If you are installing it from app manager, when you have the window open, before you press install, is there a tab that says problems? If there is, it might tell you what is missing. Or you can try from xterm as root:

apt-get install tear *I think it's just tear*
It may try and if it is missing something or needs something, it might tell you.

the problem i am having is that it says i need to be root, i used to have a program that gained root by typing sudo gainroot, but after i reflashed, i couldn't find the applications, and many don't install as easy as before, can you give me the program that lets me gain root by typing sudo gainroot? thanks
