Has anyone had any joy (or even tried) installing webmin on their n800?

Why would you?!?

Well, my answer (if I could install it) would be: because I can. That's why I'm trying to find out. That and the fact that it is so very useful. I know I need Perl, but I'm not much of a Perl buff (not at all, in fact), so I don't know if I can satisfy the dependencies.

As it happens, I also have webmin installed on my x86 Ubuntu box, my Apple iBook running OS X, my Linksys NSLU2 running Debian Etch, and I want it on my n800.

BTW, I did a hacky build of iptraf for the n800 yesterday if anyone is interested. Binaries only, no deb.

I use to run webmin in some server for the Windows admins that way it would be easier for them... other than that I see it useless....

Sorry, this topic falls of the front page so fast I didn't realised you'd replied again. I'm off out in a minute, but if you PM me with your email address, I'll mail something to you later. I had to hack out some FDDI stuff to get it to build. It can be a little funny with the virtual keyboard - it's better with a BT keyboard, but there are some workrounds for using the virtual one.

Regarding iptraf, I've posted (for a while) the modified source and n800 binaries at:

When you decompress it, the binaries (rvnamed and iptraf) are in the folder called src. Just put them in your path somewhere (i.e. /usr/local/bin or whatever) and chmod. The Setup (build) script likes to create stuff as shown below. On my n800,I just created the folders that it seemed to want and copied the binaries into my path. The hack involved not including linux/if_fddi.h on line 22 of othptab.c, not including linux/if_fddi.h on line 38 and commenting out lines 197-210 of packet.c and not including net/if.h on line 27 of tcptable.c.

It seems OK for a quick hack. Best with a BT keyboard. I use a shell script which launches iptraf after a 5 second delay, giving me time to close the virtual keyboard if needed. Sorry if it's a bit rough and ready. Not fully tested - hack away. YMMV

You don't have to install make (unless you want to rebuild it in scratchbox). As I said, untar, and take the binaries from the src folder and make them executable. The tarball is a snapshot of the post-build source tree. The modified source is provided to satisfy the conditions of the GPL.

The output I posted is to give some clues about the directory structure that is created when it's installed. I think its best to recreate the folder structure.

Hope that makes it clearer.

I'm going to have a stab at it, never know when it might come in handy! It'll have to be the minimal one though, c'est la vie, ne c'est pas?
