Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 6 of 7)

So far my biggest complaint using the N900 this week is a combination of my mistake 4 years ago and AT&T's poor 2G service. When I moved back then, I got a new number local to this area with a nationwide MVNO. I could have specified that I wanted a SIM with either AT&T or T-Mobile service, and I didn't specify.

For the N9, this is no problem. It works equally well at 3G on either of those networks. AT&T, however, is GSM-only for the N900 due to the bands they use vs. the phone's support. So data is limited to EDGE at best. And on top of that AT&T is phasing out 2G service in the US, so coverage is getting increasingly spotty and voice service quality is getting worse where there is still service.

But it's still been fun using the beast this week. When I sit down to watch videos on the Kodi box, I pull the N900 out of my pocket and it can transmit IR to wake up the amplifier and TV set, and also control the media center over wifi. I don't need to hunt up all the necessary remotes to get everything going. And the Palm emulator gives me access to my all-time favorite shopping list program: Handyshopper.

This is just occured to me. While "there's an app for that" approach is for 99,999997% userbase, for N900 owners it is "there's an apt- for that" instead.

Last day in paradise. Day 7 of 7. Going for a long drive today. Will see if n900 gps can keep up with car's build-in satNav.

So, end of this 'special week'!
Not so special for me as I still use it as my main phone (since 6 years, with third HW). ;)

Carrying around my N9 with me most of the time for some free internet, SMS (calls) and -I am embarassed- WhatsUp for some sport groups!
With Symbian discontinued I should switch the N9 to one of my Jollas but I keep carrying N900 and N9!!! And answer WazzApp only at home. (call me whatever you like)

This is an yearly event but that doesn't mean we can't have The-mighty-winter-classic-n900-week. Feel free to set it up. Around December?

Any time in the winter would be fine for me. December is ok.

This kind of events will keep the n900 alive.

Everybody, freeze! Drop your n900!

The week is almost over. Thank you all who participated in this event, either by using it during this week or as your daily driver.

n900 is still a solid device. :D

Over and out

If this thread revived good feelings towards this great phone and you are a member that wants to tinker with one or can use a 2nd device let me know. I still have one for free (you only need to pay for shipment from the Netherlands). It is not in mint condition: LCD is discoloured and telephone function is broken but I am sure it will be fine for developing, testing or just having some nostalgic fun.
I prefer to give it to a developer, but anyone that contributed something to this community can PM me.

BTW. I consider posting stuff and helping people a contribution :)

Bump!

We need a new owner for this n900 before next year's Mighty n900 week...

I don't see how a 13-year old kid would have a phone that costed 565€ only a year ago back then!

I had a N95 back then, boy I loved that thing! Traded it in for a Xperia X1 and never looked back at having a non-HWKB phone. Fast forward to May 2011 and I got myself a N900 for 85€, and never looked back.

peterleinchen 2016-08-08 20:56

Re: The Mighty N900 Week 2016(Day 7 of 7)

Yeah, going from N95 (if that would have had fluent touch already (not like N97), maybe Nokia devices would be still alive?) to the N900 was a huge step.
But worth every effort!

My third N900 is lost in the post ):

First N900: Still have it, screen is peeling and camera doesn't work (I took the module out one too many times I think. Either a problem with the contacts on the board, or the module is dead and I can't find them on ebay anymore ): )

Second N900: Current daily phone

Third N900: Brother had it for awhile, not being used. He had it sent to me a few months ago but they sent it to an address that doesn't exist, don't know the tracking number or when they sent it. So post can't find it for me ):

That's no good. No return address on it, I suppose. Don't lose hope on it being found. Thanks for you work on 'Translink Schedule'.

I'm a complete novice, just started to get a taste of using back-end commands.

I got my first n900 last year, complete with box & accessories. The first smartphone... I think I've ever touched. My Mum brought home a new Android about a month later, although faster, it's fairly compromised and no where near the league of the n900.
I got a 2nd one with the keyboard backlit issue.
Just bought a 3rd one with OtterBox cover.

