  Someone has worked out how to provide a direct mp4 for a given show on iplayer: http://www.dracos.co.uk/play/bbc-iplayer-mp4/?p=b009gf52
  but I've been unable to play the stream with mplayer or media...

  Cool, this works great! Would it be possible to implement a pause button so it stays on a widget until unpaused? Also it would be useful to be able to swap between several channels.

  Yes, it does work under OS2008 and you can cache the articles on the memory cards as this is exactly what I do.
