Thanks for the heads up regarding the webcam incomptibility issue with Skype! Have you tried Google Talk? Does it work with anyone using Google Talk only, or will it work with Yahoo Messenger or MSN friends too? Am thinking of getting the N800 on ebay or Amazon - used - as I can't justify the cost of full price. Overall, is it worth buying at reduced cost, or is it another flawed gizmo? Sounds like Nokia is weak on service! Thanks much! Peter

Hi Peter:

I wouldn't turn anyone away from the N800 just because of the webcam issue. I definetly am glad I bought it! Even though it won't do video chat with anything on the PC, which includes Yahoo, MSN, or anything else that I've found.

Still though, you can still use it to "chat" via text or of course, Skype audio--and that's great, phenomenal, in fact, that this little device can do so much. Yeah, I love mine--but--if they put a webcam on it, then it annoys me that I can't do video too!

By the way, I believe there is some chat software (I think it's called GAIM or Pidgin) that is supposed to allow you to connect to almost any other chat software out there. I could be wrong about this, but check around, perhaps on maemo, org, for it and I think you'll like it. Again, no video, but almost universal text-chat.

Isn't the question really 'why doesn't the Google Talk PC client have video?'

I did a quick scan for Jabber video chat, but no joy.

Either way, that would seem to be the solution. Easier to get a Jabber plug-in done, than a CPU upgrade on the N800.

Note that Skype is soooo good because of their proprietary compression techniques. This requires CPU horsepower, and that's why we don't have it on the N800. To tell you the truth, I'd settle for a crap Skype video client.
