If the N900 is locked to a specific network, would flashing it remove that lock?

I'm thinking about buying an N900 which is quite cheap, but it uses a different network than the one my simcard is with.

Where are you? As far as I know, n900 was only locked to vodafone uk. Everything else is unlocked.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
