Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
Jolla does not have many apps. So by not including the app store from Android or a way to use Android apps, Jolla will be limiting the size of their customer base to possibly only people who follow Jolla?

I was under the impression that Alien Dalvik is included?

But they'll not include the Play store. They offer Aptiode from their store instead. Otherwise you might be able to unofficially install an old version of Play store on the device if you want to. |

Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
check also the yalp store, it provide access to the apps out of the play store. The majority of german local apps are only available via play store and not any other android market. Therefore, i cant always follow the opinion of some guys here.

Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
What is stopping to install play store? I remember it was not a problem with jolla 1, just needed some handywork.
|
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
There is no problem installing Play Store (it's preinstalled on Aqua Fish), but there is a problem downloading or updating applications as Google is excluding us.
I removed all gapps yesterday in the evening. I found out, all apps I'm using do not need the Google services. I'm fine with it. If they don't let me install apps they don't deserve it to have their services on my phone. |
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
So its end of June; no announcment, not even an announcement about an announcement. Public Relations at its worst.

check the minutes of the collaboration meeting, they said the blog is already written and in review phase. as the content is somehow critical, there need to be several persons looking over it.

Only the pop-up in some apps annoys me. Most of the applications still do work but I have to close a dozen or two of pop-ups. Moreover, in some of those apps I have to keep out of choosing OK by clicking somewhere outside of the pop-up to do not crash the app. What a malicious piece of code. |
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
Finding apk or installing it is not a problem. The big huddle is google service on which more and more apps are relying (or google makes it like this).
This is where the android runtime in BB10 became less and less useful although there's hack or tweak to remove the google service dependency. I don't know how alien dalvik works and handles but I really do hope it won't cause too much inconvenience to use android app properly. I use iOS, Android, Window 10 mobile, BB10, Sailfish (for a short time) and Meego, but wired that I like the OS the most in the reserve order (Window 10 mobile is out of the pic). |

ok it was not critical: see the exact wording:
"08:32:58 <Jaymzz_> I'm pushing to get the post out ASAP, but since it's a rather sensitive matter, it needs many extra eyes to read it and approve it first" |

Everyone can view the logs, so they have to live with it. And I think that's exactly the reason why they have to approve the blog news before posting them. ;)

Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
Wonder if they really gon' post on the very last day of Q2 :)

Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
Finger is on the trigger already.. Xperia X order goes in day 0. And when the higher end model comes out it's gonna be upgrade time.
|
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
At this time you should have your finger on F5 :D
I don't know if I would buy a X as my Aqua Fish is pretty new and performing well for me. I'm curious which models come next. I've got a Xperia Z in the drawer... Let's see and hope that the release of SFOS for the X will be a big success for Jolla. |
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
Hi, long-time lurker, first-time poster.
I've been an avid Nokia/Jolla fan for quite a number of years. I had the N700, the N800, the N810, the N900, and the Jolla phone. I've still got the N900 and the Jolla phone, but I don't use them much because I live in the U.S. now and the Jolla phone only works 2G (and the N900 is really showing it's age in the software department). If it makes anyone feel better, I bought an Xperia X and I'm really hoping that Jolla comes out with some good news this week. I've got the new phone sitting on my desk, ready to flash. I suppose if it doesn't happen, I can just sell it... |

Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
Still no release, BUT some nice and also important facts in this post.
In short: CBeta members will get the image within the next weeks. It seems like they want to provide the image bundled with an easy to use installer, which is very nice in my opinion. |
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
And this option probably will be just exec'ing 'fastboot flash X' commands in recovery mode.
|
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
Annoying, the link to the Xperia X in the article doesn't work - they used this link:
https://www.sonymobile.com/global-en...specifications but they should have used this: https://www.sonymobile.com/global-en...specifications At least they must have something ready to release to beta testers... I guess how long we have left to wait will depend on how many bugs they find! |
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
So... no Xperia X Compact? :(
|
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
Told you it would be an epic wait :D
My next bet: Next step will be that they changing target device to get more time ;) like they did with screens for tablet. The wait is on. |
Re: Sailfish OS (officially) on Sony Xperia devices
As they wrote they want to hold the number of community devices low. Devices with similar chipsets to the X have a higher chance to get a port of SFOS than others. If the X compact is very similar (I don't know), chances are high. That's what I got from the post.
