Hi Sorry for the late reply, I've finally had time to try my N900 with an Orange sim and it worked fine, my Voda N900 is unlocked to all networks, so no need for that unlock code that they sent me.

Yes, the phone is booting in boot mode, it's the update that's the problem, it starts by showing me the package details, the stops at looking for a suitable usb device

I did about that when I got this device from Vodafone, I asked and they sent me the unlock code along with the instructions on how to unlock it, so I'm assuming that this one is locked to Vodafone.
