Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
August is here along with a new camera phone competition. This time it's spirals. juiceme says:
"I'd like to propose a subject that encourages geometric/shape/form pictures and good composition. The rules are: Photos must be taken during this month Photos must be taken by the posting member Photos must be taken with a camera phone Users post only one photo per entry Users can change the entry only once Users must name the phone they used (so I could include it for voting) Last three days of this month are for voting Here are some examples, now it will be a lot easier getting a good shot. :) Last month's theme |
Interesting theme, juiceme.
grob on N9 does not like the Light Stalking website - or vice-versa. Opera works better in this case.Firefox better still, but there's a popover that I can't quite drag the 'x' into view to close. I do have a subject in mind. Will see if I can make it work . . . Looking forward to seeing this month's contributions. |

Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I appreciate the effort put into this photo but it's less of a photo and more of a creation. You could've at least put it on a different background. And it doesn't have to be that specific. :)

From a philosophical viewpoint you might be right but in that case all shown photos here are a product of some creation, either of mankind or in case of the flower of god, and the latter might be a creation of our mind, and our mind might be a creation of god .. philosophical spirals .. i give up, you're right :D |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I think a still life photo is well within the rules of the competition. The genre is fully accepted in the art world, and in painting its history goes back millennia..
|
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I haven't said that. Every photo in this thread is a still photo as a matter of fact. But what bothers me is if someone is going to prepare and arrange something and take a picture of it, it could've been done a bit better. It's not enough to just make a shape using some objects and snap a photo, it's more about finding a good angle, having a better background...

Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
Half-Life,
Your first post sounded like you were challenging the validity of BluesLee's entry. Apparently robthebold read it that way too, so it's not only me. Your second post sounds like you are questioning its quality, which is a completely different thing. FWIW, I also think that the photo is well within the rules as well as this month's topic. Whether it is good or not, well that is up to the voters to judge. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
Here are the entries all lined up for voting.
1.Half-Life_4_Life - Huawei Y300 https://farm1.staticflickr.com/637/2...01db3229_o.jpg 2.Acidspunk - Xiaomi Mi3 http://s16.postimg.org/lg4p48hfp/IMG...819_161444.jpg 3.chenliangchen - BlackBerry Passport http://www.liangchenchen.com/wp-cont...0015931981.jpg 4.lyluushalyluri - Nokia N9 http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psritwirth.jpg 5.robthebold - Nokia N9 http://i.imgur.com/DVBAeR7.jpg 6.BluesLee - LG Nexus 5 http://s16.postimg.org/cum5ewdtw/20150825_020.jpg BTW, BluesLee and the rest, I never questioned the validity of the photo as it fits the rules and fits the theme, but it kinda annoys me when some effort is put into a photo it ends up looking kinda bland. And I'm a photographer, I'm not making money from it but I truly love photography and I just want to motivate all of you to take some shots and improve. EDIT: I vote for Acidspunk. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
BluesLee's photo does not show correctly here.
Nonetheless, I vote for 6.BluesLee Appreciate the idea and creation. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I'll vote for #1, Half-Life_4_Life. I like the spiral shadows!
|
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
# 1 Half-Life_4_Life
|
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
@chenliangchen,
the problem is not in your receiver. It was my understanding that Half left out BlusLee's photo on purpose. I do not quite share his enthusiasm that censoring his effort is somehow going to "inspire" him but hi-dee-ho, Half makes the rules, not me. EDIT: Turns out I was wrong. Mea culpa. On a completely unrelated topic, I really like Half's entry. Very nice and sharp macro with good light and play of shadows. Shame on the background though, that somehow spoils the effect. Therefore my vote goes to #5, robthebold. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I don't understand, I copied the full photo from the site at which the thumbnail linked to.
BTW. pichlo, I really wanted to find a spiral staircase. :) |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I'm going with 2 Acidspunk.

You could instead try to link directly to the jpg entity on Postimage.org, which seems to be publicly viewable. I'm seeing this link as: http://s16.postimg.org/l047d222s/20150825_020.jpg or, http://s16.postimg.org/l047d222s/20150825_020.jpg EDIT: BTW, I think Postimg.org may be trying to fake people out by placing a ".jpg" extension on non-jpeg files. :( That, or using some magic to detect if people are linking directly to .jpg files, and redirecting them. Either way, bad website behavior... EDIT2: Yeah, now that I look at it, my link looks substantially the same as your link, other than the randomly generated subdirectory name. So Postimg.org must be doing something annoying. :( |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I vote for # 1 Half-Life_4_Life. Really nice photo. With a plain background it would have looked even better.
I don't think the flower (5. Robthebold) has anything to do with spirals. There are circles yes, but no spirals. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
Fibonacci spirals in nature
I wanted to find a sunflower or coneflower where the spirals were more obvious, but I struck out. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I meant to take a picture of a drop of blood (full of DNA "spirals") but had barely time to breathe this month. Maybe some other time ;)
Come to think of it, robthebold's was the only entry containing actual spirals. All the other ones were helixes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helix I do realize that some languages do not make the distinction. Including colloquial English ;) |

I didn't know this as well. And BluesLee's photo is displaying proprely for me, I don't know what else I could do.. BTW, thanks for the votes on my entry. :)
I've just arrived at the seaside and will report back the voting results later. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
Wait, what? Actually, I forgot that this month had 31 days. :o
So voting is still open. |

Everyone has seen the photo by now probably and the rest are seeing it fine. I think there is no need anymore for that.
I might include in the rules to avoid that site, thanks for reminding me. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I'm going with #2, Acidspunk.
|
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
The winners are:
1st place - Half-Life_4_Life and Acidspunk, 3 votes each (Copernicus, saponga, The Wizard of Huz, Half-Life_4_Life, robthebold, imaginaryenemy) Captured with a Huawei Y300 https://farm1.staticflickr.com/637/2...01db3229_o.jpg Captured with a Xiaomi Mi3http://s16.postimg.org/lg4p48hfp/IMG...819_161444.jpg 2nd place - BluesLee and robthebold, 1 vote each (chenliangchen, pichlo) It's a shame to get so few votes, only three entries were voted for... I will update the history of TMO camera phone competitions and PM Acidspunk so that we can make a new theme for this month. |

bummer, I was writing up a commentary on each of the entries classed as plus/minus... Too bad there was a personal matter last week that disrupted this and I could not get it done in time  |

Ah pichlo, sorry, I had only woken up a few mins before I counted the votes, now I'm back from the beach. :)
I will fix it now. |
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
Acidspunk, where are you? I'm waiting.
|
Re: Camera phone competition August 2015:"Spirals"
I don't know why he isn't answering but we have to move on. Since I share the first place with him I will decide on the new theme for this month.
