See the numerous times it's been asked on maemo-developers. The semi-official reason is that Nokia Legal always get very twitchy about releasing any battery or charging information.

Is it possible to get an accurate measure of the amount of power still left in the nokia 770's battery?
Something like a % value, or "time left"...
