Sure pretty basic but it would have been nice to explain how you got this result.

It seems you are using "idea" as appication launcher but how did you get rid off the left side bar ?

I came across the same problem with same messages (apt-get update in "xterm")

By disabling (after several trials) the FBreader repository everything went back to normal

I've test both "sylpheed" and "claws" and I'm not so impressed by "claws"

While having the accounts settings on both I'm not able to send mail with "claws"
(smtp errors) the accounts need...
