Satellite Tracking?
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone has used the N800 for satellite tracking. Last I heard Java runtime 6 was still not running on the N800, is this still the case (I'm waiting for a replacement N800 at the mo)? If JRE 6 was running, I could use Satscape for Java (www.satscape.co.uk). Regards, Paul ~~~~ |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
yea, i'd like to see a sat tracker for maemo also.
maybe someone might kindly port over petittrack: http://www.qsl.net/n1vtn/petittrack.html might fit your needs? seems like it would be simple to do considering it's on the Zarus......right? any thoughts or help on this anyone? Thanks! matt |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
petittrack looks interesting, but it's a Qtopia application at the moment. I haven't seen it before so at least I'll have a look at it (I don't know Qtopia at all).
Friends of mine are doing some porting/testing work in this area, so things might happen there at some stage - albeit that stage could be way up in the future. In the meantime I'll dig out my old Zaurus and try the petittrack - thanks for the link! |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
no problem - i stumbled on this awhile ago just surfing around.
in general (i'm not any type of linux coder..though i aspire to be...) would it be "easy" to port stuff from Qtopia to maemo? both being Arm processors, seems like thats half the battle! -Matt, KF6WEY <- and that's why i'm interested! |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
I've used Petit track on an Zaurus before to track "certain" sats I needed to use in Bosnia years ago.
Worked really well, allowing me to input my GPS grid so I could find the proper azimuth and elevation to aim the antenna and a compass and protractor. Would be nice if someone could port it over from QT to Maemo/Hildon. Throw in bluetooth GPS capabilities and it's a near-perfect application for some people. |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
bump
Anyone have an update on a satellite tracking program for Maemo? |

save the ssazelm page to local file as it's been done entirely in javascript, and then you can use it offline |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
Well, my humble Mephemeris application has the ability to plot the position of satellites, along with typical stars, planets, etc.. It was not designed for that purpose, so doesn't have a nifty real time/rapid refresh mode that you might desire/expect:

Re: Satellite Tracking?
Thanks for the link. I installed Mephemeris, but haven't read up on it yet. Would it be possible to grab the Keplerian elements such as http://www.celestrak.com/NORAD/elements/amateur.txt and plot their footprints over the globe similar to:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/files/li...212/0212f3.png ? EDIT: I got InstantTrack running with exceptional performance via DOSbox. Now I can view birds as they fly over the map: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/instanttrack/itcyl.gif |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
Pocketsat+ for Palm works fine in GVM.

Well, I think it would be neat if Mephemeris could do the 'satellite track plotting' that you are looking for, and perhaps it will some day. Currently, it was primarily designed to show the sky from the perspective of a local observer -- not for the entire globe. However, I will consider your suggestion! :) On the other hand, now that you got InstantTrack working, maybe you are OK? |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
TA-t3 - Thanks for the tip, I was considering Pocketsat+. Can GVM apps connect to the internet through the N8xx? I had to write a simple script to grab the keps for InstantTrack.
darethehair- Thanks for hearing me out, I understand your program is targeted towards a different audience. InstantTrack works fine, except DOSBOX often goes 'crazy' when you use the Fn key: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...&postcount=308 Thanks for chiming in and contributing to the maemo community. |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
GVM apps. can reach the Internet.
With PocketSat+ though I prepare the data outside of it, just as I did in the past on my desktop computer - I download TLE with a script, a Perl script then translates it into a memo .pdb file, which I install in GVM (previously I would install it on my Palm via bluetooth). |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
Thanks for the info. It seems the system to download GVM is broken, no email with a download link comes. Can someone upload the deb for me somewhere?

Re: Satellite Tracking?
Thanks! So I'm up and running, but still can't figure out how to get my keps which are now in .pdb format over to Garnet VM. When I try to use install, the .pdb file is greyed out.
Edit, I guess the txt to pdb program I used has issues, but I found many sites already have the keps in pdb format http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftp/keps/current/amsat.pdb |

Re: Satellite Tracking?
Trying to build this under Maemo 4 Diablo. Any one know where to find the following missing goods?
Quote:
Or am I going about this the wrong way? Not familiar with QT. Should I be using qt3 or qt4? Is Maemo 4 okay, or does only Maemo 5 have the proper qt support? Pocketsat works fine, but updating the keps is a real hassle under garnet. With petittrack, one could easily script wget to nab latest keps before starting. |

Re: Satellite Tracking?
Yeah, it won't be hard to make the same script regex through the TLE file and slice out only the elements you want. I'll post my script if I ever get petittrack running on Maemo 4 / Diablo.
When I have time, I'll look into getting QTopia in my scratchbox. Others seem to have gotten it to work http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...&highlight=QPE . By chance would someone already have this development environment already setup for Maemo 4 (or 5) and willing to give a quick crack at it? http://www.qsl.net/n1vtn/petittrack_1.2.0.tar.gz |

I appreciate your work and I am sure other sat-spotters and hams will too, I just don't have room for scratchbox in the / of my machine. |

Re: Satellite Tracking?
Whether you get something working or not there should probably be new thread or a project page so more people can get their hands dirty getting this working.
|
Re: Satellite Tracking?
Sorry, other projects have kept me from allocating time to this one. Can you make a post asking someone with scratchbox setup for Maemo4 or Maemo5 with Qtopia/QPE to tackle this? I'll hop in and contribute where applicable from there.

Re: Satellite Tracking?
I think it would have been better if you posted it in the developer forum, as it quickly got pushed off the first page in this section. This is also more of a consumer section, vs the producers in Development.

I have been using Gpredict with Debian but it is more for desktop systems and is not as feature rich as Petittrack when used portably. Gnome Predict is more suited for running an automated radio for doppler freq and servo aiming the antenna. |
Re: Satellite Tracking?
The dev forum is here. I've been pretty busy and haven't made any progress with Qtopia/QPE.
PocketSat+ under Garnet VM is the only maemo solution I've found, but updating the keps is a chore. |
