On Mameo 5 you can disable both, and at least change the Nokia hands and it is not that difficult

Maybe it is a good idea to have different themes on different devices..
It seems im not the only one who opted for a lighter background on n900.
I have black backgrounds (nearly black lockscreen, etc ) just to save some rare n900 ram and speedup boottime ..
Not nice but fast.
