Today I got my N900 and I am starting to set up things. ;-)

Is there any good FAQ about setting up a ad-hoc WLAN with
a WLAN capable laptop ("Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN") ?
(I set up networks under Linux but I am a complete WLAN newbie ;-) )

Google did not help very much...

Or is it better to buy some equipment like the
Trendnet TEW-654TR
http://www.trendnet.com/products/pro...-654TR&cat=166
and forget about ad-hoc?

Ad hoc wouldn't make you happy on a mobile device. It's an extreme battery drainer as ad hoc doesn't support power saving.
For easy setup on Linux side you could try with Ubuntu and the graphical network manager.
