Sure - but that was one of the reasons for the delay. Jolla decided that they didn't like the original included display. It isn't that they designed in that 'significantly better fully laminated display' at the outset.

The original display was totally ****. There, I said it.

Trust me, you all are better off.

I would be 'better off' if they sent me a piece of toast.

But thanks for your honesty

As all the issues with the fragile N900 USB connectors have shown - sturdy USB connectors are a must! Definitely not something to underestimate.

  1. They don't have the time.
  2. They would rather spend their time doing something else.

1. is often the consequence of 2. Personally, I would rather spend time maintaining my own projects than contributing to NEMO. Also, I don't have much interest in the future of mobile, because it is clearly heading away from the idea that brought me to this community in the first place: the pocket computer. I have no interest in smartphones or tablets (as in the fondleslab tablets).

You, but i wasnt referring strictly to you, and when you read so much comment of people complaining about open sourcing sailfish because we really like that...and saying that opensourcing it would take so much people to contribute..sorry but for me is really a contraddiction seeing that, an os very similar to sailfish and completely non commercial and opensource, hasnt anyone who gives a fuack. Saying i have no time is only an excuse, since they find so much time to post complaining and disappointing comments here. in addiction you can contribute in different manners. I am not able to code but i give my enthusiasm, spread this project and make donations. So we can exclude the first option. As well, we can exclude the second, since they really like sailfish and otherwise they shouldnt waste so much time posting about it if they dont care about it. the conclusion is easy:
too much, as in real world, want things just ready to use, free and well manteined. they are not going to waste effort in helping what they seems to like, they only want to enjoy it. And of course, if somehow the product isn't free, isn't open, or isn't perfect, ones who have spent their time on it are to blame. Too many directors, too little workers.

I saw the picture of the Aigo back when you all grabbed your pitchforks, and I saw an identical design, sold only in China, six months after the Jolla fundraiser. As I said before, selling the design in a country they weren't selling the tablet in was a good fundraising step. Didn't they announce several months after the campaign that they were withdrawing it in China due to regulatory problems? That must have been the trigger.

It's a nice weight and thickness. Feels really sturdy. The screen is really sharp and clear, especially when watching films. Battery life is good. Lastu case finishes it off really well - cool stand and when folded back the back of the leather makes a nice soft backgrip.

Oh and it runs Sailfish. I can mess around with the system as much as I like. There aren't many apps in the store yet, but all the essential Android stuff is in the Aptoide one, and most native stuff that wasn't in the store or openrepos I cloned from github and built myself.

I don't disagree: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=359

I must say, though, that you are coming across as more of a director than a worker. A worker doesn't tell others what they should do.

Re: Marc Dillon left Jolla

don't take me for a fool. i am only remarking what i personally find a contraddiction. and waiting for explaination just in order to understand. I am no one , i am neither into nemo mobile team.
I am not saying what some company should done with its money, i am only saying what i think people should to just avoid being in contraddiction with themselves. I was trying to understand their reason, inviting all them to explain it to me. maybe i am just missing something so i would like to understand.

to sum up: saying what Microsoft should (have) done without any role or investment into it is being a "director". saying what someone has to say just to not contraddict with action what they previously have stated, is completely different.
indeed i have so much times told that jolla abused of open source and soon words, and i can blame them for that. Of course i cannot do the same for what was their strategy/ decision in the market..

edit: i read your linked posted and i find that we agree on that. i quote every word you said

Well, Marc has gone quiet since Spring, Stefano was tweeting the last 4-5 months about startups only. A split between h/w and s/w divisions was announced during summer, plus delays for the tablet, while updates were hardly improved core apps, and communication was scarce. Even slush last month, was talking about ... adventures. Not good signs I think, but equally it does not make sense for them to go public.

What I dont understand is:

https://blog.jolla.com/jolla-tablet-operations/

They say that the first wave is sent... I was in the first wave, got NOTHING. Also, if you read the post, it also shows that they actually many tablets ready to be shipped....

Is the shipping costs just high? I really really dont understand it.

IF they do NOT have the tablets at all... Then I call this a fraud.
And I'm sure there are some laws for this either.

Of course fraud is forbidden by law. But this isn't fraud. You decided to invest in a product which, apparently, will never see the light. That's the risk of an investment. You won't see your money back.

Fraud was when they took them money. It's a legal fraud. Say one thing and do another while taking money and hide behind some 3rd party rules. If not fraud, then it's a lie. What about take money via shop when you know you couldn't deliver even the first tablets? Could be fraud. Or just bad behavior.

Hopefully they tablets shows up eventually, and Jolla can pay lastu and the employees gets rehired and we live happily ever after.

More like there is no one in the building to package and ship them.

Although I doubt there are many ready to be shipped. Maybe tens, maximum hundreds. Not thousands. The vast majority has not been produced yet.

You cannot compare crowdfunding with online shopping.
Crowdfunding is not buying a product, it is investing in a company and expecting a product in exchange. Sometimes your investment is lost.

But: Jolla did a very bad job on communication and in my opinion producing a tablet was not the best idea in the first place. Also the decline in lead personnel was a sign since long now that Jolla is declining and now finished as it seems.

As for the crowd funding (which Iam part of) no, that is not Fraud. And I have actually told Jolla I changed my 'order' to donation, not expecting anything, in this round.

But, there was one last round. Where some placed a pre-order. That, is another situation, and, if it can be somewhat proven, even the slightest, that Jolla knew that these would likely not be delivered , that, qualifies as fraud, definitely. Of course, given that money was paid by who orderes,.

billranton 2015-11-24 08:14

Re: Marc Dillon left Jolla

Given the pattern of pre-order and delays, it's reasonable to assume that the trouble with the next financial round started around September time. The extra pre-ordered were sold to increase the size of the production batches and save costs. These people took a huge risk to try to make Sailfish work - of course they meant to deliver at the time they were sold. I don't know why anyone would think otherwise unless they specifically meant to attack these guys.

Please remember that the alternative to all these claims of fraud is that a bunch of people are on the brink of bankrupcy after having their funding pulled. Everything they've built over the last few years, even a decade for some, could come tumbling down. Imagine how it must feel to see a bunch of your supposed fans rant on the internet about how you always intended to rip them off. Honestly, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

If the money does come in, that the tablet deliveries get priority over the refunds mentioned in that last blog post. Tom should have to wait at the back of the queue to get his $242 off George Bailey.

@billranton

I totally agree with you. But facts doesn't change.

My personal stand is, the best way we can help make Jolla get back on its feet's are being supportive. And don't start asking refunds, charge backs etc. Etc.

oooh.
ouch.
that is one movie with probably the most desperate bank run depicted.
I love "it's a wonderful life"
watch it every x-mas.
but boy that scene sure depicts a grim historical time.
I'd hope no alternate device company has to go through anything like that.

Thank you for your comments, as a Privateer for Jolla, who has been with the company from the beginning. If it came down to a choice of being paid or shipping tablets to you guys. I'd choose shipping the tablet out every time. I am also sure I wouldn't be the only sailor that would say that.

It is indeed hard listening to some of these scathing remarks and not being able to give much reassurance. I can however say that everyone in Jolla has been trying their hardest, despite financial difficulties, to make the tablet product the best we can. And what everyone really needs is your understanding, support and compassion. It's these characteristics we thrive on, which we do get from the majority of the community, and is needed to drive us forward, no matter how stormy the seas may be.

He has alot of good points of running a startup in it; it appears clear that his belief (at the time of recording, at least) is the tablet campaign will be a success.