Overkill...... I know.... Will set them up as daily drivers for my brothers. Can't wait to have some spare time to fiddle & use them to their full potential.

Bah........ someone bought it from under me. Told the seller I should get to a bank on Wednesday while picking up my brother, Mum did it instead. Was planning to go tomorrow on the way to uni.

Who ever bought....... I forgive you..... Was it anyone here?

Edit: The guy who bought it posted it on eBay saying, he hasn't got time to use it. Was a "Buy it now", at the same price he bought it (I would've paid). I bought it with an unexpected coupon of 15% discount. :D

The N900 itself is not to blame.
It is AT&T shutting down GSM services (pushing customer to use/buy 3G/4G phones).

Btw: What about CDMA network?

AT&T requires two bands simultaneously for 3G on their network, of which the N900 only supports one. T-Mo, OTOH works fine with 3G on the N900. They've also promised to keep supporting 2G (GSM) through 2020 -- at least for data. This keeps a bunch of burglar alarms, lowjack devices, bathroom scales, etc. from prematurely dying Next month (the cell-net of things?)

And the whole fiasco is partly my fault. I moved just before getting an N9 and I got new phone service at that time.

(This was a mandatory change -- while my previous carrier had nationwide roaming coverage, they only had physical "stores" -- mall kiosks, really -- in one state. And while I could pay my bill online, if anything went wrong with the process -- like my credit card co. issued me a new number or expiration date -- I had to get myself physically to a retail location with photo ID to fix it.)

So I went with an MVNO that had service available on both T-Mo and AT&T. If I'd been smart and looked a little harder in that crystal ball, I'd have tried to get a T-Mo SIM when I set up the account. But it didn't seem like that big a deal. If I put the SIM in the N900 it still worked at 2G speeds, and outside the house I rarely did anything but call, text and sometimes check email -- no problem, right?

As to changing providers (or at least trying to get another SIM issued with T-Mo service), that would be the best idea. But it's a PITA, and it's something that I can put off, so I've never done it.

Sounds to me they have made it delibrately really difficult to find out what's the most suitable/affordable plan and provider.
Smells like a cartel/collution to me!

Changing providers or data/voice plan is a breeze in Finland; for example when you switch to a different carrier you can keep your existing phone number if you want to.

Fortunately we do have phone number portability (for now) in the US. But every other part of customer service is generally awful. And yes, it's almost a sport among businesses to create the most deceptive and impenetrable pricing schemes possible.

BTW, I intentionally decided against keeping my old number. I could have kept it, but there are still advantages here to having a number local to the area you live in. Most of all though, getting rid of the previous number was advantageous because I kept getting bill collections robocalls for people I'd never heard of. And even the occasional human agent: "Well, do you know his new number," one live collector asked!

I doubt that you can still buy anonymus prepaid cards in the US.

Even here in Europe, there are few countries that still sell prepaid cards, without asking for ID

Last time I bought prepaids (admittedly it's few years back) there was no funny business with ID's or anything. I just went to a local R-kioski (our ubiquous brand of news-stand/small-items/snacks type corner outlet) and bought a simcard.
I doubt it'd be pretty much like that today too.

Other countries being worse than the UK on citizens' privacy matters? That sounds almost hard to believe. Maybe it is time I went out and bought 20 SIM cards while I can.

Hi.
Here in Spain you are also asked to 'register' to buy a prepaid card. The excuse being the terrorist attacks back in 2004. I got one back in 2014 and had to provide credentials.
BTW, I missed the last mighty N900 week: Are there any plans for the next one? I have finally found the required SIM adapter...

I would propose the Mighty Week to be in one of the folowing two weeks of December (week 50 or week 51).
Since the week should be from Monday to Sunday the next two weeks seem a good choice.
