Keep us updated, please.

Also, do you get to keep the 'evaluation' device now that the final product has arrived?

The phone's surface on the golden top and bottom parts look uneven in the picture, like a bad paintjob. What kind of material are those?

Does it have a screen?
I am sorry, it is always the back (or what) I see!

Because the screen is normal whereas that back is sure to capture somebody's attention.

I still think its gaudy. But I'm definitely not the target audience for that styling.

Regardless, thanks to this thread the updates are still ongoing.

Re: Sailfish on Turing Phones?

I'd prefer just black or grey. The red camera accent I could live with but the rest is a bit over the top. Maybe change the red and blue angled pieces to just plain gold without the pattern.

It's a bit too much of a bling-bling to my taste. I suppose there are people though who want to show around the top-expensive device they have bought...

What's the coloured parts made of, the TP's supposed to be made of full-metal alloy so are those bits painted on it or some kind of plastic attachment to the device?

I doubt anyone wants to show around that phone in real life, unless it's real gold :D however, if anyone wants to do a SciFi remake from the 80s, this phone would play the part perfectly...

But if they actually deliver something soon, it's a achievement by itself, despite colors.

This.
I was surprised to see another evaluation unit.
Sure, you can paint it black and say they do not deliver on the final product and still very few users going public.
But those backers who get "something" are genuinely rewarded with some unicorn hardware that will make up for theyr investment if they resell it.
Would be nice to know how many of them there actually are.

I’m loving the phone's look. What's most noticeable about using this phone as compared with some others you’ve owned or used?

Apparently we have a Sailfish Community Member / Collector who is not reading here but owns a Turing Phone!

I invited him to our completely sane little speculation party.
He posted a question on TJC recdently.

Yes I get to keep these phones as well as the finished product

Did you use Google to translate that sentence from Chinese to illustrate the point? ;)

Article in Android Headlines about the guy in Taiwan that got his Turing Gaudy Glaedr delivered. Points off for using the term "very unique".

Very nice of you to follow my "invite" :D Thanks a lot!
A warm welcome to TMO!

I am delighted you rate it "awesome".
Seeing you own nearly all Sailfish capable devices, your judgement is kind of heavy weight imho!

Did you try or even manage to get a ssh connection somehow?
Is "developer mode" available? :p
We all are a little sceptical with turings "security by obscurity" attempt and some experienced testing and simple clarification would be extremly welcome!

Here is your first turing phone form ebay if you missed the preorder :D

Price has risen by only 500$ which is to be expected due to shear awesomeness.

My turing phone should be with me at the end of the week. I have owned every Maemo and Jolla device so planning to do a full review with that in mind. I won't be comparing with iphones and androids as I will already know how to actually use it!

This would be a very welcome approach. Keep us updated.

Re: Sailfish on Turing Phones?

My turing phone just arrived. Wow, It feels incredible in the hand and I reckon you could throw it off a skyscraper and it would survive, it's that solid. It's currently downloading 2.0.4.14 to install. 2.0.3 is a bit stuttery on the device, but haven't had chance to play with it much. The display is very very nice indeed, there's barely any bezel at all, so it looks really really nice and responds very well to swipes. The phone came with a glass screen protector that fits perfectly (ie millimeter perfect) and two charging cables (thank god, because I'm not sure how difficult it is going to be to buy spares for the phone!).

I plan on doing a full review etc, so let the questions begin and I will respond to as many as I can in the review.

Re: Sailfish on Turing Phones?

Well, unfortunately not off to a good start. The phone won't recognise any inserted SIM card (even brand new one), it won't complete the update on wifi (just hangs) and I can't enable developer mode either or update any store apps(again just hangs). The phone also doesn't seem to recognise microsd cards either, so I am thinking there must be a hardware fault :(

Also every second reboot it goes in to recovery mode (but a subsequent boot, it boots properly)

Shame because the phone has potential.

Jolla had problems with their update server and many people had problems with updating phones.

They fixed that and it should work now.

yes!, the update is downloading now. I hope it fixes the sim card problem....

mosen 2016-11-16 09:19

Re: Sailfish on Turing Phones?

I guess you tried cleaning your sim card with alcohol and checked wether the contacts are touching it when inserted? :o

pichlo 2016-11-16 09:22

Re: Sailfish on Turing Phones?

I would not blame wormdrummer if not. I would not expect to have to do that on a $1k+ device.

wormdrummer 2016-11-16 10:00

Re: Sailfish on Turing Phones?

I went and got a brand new sim from my carrier and that doesn't work and it doesn't work after the update either. Bummer, I think it must be hardware related. I also tried my wife's sim from another carrier and it didn't recognise either.

The phone is nice and snappy on 2.0.4.14 and the fingerprinted reader works very well. One other problem is noticed is that Exchange active sync is not available as Turing haven't bought the licence.

wormdrummer 2016-11-16 10:41

Re: Sailfish on Turing Phones?

looks like its a common theme for the sim card not working and damaging the sim card. Lots of people in the reddit "support" thread are complaining of the same thing with no response from turing. Bummer.

Ouch, so sorry to hear this. Hope it goes well, and if you have any other findings, please post. And pics!

PS Thanks for sharing your experience.
