite crazy...so the Loonie does indeed fit...) -I'm thinking of setting up a trust / pool / donation-thing-a-ma-doo for the Canadian Maemo... got 8-odd years until it comes due here... plenty of time to throw pennies at it... cause I'll burn in a frosty hell before some rabid little corporate chipmunk yoinks it right out from under us in my backyard ... So ...yeah...anybody got an idea the cost in Canuck-bucks? |

Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
Hehe...
of course! The canadian intellectual property office.. ok...(time for very serious deadpan endso now...) looks like it is pretty cut and dried Item 7a... unless there are other bits needing to be covered I'm unaware of.. I took basic fundamentals of law back when I was a younger man.. ( ok I can't be totally serious right now...there was this girl I rrreeeaaalllyyy liked taking law see.. ;D )... but the finer points of trademark law I am not conversant with... ( I didn't get past 3rd year of law ...met this other girl in philosophy ;D )... All in all it seems very financially manageable even if the cost were double or triple that Item 7a cost of $350 CDN...as long as the monies are ready and present when expiration is imminent and renewal is necessary... otherwise I do see a foreshadowing in the various "Items" of it being far far more costly to try to apply from scratch for a tm if it lapses and then one wishes to reapply ...lotta paperwork and a lotta palms to grease then.... Hmmm..is the Canadian TM (let alone the other TM's elsewhere mentioned soon to come due) "ours" free and clear?.... is it under our ..hm.."auspices"? .. our control right now? Was it given over to us?.... or is it handled still by Nokia until 2023 and then it is up to us to wrangle the transition by pleading with whomever(s) and much shuffling of papers back and forth, and communications, and missed communications, and costs that we must deal with to get the Canadian ( or for that matter any of the other pending ) TM "actually" in our hands ? In which case once getting the "all clear to proceed..." then it would only be an additional $100 CDN to transfer the trademark. If the rights to the TM are already in the hands of Maemo.. then it should pose fewer hurdles and a much reduced cost when renewing the Canadian TM...that's for sure. If it is as clear-cut as it appears... then in 8 years it should be a smooth electronic filing to renew and a very affordable payment and all's good. I'm just ball-parking here...but even with palms to grease ( they call it bureaucratic civil servant filing, processing, etc...ach! well someone has to do all that fun stuff eh? ) and worst case scenarios... the most outrageous cost would be a couple of grand... but I frankly expect it to be between $500 CDN at absolute optimistically (rainbows shootin' outta butts here) best (it cannot get lower)... a pragmatic $1000 CDN ... and a possible extreme of $1500 CDN ...(all this is not knowing finer details of course...otherwise I could narrow things down more finitely) |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
I need to be a bit careful with finances at the moment as several major expenses have clocked up at once. All being well I'll try to chip in next week when I know where I stand, probably thursday or friday.
juiceme: feel free to pm me to remind me :p |

With the Maemo Brand Agreement that Nokia and Hildon Foundation have signed, all TM rights were transferred. But that's just an internal agreement. Officially, things remain as is in the registers. What matters is that the brand is protected (until 2023 in Canada), even if we don't claim ownership. Start saving pennys for that now... hmm, I guess by then most of us will be using other gadgets. Who knows... but if not, I still believe the money would be better spent for EU-renewal 2025. That's all we need, if any. |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
Ach!...kiddin' me? ..almost 10 years now and I'm still using my n8x0's....
20...40 years (if I'm not dead by then) ...I'll still be using my n8x0's and n900... But yea...I'll probably be using a new device too by then... Mah Neo900!!! Snap! Ooooooh yeah! hehe.... I'll definitely start puttin' pennies aside [and not just for the CDN TM ...but for the Euro TM as well] for the year 20_ _ ... Especially after the obvious potential you just mentioned that there may possibly be even fewer of us left by then here at maemo...which is entirely possible. |

NOTICE!
We have received enough funds for the ongoing EU Trademark refreshing, and currently need no more donations towards this cause any longer! Thanks for everybody, the community spirit we have is awesome :D We managed to raise 3451.43 euros in just a bit over 5 weeks time, which I think is marvellous! |

Well, there are 2 cases to consider;
With both kind of donations, the amount you see on the column "sum in EUR" is the final one we have on the account. |
Re: [Announcement] Fundraiser for "Maemo" Trademark registration
There have still been 2 latecomers to the TM donation :D
Below is the current donation status. And as has been stated, this donation goal has been reached, so no more donations are needed. If you want to donate to General Maemo related causes, please state so in your donation message! Code:
