I would like to hear from users who have set up a way to do this.

This includes the hardware and software to get the job done.

thx

No software required if you use a Nokia 2mm => USB adapter. Keep in mind that the one I got on ebay was very poor quality, I have to jiggle/rotate the connector for it to charge and it charges much slower than the official charger.

I don't recommend the retractable one (it's the cheapest one on ebay last I checked cause the retract part broke on mine and yeah). I am about to order this one: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.23127

and also I hope this one works out
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.32580

cause it would simplify my charging situation greatly.

Of course if you want to use the microusb port built into the device, I don't recommend it. You'll need to open it up and do some soldering, plus if you do that, then you probably will no longer be able to use a USB host cable.

I'd also like to add, it's great for in the car cause it keeps the device on and slightly charges but like I said it's not a great "over-night" solution. I also have a Lenmar power port mini
and I can charge my N810 when I'm walking q= (which I actually did today)

well i also noticed that on my car charger : car12v-usb5v-nokiaPlug

maybe it's not caused by the cable but the supply

I didn't mean to imply official versus knock-off.

I meant the pin looks a little bit different. Kind of like how the usb host cable found on ebay has this shroud which makes the plug not fit in the port all the way (therefore "loose") and some mini usb cables don't fit well in some ports due to recessing the port.

But maybe I'm wrong in regards what is wrong with the cable I have. I do wish it was a stronger/tighter-fit connector (like a 3.5mm audio adapter for instance) than how loose the nokia 2mm plug is.

I think someone said they rigged their microusb port to charge with a bit of solder, maybe they have some developments/insight in regards to that.

That one (sku.23127) has worked fine for me (~3 months so far).

if you are willing to risk it, I cut the tip off my charger and spliced the wires together to a usb cable. Recently the 99 cent store had a shipment of nokia car chargers, so it was an easy decision for me. Works like a charm.
