Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
Is there Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing.
I am new to RSS - first time to use them. Seems like RSS reader that comes with 770 can't do this. What apps can? I have read all the posts, but can't find an answer. Thank you if you know of one, or if you can tell me it doesn't exist. Or if I have to learn Google reader. I read this link: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ht=rss+offline but I couldn't believe that what the OP was saying was correct - about how its supposed to work offline. thank you for any help. |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
Install Claws-Mail and the RSSyl plugin. Then set the RSSyl directory to sync to your IT.
(Honestly, I've never tried this, but it should work.) :p -T. |

Does "Snyc to your IT" means install Claws-mail on my PC and download RSS and them "sync" them over to my IT? I hope to do this all on my IT if possible. |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
This is all done on your IT and works fairly well.. (I use it myself, can't find any better solution)

Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
1. Download and install the free Jaiku client for the N800/N770 called Mauku.
2. Create a Jaiku account. 3. Add all your RSS feeds into Jaiku. Now all your feeds will be auto-updated within Mauku. Whoops....that's more for updating online...nevermind. |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
I read RSS "offline" on the subway all the time... It's the main reason why I used my 770 and kept the IT long enough to want to upgrade to the N800.
If you do a RSS Reader refresh, you will cache all of the newest items (and sadly only the newest -- grr) locally, but *only * the RSS items. If you read a lot of full-content feeds (like Engadget) this works pretty well. But yes, it won't fetch the linked page so it's not great for reading the NYTimes feeds or the CNN feeds where the RSS descriptions are uber-short. You'll want to switch to offline mode while you're reading them since on the 770 it won't cache images, only text, and that connection dialog will open again and again. On the N800 they did add an image cache which makes it that much better, but if you sync a lot of feeds (like me) you'll see that connection dialog soon enough. Really, this is what I do 80% of the time on my tablet. Reading RSS on the subway = AOK. |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
I usually do that with the built-in RSS reader in my Nokia N800. Before leaving I just press the refresh button in the RSS reader and that's all. The only missing thing is you don't get any image from the feeds, because are loaded on demand.
Another solution is take all your RSS feeds and generate a HTML output and be loaded in the Nokia before leaving... |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
I'm still thinkin' the Claws method may be the best one (and, you can have it save everything to the MMC of your choice.

Can you recommend any good RSS feeds? Any one else can recommend? I am less into news. Tech or anything interesting would be good. I will try engadget. ty. {I will try Claws-mail too.) |

But yes, the Claws solution is probably better because of the item-removal issue -- the reader doesn't have any control for storing items (vs. merely caching them) so an item may only stick around for one or two refreshes before the app dumps them. Which is why I refresh manually. I don't need to hold onto 60+ news items per feed when on the go, so the builtin reader has been fine for me, but YMMV. |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
It's worth checking out the Daily Pluck for this. It's a python script that downloads rss feeds using Plucker, then packs them into a palm database format suitable for use with FBReader.
You can run it on the IT directly, or on a desktop machine and copy the .pdb file over to the Nokia (either way, you'll need to install Python on the machine it runs on). It may take a bit of work setting up, and you'll need some way to run the script (either with xterm or some way to run it from the home screen or menus). |

. The Claws Plug-in page you linked to states that "libcurl" and "libxml2" are required. And then there are links........ Click on those links and someone please explain how to install these items. |

If you install the Claws repository, it will contain the main Claws-Mail app, as well as (currently) five plugins. After you install the plugin(s) of choice, you must load them into Claws via the Configuration>Plugins menu. -T. |

My tunnel vision strikes again. I've had Claws for some time now (and the HTML plug-in.) Application Manager said I also had RSSyl (but nothing was showing in Claws itself.) Recently I've become dis-satisfied with the stock N800 RSS reader and tonight I was searching for an alternative. I figured I was missing an ingredient for RSSyl, so started down that road. . Thank you very much for the prompt reply....you've saved my weekend! |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
RSS Reader is working great. I am still looking for good RSS feeds that have more content in the actual feed.
Can people recommend any RSS that they like? PLEASE Please Please! Quote:
I spent 3 hours looking for blogs and feeds yesterday in google and top RSS sites and couldn’t really find any good ones (other than the top 10). Also, my solution to the offline issue: I clicked on the stories I was interested in in the RSS feeds, so they opened in Opera. I did this in the hotspot on the way to the train, and the went into offline mode and read them on the train. Not sure how this will work, but if opera doesn’t crash, I can read the web pages offline. Last question: Any way to make the font bigger in RSS (or globally on my 770)? Its too small to read for me. Plus I hate that tiny scroll bar – hard to use with a finger. But bigger fonts? ty |

I tried loading the RSSyl plugin (which appears to be installed on my system in app manager) but going through Configure / Plugin just shows me the gtkhtml2_viewer.so - the path on top of the window is /usr/lib/claws-mail/plugins. I browsed that folder and it appears that it really contains only that file (ls -a shows just that, other than "." and "..") Oh, and just before I ask it as soon as I successfully installed the plugin... Is there any way to export my Google reader (or through readermini.com) feeds and import them into claws mail? Does it support OPML import as google reader does? |

Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
Hi there,
I know this thread was almost done, but: I didn't like my Claws mail experience for rss-feeds. And I found a great app that allows you to download the complete HTML-pages of rss-feeds for offline browsing/reading. It's called Feedelity and is available via Tahitibob's Website Just install the *.deb, add a feed, update, press "download" and got to "offline" in Feedelity. Now, when clicking "view" for a news item, the web-browser launches with Feedelity's cached version of the Website instead of the "live" URL. Have fun! Franko30 |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
I'll try it out, even if this means I have to set up all of my rss feeds again. Is there any setting to allow the channels to be saved on one of the cards? And, furthermore, will this work under OS2008?
|
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
Yes, it does work under OS2008 and you can cache the articles on the memory cards as this is exactly what I do.

Now if there was just a way to sycn Google Reader and the default RSS app it would be great. I wish someone could just make a Google Reader app for the N810, is that possible? |

Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
Trying to solve the import-to claws-RSSyl-from-Google Reader problem for myself, I found this advice from Darla Mack:
"It wa simple enough process to exporrt my feeds from GReader. The file saves with a .xml extension. Rename it to .opml to import it into Claws. Each feed is seperated by its own folder. If like me, many of my feeds are grouped into general catagories. I recomment loading the previouslymentioned HTML plugin, it makes reading RSS (essecntially mini-web pages) much easier. RSSyL could use some ability to easily manage your Feeds, cluding rearranging feeds into categories, integration into Claws menu structure. To use most of the plugins features requires a right click (tap and hold) with the stylus. As with much software in the opensource world documentaion is somewhat lacking. Don't be afaid to play around a bit to get your RSS your way." http://www.darlamack.com/darlamack/2...g-into-rs.html This worked very well for me - even put the feeds into folder trees based on the folder structure they had in Google Reader. |
Re: Any RSS Reader App. that allows Offline Browsing?
The Feedelity link didn't work for me, and it seems it was spelt incorrectly. Dug it up though, the link to the deb is here: http://david.hautbois.free.fr/joomla...iles&Itemid=67
