uninstalled and installed again, same problem.
installed conboy (unstable) and ok so far.

am wondering if the last application update messed...

knots2 was working fine

i upgrade to vlc 1.1 using korn's ppa

knots2 using n900 profile stopped working
tried the new_vlc script as per wiki, didn't work

so downgraded to...

i can unison on n900 terminal; i usually unison from my pc or laptop, works for me.
